Title: Front Bumper Guards
Post by: jdv69z on April 24, 2014, 07:05:47 PM
Are the front bumper guards one of those items that were actually quite rare on production Camaros in 69? It looks like only 12000 or so were sold in 69 as a separate option. Were they a subset of another option, like the rear ones would be a subset of F41? Seems like a lot of Camaros for sale have these. I was wondering if they are one of those items that weren't there originally, but are added later?

Rear ones were mandatory on Z28's so theres probably another 20302 of them out there beyond what is reported under RPO V32.  I don't think the Front ones were part of any other option package, nor were they required when you ordered the rear ones.

My Z11 had both sets on it originally, but niether are required options on the Z10 or Z11's.

My car, as well, has (had) them (front guards). I look at a lot of 69's and check out what options they have. Like these front guards in topic, I am surprised how many cars appear to have rear defrost, when it was scarce, also, according to production figures. I wonder now how many cars had several dealer installed options that ,of course, are not recorded? That may explain why seemingly scarce options are more prolific than production figures indicate. This is not considering the recent increase in adding options to restos as more and more repro parts become available.

I agree with what you said about the restos , it seems like all of them these days will throw on the cowl hood, and add the console gauges, "Z/28 stripes" etc. You see less and less of the poverty caps, flat hoods, and other stripe packages. I do see some guys going back to original, including the original paint color for there car, hopefully more of this trend continues.

You mention the defroster, which I don't believe is being reproduced.   Some items like the defroster show up in much higher percentages in restored cars than originally, because some owners restoring their cars want to make it 'more unique' than it was originally.   The sources for these parts come from two primary sources (unless they've been reproduced):  1)  from scrapped cars which get their rare parts removed for resale, and 2) some items - like the defroster - may have been used on more models than just the Camaro, so the parts get repurposed for the Camaro...  :)
