Title: Z28 drive belt
Post by: wisemanz28 on June 14, 2014, 02:55:28 AM
Need a new fan belt for my 1969 Z28, the last one came from Rick's Camaro and did not last. Can you guys recommend where I could find one.

The first ever reproduction belt I got from Ricks was toast the first 6500 RPM's I hit. Sounded like a long tail rat got stuck under the hood. I saw a post somewhere later on asking this too and found someone saying use a cogged belt, if that is what they are called. Has the blocks on the outside of the belt. I think I just measured what I had and found a gates or something at the NAPA store. Here is a pic. Been on since 2000 or 4500 miles. Has never twisted off yet. Would be interested in hearing what others use if there is a different belt though.

Thats what happened to mine, I was looking for an original look though but if no one makes a good belt I might have to use a cogged one also.

I and many others purchase our fan belts from Quanta, the same outfit that makes gas tanks in Rising Sun, MD.

Funny how they say if you are not happy with their belt for any reason, just return it unused within 30 days for a full refund. How the hell would I know if I was happy with it or not... UNLESS I install (USE) it. Holding it in my hand for a few minutes, then say I think I wanna send this back?? Funny... Danny

Mine was a "Quanta" belt I bought from Ricks before it became what it is now, still have the belt and the cardboard label stashed away somewhere. After the first throw off you could actually watch the belt roll around on the alternator pulley at idle. Never was right after that. I don't know how they are now but it seemed to me the hard backing was too soft.

I have a friend working on a 69Z and some reason it has non deep groove pulley, at least on the crank and if I remember right, had newer alternator.  He was asking me, if the Z motor takes a different belt for the deep groove pulleys or it just sits down deeper?  Quanta lists the z belt as a different part number than the small block non ac belt.
We were wonder if the Z belt is wider?

Not sure Bill, but have the person call Quanta and ask them for the difference and report back.
Assume there is a good reason like the belt having more depth/width.

All of the Z/28s had smog. 4 speed ss350s also. Automatic ss350 doesn't have smog. I wonder if that's the difference?....Joe

I compared the quanta small block no ac manual transmission to the z.  Figured if there was a difference it must be for deep pulleys.  Will do some more checking
