Title: Original GOODYEAR E70-15 Wide Tread GT, Date Code?
Post by: Bryan302 on May 27, 2014, 04:34:47 AM
I would like to put an original WTGT back on my original YH spare wheel for show purposes only!  Please describe how to locate and decode the original date of a Wide Tread GT.  Please post a close up photo, if possible.  Is the date something the judges would count off for, if it were the wrong date for the car?  Is a repop for a spare accepted just as much as an original?

Thanks,
Bryan

What was the DOT code, Jano?   Your images weren't sufficient resolution to read it.....

Wont be able to get to my laptop until tomorrow....however seems like we had this conservation last year around this time. I sent all 5 tires pics to Ed B (among other #s) for the data base. Really for this purpose.

Perhaps if he gets a chance he can post them ,I have no problem with that. If not, I'll re size them and get them posted tomorrow. If you do a little searching on this site Bryan, there is posts how to decipher ,going to see if I can't dig that up--steve.

Thanks Steve, Those charts help out a lot.  Would you please make the photo of the tire a little larger.  It would help me learn if I could compare the tire to the chart, and other tires.  Looks as if there will be a definite need for a pocket chart for the swap meets.  Thank you for your time and effort!

Anyone have a similar decoding reference for Firestone?

The more I look at the chart, the more confused it becomes. I have a G-Y Polyglass F70-14. The numbers go like this: MDLD  Y4A173 . I do believe it was an aftermarket replacement tire and not an OEM tire because it has "blem" stamped in the sidewall.  I also have an old BFG Tiger Paw and a couple of "stones" Super Sports I would like IDed as well if there is info.

Pre 70 OE's should be in the above 7 digit format.

Some good readings concerning these era tires on the Shelby forum ,search around a bit. I have not read in depth on the subject, just enough to decipher year and month for my tires, which I already knew were original to the car.

This being somewhat rare, I will in the near future post better images of all 5.

Per P.O.P and NCRS production date on my Z  was May 1, as I began documenting all my date codes I have been somewhat surprised how close to production the parts match eg; tires April, Engine 4/23   Rear end 4/24  Trans 3/21  etc...

At one time they built E250's and Thunderbirds in my home town (literally the buildings were sold for scrap price a few years ago ,sad) As a kid I would see rail cars and semi's of parts being delivered. Huge rows of stacked parts on pallets were in and outside the plant ( south side) at the end (north side) a constant flow of cars would cross over a bridge and be parked awaiting shipment near the lake. Really have to appreciate on a grand scale how production remained in sync....without cell phones and the internet. ( They also built ships ,cranes, electrical parts. Manufactured Steel and seamless pipe) Around 500 manufacturing jobs remain in a city of 68,000 now. Seamless pipe.

What was the FIRST date for required DOT tire marking (when all manufacturers were required to mark per the DOT's mandate)??  Wasn't that sometime in the '60's??   Before that DOT required time, the only 'dated' marking on the tires would have been by manufacturer and all of them would be different....?

My brother works for Firestone corp and he hasn't been able to get an answer on the 60's era tire codes

The DOT tire marking requirement was effective for the beginning of the 1968 model year, but there was no standard format for the information and the manufacturers each used their own proprietary coding, so the markings weren't understandable or relevant. The law was amended shortly thereafter and a standard format for the TIN (Tire Identification Number) was mandated, effective mid-May, 1971. John Kelsey of Kelsey Tire can decode the TIN on Goodyear tires made between 1968 and 1971, but as far as I know, nobody can decode the TIN from any other tire brands from that period.

Thanks JohnZ...  :)
That answers the question I had...  so basically before the 1972, the only period correct tires that *might* have a relevant (deterministic) tire date code would be the Good Years....

Hi Steve,

Here is the code off my WTGT tire.  It is JU05861.  JU for 69; 05 May?.  I'm sorta puzzled because of all numbers past JU.  I looked pretty close and they all appeared to be numbers.  Would is help or make it right if the 8 was a B.

Thanks,
Bryan

Feb,1969   plant GAD....according to chart. Check on the Mustang forums ( Shelby) Lots of info(links) on some threads there. Dig deep enough and you'll  find what you are looking for.Started with a guy wanting to verify the spare he had in the trunk. Unless pure coincidence, the numbers on my tires (5) coincide with the chart and translate to the proper time frame ( build date). Sorry can't be more help Bryan ,one of many numbers, and not a lot about it. Did my reading last year around this time, found what I was looking for and moved on. Shame about the tires, they were severely abused(hole shots) very early in the history of the car and used solely for winter storage. Most likely were off the car by 69. Side walls show no dry rot. In 90 I wanted to put the Ralleys back on and had new tires mounted, decided to keep them.

Thanks Jano,

Well, I finally caught on.  The first set of letters were throwing me off at first.  Thanks for your time and effort.  I'm going to make myself a pocket chart for swap meets.
Thanks again,
Bryan
