Title: Length of J-bolt for spare in trunk
Post by: ZLP955 on June 14, 2014, 02:23:23 AM
Could someone with a 69 Z please confirm the finish, correct overall length, and thread length, of the original factory J-bolt hook that is used to hold down the 15" spare in the trunk?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Hmmmm...6 inches long. I'll have to look at mine tomorrow but mine may be a little longer...I think....but who knows after 40 years and not being original owner.

check your hold down nut too Gary, see if it was plated like mine. the more i look at the pic of my J hook it looks like maybe it was phosphate plated maybe ?

Eldon. I think mine may be zinc plated but will have to look to make sure. I can check my survivor 69 Impala too, probably no difference with them, but who knows. Maybe Bentley or GaryW still have originals. Lloyd should have his original too.

rs, how much of the hook threads stick out when the nut is down tight ? now im wondering if mine is right or not. oh well, i will find out when i bolt a spare down.

Interesting, the one pictured did look quite short. Assuming you use the jack base, and then the special curved wingnut, to secure the spare, wonder if that'd run out of length? I didn't mention bolt length for space saver spare because I thought that was only an option with 14" wheels, is that correct? I know the coupes and convertibles used different bolts due to the position of the spare in the trunk, maybe the 'vert has the shorter one?

Don't know how much thread sticks up when the spare is installed, but just the threaded section is 5&1/4".
Wing nuts are not all the same BTW.  Correct wing nut is 4&1/2" wide total and there is a small protruding section/collar where it goes through the jack base.

I will post a picture later, as well as wing nut differences.
I have owned this 69 RSZ28 since 1974, 42,000 mile survivor , Canadian Docs.

My 69 Impala survivor has a 6" j bolt with a perfect wing nut, no rust, nice and shiny and my Z has a set up just like rszmjt's. I think the difference between the 2 vehicles is the angle of the  trunk floor where the wheel and tire lays and the placement of the welded loop. There is a lot of space under the rim in the Camaro and in the Impala the rim sits pretty flat. The longer one definitely wouldn't work for the Impala.

Here is mine from the 04B '67 coup for a 14" tire. Looks like Eldon's posted in reply #2.
Not sure if it was used in '69 or not but it can answer where Eldon's was used.
