Title: Original Starters - 67 L6, 68 SS350, and 69 SS350 autos
Post by: KurtS on March 28, 2014, 02:52:25 AM
I'm working on the starter applications and have most of the starter usages figured out except for:
67 L6 - auto and manual:
I only have what the literature says, no vehicle confirmation for either transmission.

1968 SS350:
Literature says one part #, but data from one vehicle conflicts that. I've looked high and low for other 68 SS350's with their original starters to no avail!

Early 1969 SS350 auto (before December 68):
Early SS350 auto cars had a cranking issue (there is a TSB on it) and apparently the starter was changed to a different part #. I know that after December, SS350 TH350's used a 1108420. Looking for early (pre Dec 68) L48 auto cars with original starters OR if you can tell me if the flywheel is 153 tooth or 168 tooth.

For any cars in these 3 groups, I'd like the VIN (can be emailed to me off-line), build date, and starter part number and date.

Here's where the starter is stamped.
Starter on the left is a 153 tooth starter with straight mounting bolts and the right one is a 168 tooth with staggered mounting holes.

Thanks!
Kurt

My 1969 SS/RS 350 (L48) is a Turbo-350 automatic car built 11D (68) VIN puts it around December 6.  153 tooth flywheel and 1108420 starter.  Starter was probably replaced under warranty???  Here it is after I rebuilt it.

Brian,
Thanks! That really helps with the 68 SS starters.

Bob,
What's the date on that starter? Look like 8L7? If so, that's probably original.

The date shows it as a late 71 (72 model year) starter. So it is a replacement. Sorry. :(

And what do you think of these frankenstein parts? This is what's on the car now.

Is there anything I can look at instead to help this topic?

I'll delete my posts since they aren't valid for the research.

Thanks - Andy

The 8365 is a L6 starter, used for a number of years, IIRC.

No worries! Thanks!

If you took this info out of a book, that is not what KurtS is looking for. The info needs to be gained by looking at original cars and their build dates.

Kurt Mark Bulaw has 2 69 SS 350 autos I know one is an early LA car, (because it's original paint and it has the long D90 stripe.)
