Title: First Gen FINNED rear drums???
Post by: 69Z28-RS on March 28, 2014, 06:05:46 PM
I've been reading here that the first gen camaros never used Finned Drums on the rear brakes, although several vendors supposedly make 'factory correct' parts for these..  ie.  INLINE tube ..

A bit over 20 yrs ago, I was visiting my inlaws in southern MS, and saw an ad in the newspaper for 'Complete factory disk brake setup for 69 Camaro SS'.   I gave them a call, went and visited, and purchased those parts.  I was primarily interested in the front disk setup, for potential use on other chevys I owned, but I got it all and brought it home.. it went into the back of my garage, *almost* never to be seen again. :)

This past week, as I was rummaging thru the garage hunting for Nomad parts that have been hiding back there for around the same amount of time, I came across the brake parts and drug them out (still in the plastic milk crates that I brought them home in). :)   All of these parts still look very good; the disk rotors are clean/smooth, the rear drums are smoooth also and none of the parts had rusted in that time.   Interestingly, the rear drums are finned, and are much 'heavier duty looking' than the non-finned drums on my Z28.  The seller supposedly removed all these parts (backing plates and all) from his '69 Camaro SS.

If these drums didn't come from a Camaro, WHAT did they come from?  These are GM drums with a GM pn (3987446)..  see photos.  Even if not 'factory correct', these drums would seem to be a nice upgrade for an early Camaro..?

I believe those were used on early 70s Nova, probably other applications.  He may have taken them off his car, but they are not factory correct for a first gen.

Here's a couple things they could have come on outside of being bought a/m Gary. 70-72 Chevelle, 74 Nova, 70-71 Monte Carlo. Even my late August SS still had non-finned drums. Not to say they couldn't have snuck some in on even later Camaros...
