Title: She's Painted!
Post by: DyRally-Z1986 on September 03, 2014, 10:09:16 AM
Here are some pictures my painter sent me the other night when he finished up. I think he knocked it out of the park.

Looks nice. Is that a hard tape line on the firewall blackout? If so it should be softened. Many photos here for reference.

Thanks! I'm beyond pleased with the final outcome. It's pretty cool building a yellow-Z just like my Dad rebuilt his with my Uncle 25 years ago. I'll be able to remember this one a lot better and enjoy the memories. As for the firewall paint line...I haven't seen the car in person. I'm heading up to the shop this weekend to see her. Work seems to get in the way a little too much.

It does look nice. No offense but I think you should have them redo the firewall blackout. It appears they use 3M Soft Sdge Foam Masking Tape. It would not have looked like that from the factory. I'd make sure the dash top has a suede finish also. If you are going all out on a correct resto it makes sense to pay attention to factory correct details. If you are not, then the details don't matter.

Great looking job, firewall or not. What a bumble bee - or yellow jacket, if you prefer. Really pops -

The car looks very nice. One comment, on the top of the cowl I have not seen two separate blackout areas like the painter has done. The two should be connected so there is no yellow gap between the two.

It's actually not a hard line up close. I'm going to leave the firewall alone. I will have to look at the cowl panel when its set in place. If you can see yellow separation I will fix it.

Jon,
Was the cowl blackout unique for the Z-28 ?

Stripes buried under the clear?

Clear coat brand is PPG Global 894. You can feel the stripes.

Just Feel them or can you catch your finger nail on the edge of the stripe? (The finger nail test is the test judges use when scoring for points)
***If the stripes and color were cleared together then you probably can't catch your finger nail on the stripe edge,  which will lead to a point deduction.
Current accepted practice for original cars is to single stage(I use Dupont Chroma One) the stripes (over the clear) which is as close to assembly line as most people are going after.

What brand of yellow did you use & how much did it take to paint the car ?
Looks great by the way. My dull yellow has nothing on that

Can you still polish the stripes if they are on top of the body color? Just worried about painting them like that and getting a dust spot.

Yes, I usually shoot 2-3 coats, (White stripes 3, 2 for black) typically leave the tape in place or re-mask the edges and cut any imperfections/rough polish with the tape there so I won't accidentally take the edge down too far. With 3 coats after un-taping the taped edges feel "tall" which I slightly cut with 2000.
As an aside... I often tape edges and creased crowns/breaklines when polishing vehicles.

Depends on paint company, coverage, knowledge of product and spraying technique. 1.5 - 2 coats of Concept black or white for stripes and I'm done. If you over reduce it a tad and keep the mil thickness down it leaves a minimal edge. I pull my tape as soon as the paint is out of dust. All you want is coverage, not thickness. Once the stripes are tickled and buffed the edge is still there but not like that of a non buffed buried stripe.

Yes it was mike. So you didn't look down through the cowl screen and see body color.
P.S. I didn't get any pics from you.
