Title: 1969 Z28 Cowl
Post by: DyRally-Z1986 on May 13, 2014, 12:52:33 AM
Does anyone have some good pictures of what the cowl area paint looks like on a car that came with black stripes? My Z28 is Daytona yellow. I have read that Norwood did it different than LA. My car is a Norwood car. Thanks for the help.

There is nothing there about what the cowl area looks like with black stripes. I'm kind of curious myself since I have about 3 repaints on my Cortez Silver with black stripes car. I'm sure mine is no longer correct.

My camera just recently quit working. I will see If I can get my Nephew to take some pictures tomorrow of mine and post them. My car has the original hugger orange paint with black stripes on the cowl hood and cowl area.

I searched through the pictures as well and there are some decent shots of how the factory brought the black fire wall pant up to meet the body color on the cowl. I am in need of what a properly done cowl area (where the windshield wipers are located) looks like when it is painted as the factory did. People say Van Nuys did it like this and Norwood did it like this but someone somewhere must of repainted their cowl area back to factory specs and possibly have pictures of what it's supposed to look like when replicated from what the factory did...

I think the OP is asking about the top of the cowl area underneath the cowl panel. The white seems to be what is discussed the most, nothing has been discussed about how the black was applied on a black striped car. Also, my question to add is if the wiper transmission was installed before or after paint. My car has been repainted 3 times from what I can tell but the wiper trans still has no paint on it.

I'm wondering if a black striped car went thru the same process as the white striped cars. So far the white stripe method is all anyone shows.

Yours is a black stripe car, GaryC?   Do you have a question about it?  Mine is also a black stripe car

Original poster does, I'm merely curious. White stripes are referenced mostly but never black.

another member here has 2 black striped Z's and the cowl tops are both stripe black over the body color, one is a 03E and the other is 05C both NORWOOD.

Here is a before paint of the 03E Olympic Gold car
Note the gold paint on the edge, the firewall black stops short of the gold and then the mist on the cowl top from where the black sprayed in the wiper well

Yes the orginal poster would love to see the top of the cowl of a Daytona yellow Z preferabally. The top of the cowl should be yellow and if you follow the picture in the aim manual it shows fine lines where the black out was painted over too the yellow on the cowl. From what I've read they did not use a template so it's fogged?

Here are more pics of the black car with white stripes showing the mist from the blow in.

Excellent pictures. Thanks a lot for posting.  I've passed them onto my painter. Would you guys do a tight line where the black should be fogged in or make it as the pictures depict?

I would do it similar to the cars produced around the date of your car, and the plant your car was produced at.

X2
Early norwood cars were much sloppier and some had a good deal of mist down the firewalls, the black car is a 4/24 production date and is much neater than earlier,

The black stripe cars did not have as much of a visual problem with overspray showing as the white striped cars.
Regarding LA I have little experience in their stripes.

So a black stripe car would have the same technique a white stripe car had, at least for a Norwood car anyway.

Okay, i guess I'll have him 'fog' the black over the yellow. My car is a January-3rd week Z/28.

Did you take any before pictures of the firewall?
I wouldn't be surprised if there were some yellow mist with the black over it on the top of the vertical and roll over like in the picture of the Gold/black stripe Z I posted earlier.

If you study this, realize there are 2 different black paints here, the firewall black that has a fine gold mist over the top 1-2" of the firewall, by fine I mean a 5% coverage max. Then You have CODE 10 GLOSS Black stripe color leading to the edge on the cowl top. Looking at it knowing there are 3 different paints and where they are should help you and your painter understand what should be where. Who's on first?

if you look very close you can see the fine gold mist it looks almost like dust.

Yours probably had some yellow where the gold is here, blacks shot the same.

Thanks Kurt. This Daytona yellow Z was built the same day as my burnished brown one. Amazing how sloppy the factory was. Twenty years ago, If you paid someone 50k to restore your car, and got it back looking like that you would be pissed! Now, not so much!!
