Title: John Bishop
Post by: oldtransamdriver on June 08, 2014, 07:09:45 PM
John Bishop passed June 5 at age 87.  John was a longtime executive director of SCCA and helped oversee the advent of SCCA pro racing - USRRC,Can-Am, and TRANS-AM.

In 69 he and his wife Peggy, along with Bill France, co-founded IMSA.  Rick Stevens and I were able to do 3 Camel GT races in 72 and John kept a Touring Over Category open
for the 305 ci racers for a few years.

John and Peggy were very racer friendly and even years later when I would show up at an event and see them at registration they would always have a cordial greeting for me.

At the 73 PoCono Camel Gt I broke our Camaro transmission in practise, and could not locate a replacement and had to load up and go home.

Imagine, when to our surprise, a full entry refund cheque arrived in the mail a few weeks later.

Rest in Peace.

Thanks, Robert. I'm very sorry to hear of the loss of John Bishop. SCCA certainly felt a loss when he left to form IMSA. His impact on motorsports in North America was very significant. My condolences go out to his family.
