Title: NOS Rear shock absorber P1132
Post by: jack on July 05, 2014, 02:09:25 AM
HI all.

I just purchased 2 NOS rear shock absorbers P1132 for my multileaf suspension 1969 Camaro SS. On the shock I received the part number is 3198132  P1132.  However in my Master Parts Catalogue it states 3192968 for my car (for a P1132 shock absorber).  Has the product number changed with time? I was told GM would change the parts number over time.  Date code is 9E 68.

Is this shock for my car?

Service replacement parts are often more generic than OE to cover a broader range of application.

For '69 model year production 2 rear shock absorber codes have been seen on cars built with 12 bolt axles; TN for automatics [3192832] UN for manual transmissions [3192851]. We have seen one anomaly for each code. If GMPD serviced those numbers it wasn't for long; they are not listed in the October '69 P & A manual. The generic service 12 bolt rear shock at that time appears to be 3182033.

Were can we get rear spiral dated shock absorbers (oil filled) closest to the originals (UN for manual transmissions [3192851])?

Parts cars, ebay, swap meets. Very tough to find. Replacement shocks were heavily marketed in the '70s so many OE shocks were quickly replaced. Sometimes worn out but I believe they can be rebuilt. Corvette guys have been doing this for decades. You would not believe what a bud paid for a used set of '65 Corvette F41s dated to his car.

The shocks you bought were only sold through Delco Dealers. I am not sure what parts book you have but you would need a Delco parts manual for reference. I have one dated July, 1973.

The shocks you bought P1132 are correct for '68 or '69 Camaro with multi-leaf. They are not the Heavy Duty shocks.

The shocks for Camaro's that start with part number P1 are all standard shocks and are painted a goldish color. The shocks that start with P2 are the Heavy Duty shocks and they are painted a greenish color.

The Delco HD replacement rear shocks for '68 or '69 with multi-leaf is part number P2105.

Its was my mistake to order P1132 because these are standard. I know my convertible SS was delivered with a sport suspension (what does this mean?). I should have ordered P2105  HD.

I hesitate to put Delco Pleasurizer shocks (P2105 or P1123) on my car because these don't have the spiral look as the originals. I really want the car the most original possible. The original color was gray.

Your thoughts?

Camaro SS equipment did include different chassis components, mostly heavier-duty springs. I believe '69 was the 1st year spring selection in production was based on option content/weight. There was an optional F41 Special-Purpose suspension; Chevy was vague as to what that included. However service replacement shock listings mention 'Spec Perf Susp' so that may have been the difference.

Would be nice to have a CBC for an F41 car.
