Title: Newbie looking for advice
Post by: BSMIT59 on August 20, 2014, 12:46:26 AM
Ok I'm an old guy newbie and don't mind the old part. I recently joined this group after buying a 67 "barn find". This car was in the barn since 77 and still has all original parts. Unfortunately 37 years in a barn was not good for it. The barn finally collapsed and when they were pulling all the wood out to burn they dragged the car back into the light of day. The coons, rats and spiders were evicted and they took a picture and put it on craigslist , where I found it. I bought it sight unseen, drove down immediately and paid for it. After seeing it in person , I was scared a little, but what the heck, I got to start somewhere. I got it home the next day and started my photo documentation of everything. After 3 evenings, I got enough crap out of it that I could put it into the garage. I have started disassembling and found a lot more rust than I anticipated, but I still think that in the long run it will be a good #'s matching restoration. While looking for body parts, I thought I came across a donor car, went and looked at it found that it was a 67 ss350. Needless to say I bought it. Now I have  2 BIG project cars. I am trying to backtrack the history of both cars to document the first mostly, but the bigger issue is the engine transmission for the SS350. Any direction in the right path to doing this from you guys would be greatly appreciated. Both cars are central Ohio cars from the Norwood plant.

1967 Camaro Sport Coupe.      327/275 hp  power glide  factory 12 bolt posi  with radius rod  2 hole bracket (no rod)
# 124377N245837.

1967 Camaro SS350.      No engine /transmission  AC car. Right side speedo for Muncie. 12 bolt posi  wadi us rod   1 hole bracket (no rod)
#  124377N160087.

Thanks for any and all help.

 Barry

Welcome Barry.  It's a bit hard to give much advice at this point.  Can you post a few pics?

I can't find any information on either car.

I guess at this point my advice would be to keep the car you really want to build and sell the other to help fund the restoration of the other.

What are the axle ratios codes on the two cars?

The SS 350 has a december date with a QL code 1967 w/ 3.31 posi

The sport coupe I haven't got the housing cleaned up enough to read yet but it has a positraction plastic tag on the fluid fill plug

Nice.

I am pretty sure that 3.31 was the standard ratio with SS350 in 1967. QL is the code for 3.31 open. If it has a posi in the housing, then it was added.

CamaroSas-Congrats and welcome! Seems all new members (including myself when new to site) have a learnining curve to overcome in posting pics. It will just be a matter of time, short time I hope, as we all are interested and curious to see BSMIT59's finds.

Thx for the welcome, I am a 44 year old guy from the Netherlands Europe, Yup the country from which a plane was shot down above ukraine by those red communist. Anyway i have been in the car hobby since i could drive a car. I started of with alfa romeo's and have onwed quite a few. some 33 a 164 and latest a 2,5 v6 156. I had eibach pro street s suspension kit installed and it drove like a bat from hell, i could corner that car like it was nothing. But after more and more rust i got disappointed with the these cars. I decided to ga a diverend route , and i always liked the first gen, camaro's so here i am. I don't own a camaro yet but will first have to sell of the alfa romeo parts en save up some more, before i can go look for a suitable project car. SO if somebody  needs some info on alfa's i am the guy. that's all for now Hope to find some new friends in here.

Cheers,

Sas

Welcome Barry,

Well I can tell you first hand (myself VERY new here) you came to the right place.  These guys/gals here know their $#!%  if I can say that.  And if they don't, they're the first to help get you an answer.

Now that being said.. I think you need to step back and figure exactly what direction you want to go in.  Restoring one, specially if it's original and mostly all there and documenting is a HUGE task let alone having 2.  Some guys have taken as little as a couple years up to as many as 10 years to just restore one.  Of course that's all going to depend on your time and how big your money tree outback is.   I'm about to take on a restore project myself and set a goal of 5 years, if sooner than great.

If your only wanting to restore your numbers 67 coupe (IMO is your best bet) then don't waste time researching the SS350 as it's a donor anyway.  As bcmiller said,  put your time, energy and funds into the one you think will make you the happiest and use the other for any needed parts and to help fund your other build.  IMO getting wrapped up and Doc's on 2 can be OVER WHELMING !

Best of luck and welcome aboard   :)

I know i have plenty of time left , i hope in my life to build a camaro. Currently i am figuring out what would be the best way to go for me. I like custom work , but also a stock original car si nice too. But i am more a custom guy. I like badass cars i see on you tube or other places. And i have to figure out in to what extend i can customize my car , for it being still a classic car, thats becuase of the taxes i will have to pay operating it on the road. I am currently looking at a car but have not decided yet if i wanna buy it. It is a good base car for a nice custom build. but wil need a ton of parts, maybe i should look for one that has more parts left on it. including engine. On the other hand if i buy a gutted out , car i can make it in to what ever i want it to be.

Cheers,

Sas

The 4P car with the stripes would be the car that I would look at seriously. If not a 67 Z car than it would make for an awesome clone of one, IMO.
Now the black car in the second pic looks like a good start as well. Question is that the same gold car behind the black one in the second pic?

Yes Bullitt it is the same gold car. As Bentley stated , he posted these for me, but it looks like I sent them not in order. The 4P car is the black one and the gold one is the SC with all original parts. Its complete but needs total resto. It is a 327/275 PG car. I bought the black one to be a donor but realized it was an SS350 car and decided to put on the street more as an old guy's hot rod with a period correct 350 4 speed. I hope to put it back pretty close to "original" this year. It s Granada Gold w/ black vinyl top. The other car is also Gold so final result will be a his and hers fairly similar to each other.

Post some more details about the 4P car when you have time.

What is the rear axle code?

The 4P car is a roller that I bought with no engine/trans. I bought a period correct  matching #'s engine transmission from one of the guys on here. N127127 to use unless someone on here posts and needs it to put it in its original car. The rear end code is QL 12 21G.
