Title: My 69 RS - Part of the Barrett-Jackson Auction Intro From Hot August Nights Reno
Post by: rich69rs on August 14, 2014, 03:05:22 AM
A little late posting this due to being out of town for the last 10 days on business, but to make a long story short, during the introduction to the Barrett-Jackson Auction that was part of Hot August Nights in Reno on Friday, 1 August, of all the cars that they could have used, my '69 RS was part of the opening sequence.

They (FOX Sports 1) began from inside the auction hall showing a couple of the cars that would come up on the block, then went across the street to the Atlantis Hotel Resort Casino which is one of the venues for Hot August Nights (over 6500 registered classic rides - by far the largest car event that I know of in North America - lasts for 10 days).  I had reserved VIP parking at the Atlantis venue and had gone across the street to the convention with my son-in-law to watch the auction.  All the time not knowing that across the street, my ride was on national tv.

I didn't realize my car had been on until the later that weekend.  I had recorded the auction on the DVR and when I played it back - guess what I saw!

The FOX Sports 1 commentator is April Rose and she spent quite probably 30 seconds or so with my car before moving on to another ride.  Picture below isn't the best - hard to take a good photo off of the tv, but anyway you get the idea.

Now when you say the pictures not the best are you referring to your car or April Rose? :)...
I was there and actually saw both your car and April Rose. Took the time to check both out. I was going up the escalator while April was coming down. Im not sure all the body panels were original but man what a sweet ride...Thats actually very cool that you made it on the broadcast. Maybe I'll see you next year we had a great time this year and have already made plans to go back. Check out the 5 Z28's that were all together over at Victoria Square.

Richard, apparently, B-J knows quality when they see it and I am sure it was not a fluke that your car was chosen. Congrats!

Victorian Square in Sparks is a great venue.....and that is a beuatiful collections of Z's....especially the two Hugger Orang ones.

Another highlight for me this year was being able to do the evening cruises without worry about the engine overheating.  When I had the engine rebuilt in my RS, I had the shop perform some minor performance tweaking to the base 327 which put an additional heat load on my cooling system.  I've never overheated, but on a couple of occasions in past years it ran hotter in stop and go traffic then what I wanted it to.  To try and improve the situation, over the last 4 years, I've added an electric fan inside the fan shroud on the backside of the radiator that is both thermostaically and manually controlled (unless you are looking for it, yoou don't even know that it is there), switched from the fixed 4 blade mechanical fan to a clutch driven 7 blade fan, and added the seal between the upper core support and the top of the radiator.  My goal was to be able to take the 20-30 minutes of stop and go driving that you'll get into if you participate in the Hot August Nights cruises either through downtown Reno or through Victorian Square in Sparks without the temp gauge going past 1/2.  This year I did both the downtown Reno and Victorian Square cruises multiple times and the temp gage never went any higher than one tick past 1/2.  Checking with the IR thermometer, that was about 215-220F.

Definitely need to hook up next year.  2015 registration materials will be in the mail to everyone early in Sept from what I understand.
