After reading John's post on the 67 Z road test ,it reminded me about the mag I've had for years.

Wish they would have taken a larger pic of the engine compartment.

Really don't believe it was a priority back then , performance data #1. There were some details that did come up ( and matched what was done on mine ) so I'm pleased. Also matches 67 article/pics. Bit of time was put into "imperfection" in small areas and Bob nailed it. Lots of work on my plate this summer, no way I'll be able to start re-assembly until fall/winter. Still 3 years ahead of my initial time set to "dig into it"
Interesting on their choice of rear gear, I believe in an article I read, Mr Stahl stated optimum would be 4:30 ,street/strip. A steeper 1st would be a must with 3:73's.A high 14/ low 15 sec Z just doesn't flow good off the tongue.
I always did, and still have a preference for 67's....love vent windows.
Any 69 Z road test articles out there ? Complete the trifecta. (spelling ?)

I think that 'slightly less than 15 sec at 100 mph is pretty accurate for a *strictly stock* off the showroom floor Z28, no headers, no slicks, no supertune... but I recall a '67 Z28 in 1971/72 that ran 11.61 in the 'stock class' with headers, 7" slicks, and gears..
I'm sure I have several articles testing Z28's in my collection, but I'd have to go dig thru thousands of mags.. :)
as well as tests of Baldwin Motion Camaros, etc.. from that time frame..

A 4.10 M20 combo even show room stock would have been quite a bit quicker...
Heads up race from a dead stop with two good drivers you would think the 3.73 M21 was missing a plug wire.

Thought about it after the post but I agree :D Sometimes I forget they had to keep the tests apples to apples---as It rolled off the line. Exhaust manifolds and small exhaust would choke any engine built to breathe. Jerry M's runs high 12's with headers (through full exhaust) ,4:88's and E 70's. My Dad ran 13.05's with the similar set up--poor traction. L60's did not help, and I don't know if they sprayed the tracks back then(in the 70's) When it did hook up,(small slicks) violent wheel hop without traction aid. All ET killers.

The magazines didn't always follow that rule.. :) it was usually pretty obvious when they didn't.. :)

That was a fun read. Some of the usual inaccuracies, but 20 mpg?

I remember getting as much as 20mpg with my '69 Z back in the '70s but maybe I was doing the math wrong. :P

I was thinking the test drive was all down hill. The best I remember getting getting was 15-ish. Maybe I did the math wrong. Then again, gas was cheap and I didn't care until the oil embargo years.

Thought maybe they did not do the kilometer to mile conversion ,which would put it at around 12mpg (off the top of my head). Interesting article . Two different mind sets concerning autos between here and across the pond back then. Interesting the Z was so well received. Love them articles Jon.

Interesting how things do not change. The Brit's opinion of American Cars is still usually one of contempt! Lol!!
