Title: Red Line tyre measurements 68 SS RPO-PW8
Post by: Ue on June 07, 2014, 02:00:15 AM
Hi All,
To make my 68 SS/RS look more like it did in its day, I'm looking at getting aftermarket redline / redwall stripes (RPO PW8) applied on my tyres (tires) and while there are plenty of brochures showing them, I cannot find anywhere with measurements.

Can anyone tell me...
1. how wide the redline stripe is?
2. how far from the rim does it start?
If this is already posted in another thread, I couldn't find it but please post a link.
Thanks in advance.

BTW,

1. 7/16
2. inch and 7/16
At least on this OLD TIRE. (http://www.camaros.org/forum/index.php?topic=3173.0)
It's been laying around for decades. Sorry, not sure what it came off of, but it is a 14 Uniroyal Tiger Paw redline....

I agree with 3/8 in., at least that's what they advertise them as.  As for the measurement from the Bead to the Red stripe, I think that varies with the size of tire.  Maybe even brand of tire.

Coker Tire makes accurate repro's except for the thread design which had to conform to newer standards.
I have an original Wide Oval tire and also repros Firestone Super Sport Wide Ovals (D70x14) I can take pics of.

Might not help but I checked our 67 Corvette Coker red-line tires and the red-wall is also 3/8" wide.

Thanks Mike S & 68camaroz28.
Mike S - Pics of the tire would be great. Can you also measure the distance from rim to redline please? Lakeholme says Inch & 7/16' so a second opinion could confirm that for me.

Here are pictures of an original Firestone Super Sport D70x14 Wide Oval still on its original DG rim in my 67 4B LOS L35. The height from the tread to redline was taken at the base of the tread stamping in the mold so as not to get conflicting numbers due to tread wear.
The other picture is of a reproduction tire set I bought from Coker Tire in 1987 when they first became available.
You can see the differences of where the red line is placed. The original is above the black center line and the reproduction is below the black center line. Aside from the thread design that is different (the Coker was supposed to be DOT compliant per 1980's)
the lettering is the same between the two.
I do not know if Coker placed the red line in a different position after I bought these but looking at their web page its location looks approximately the same as the one I bought from them in the '80's.

Thanks for the photos & measurements Mike S. There's are blokes out here who paint the red line on the current tyre so at least I can get a "factory look" without having to but new tyres.
