Title: 26 year resto
Post by: 68ashgoldRS/SS on March 27, 2014, 09:50:58 PM
Hey all, just wanted to post a few pics of my car.  Down to the wire, but managed to get it completed enough to get into the Autorama in Utah.  Ended up with a 2nd place finish in my class (68-72 restored)... a few little things to take care of if I show it again...   Thanks for looking! Ed

congratulations on completing the car and getting it to the show! A very nice build, I am surprised you only have a couple items, getting something that quickly to the show, I have seen guys that could only push their car around, since it wasn't complete enough to run.  :D

Have to throw this one in... this was taken 26 years ago when I completed most of the restoration on a back patio of a house I was renting while in the military.  My son (pictured) now has 4 kids of his own...  Man... seems like yesterday!

YUP !

Car looks great ,gets me pumped on getting mine home. Preaching to the choir, but were you amazed how much nicer the fresh Ash Gold looked ! I've been undecided for years on color and finally settled on keeping it GG. Been joking after all this , car's going to just look the same. Wrong I am. As beautiful as your car looks in the pics ,bet it doesn't do it justice.  We took a panel out for some sunlight to hit it and the color just pops.

Yep... you would not believe the comments I got about the color...  Really hard to believe that most people don't remember that color being on a camaro... according to the CRG color estimates, 9.5 % of the '68 cars were born with it. Only red and blue where higher... Was cool that everyone really liked it!  What goes around, comes around I guess!  Would love to see some pics when you get a chance!

Should be home late spring--I was in no hurry transporting it in this nasty weather. I'll get some nice trailer shots ! Sort of a side shop project for my buddy...so when he gets to it I honestly said I'm fine with it ,to him after 40 hour weeks of collision work ,he's really loving doing weekends on  his passion. It's ready for the booth but waiting for the weather to break.

Color ,I'd say around 24 years ago I was at a Super Chevy meet running the car. Guy came out of the stands to the pits telling me he was in the middle of doing a Camaro and loved the color and where I got it from. Told him from the factory and gave him the code...also said I really didn't like it. He chuckled ,disagreed and thanked me.

I've only recently seen one this color in person. Sold at an estate sale original, well minus 396 , VGC (damn I should have went and bought it !!) cheap.

The years make them look a little light olive drab IMO ,even back in 76. But fresh , very nice indeed. Wonderful job.

Man can I understand the 26 year thing as we have a similar situation and should be finished this year. Ours been apart since 1979!
Great looking car and congratulations. :)

Chick, some may call it gloating ,I call it sharing. Love to see some pics on the other bowties in you collection. Pretty sure everybody feels the same. I enjoy looking at others cars here ,in any stage. Really nice seeing his Ash Gold 68 on display.

Thanks all!  Really appreciate the comments.  Means a ton coming from guys who love Camaros and know them inside out. The process of getting the car to this point was long, sometimes frustrating, but always enjoyable as I look back at it.  The forum is/was a huge a huge part of getting me motivated to finally complete it in a manner which respected the car.  The help, advice, expertise, and camaraderie you offered was/is invaluable.  I'm a rookie, but love cars, and any solid help I can offer anyone on the forum I will try to offer. Thanks again!  Ed

Wonderful!!
By far my favorite color combo on a 68. Everything looks great, good for you!
I get the same comments about the color and also find it strange because it was so popular back then.
