Title: Cowl Tag Codes Sep 68 vs Sep 69
Post by: mgw76 on July 08, 2014, 04:42:51 PM
I'm looking at a car that is supposed to be a '69  RS/Z-28 and the owner supplied a photo of the cowl tag.  Paint color and interior line up with the tag but no X33/X77 code.

From what I've found on this site, if the car was produced prior to mid-December '68 there isn't an X code on the Norwood built Camaros.  According to the date code on the cowl tag the car is supposed to be a September, 3rd week build.  Since the '69 was a long model year run (July '68 to Nov '69) is there any difference in the date code for a car built in Sep '68 and a car built in Sep '69?

Thanks

No. In your example, 3rd week of September (09C), it would be the same on a 1968 tag and 69,70 etc....So, a Sept.68 and Sept.69 would both show 09C on the TT. Also, remember, the tag size changed between those two example dates. Make sure the VIN corresponds with the time frame of the TT.

X codes did not show up until Dec? 1968 for the 69 model year. My former 69 rs/ss vert had no X code but with a n509386 vin it was a sept 68 build PRE X code. Sept 69 builds would have a vin in the high 600,000 range or low 700,000 range I believe without looking it up.

x codes appeared around 12B of 68. My 12A 55xxxx has no X code.

Thanks!

I'll keep this in mind when I get to see the car.

You can check behind the rear seat for markings, ie x7,x4,x1,3 they will be in yellow crayon. good luck.

They will be in yellow paint pen or grease pen UNDER the glue used to attach the package tray vinyl to the metal structure of the seat support.  Very important that they be under the glue, because I have seen people add them to cars but the markings were on top of the glue residue.  People will do anything for a buck these days.

Funny, the question was about Trim Tag date code-NOT X codes or markings on seat backs!

I'm no expert by any means, but a few other things to also look for in helping to determine if it's a true RS would be the stainless trim on the front parking lights and the back up lights were in the lower valance panel and not the tails lights.  Unless, someone went through a lot to make into a RS by changing these out.
