Title: Is this tag real or fake?
Post by: BULLITT65 on March 13, 2014, 09:37:24 AM
Hey guys saw this listing on ebay with this tag
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Chevrolet-Camaro-Z-28-1969-chevroet-camaro-z-28-rotisserie-restoration-/261421926273?forcerrptr=true&hash=item3cddf60781&item=261421926273&pt=US_Cars_Trucks

Its been off the car and from that angle it looks fake.  Need a straight on pic for me to know 100%

It is a nice looking car for sure. But I must be snooty or just bored.  With all of the attention given to such things as assembly chalk marks and paint marks added under the hood I think I see some issues. Please comment on these: I am doubting that the hounds tooth interior has not been replaced, the steering wheel grain looks incorrect, incorrect Hurst shift lever, incorrect exhaust, zip ties on the heater hoses, no spare and a black grille? with the surround not painted to match body color and the grille emblem placed incorrectly?

Let me know if I am wrong but I'd be willing to bet that the tag is also a FAKE

Wrong headrests...straight instead of curved...too late a car for straight. Tag is fake IMO. Wrong Master cylinder and I could go on and on. :-X

James I was unaware that there were 2 different head rests, when did they switch them?

Azure good eye with what you picked up, should this car have a short spoiler as well? ( if any at all)

Also looks like the hood was added on, just guessing since the wiring isn't hooked up to it.

I don't think the wood grain was that dark on the steering wheel and the dash was it? How about the fan shroud, maybe 68? Wasn't there a difference between the 68 and 69's?

http://www.camaros.org/headrest.shtml#1969 Here you go Bullitt65. Late November of 68. Car does not have proportioning valve under master. And distribution valve is in wrong location. I bet booster is wrong too. Like I said earlier, a lot of details are wrong and I am not a Z owner. I know my BB's better My Blue car has straight headrests, other 2 curved. Funny how a trained eye sees so much. Guess I could add missing hood side bumpers, air cleaner stud wrong. Horns wrong as is color of hood latch/hinges looks like early 2 piece kick panels.Bullitt, ask owner for VIN, bet it is pre-X code? Want me to keep looking? Love these "Correct" 100% rotiserrie resto mods on eBay. Don't get me started on the others on that site.

Bob Harris ( south of Buffalo ) BUT I don't see mention of his name in that jumbled print description ???

I was surprised to see the woodgrain dash on an X77 car, without Style Trim. Always though that was a no-no.

Valve covers could have used a trip to Jerry's to remove the polish. Bet they're drippers - OTC part numbers, too.

TT is possibly fake - definitely been struck hard to seat the rivets. Maybe removed for restoration ?

Regards,
Steve

Tag shows it as a X33, probably right about the valve covers, if that carb stud gets any longer its going to go through the hood.

It may be "genuine", but it's far from "correct" - LOTS of missing/wrong parts and processes. :-(

My first Z in the 70's was manual steering and so is my current Z, but my current Z had a mix of 67 and 68 Camaro parts on it when I bought it in 2000 until I corrected that with 69 parts. a few months later. I was thinking about going back to manual but decided against it due to my age and strength.

There's nothing like parallel parking  a 69 Z with 60's on the front and no power steering. Didn't have to worry about the girl friend wanting to drive it. A real mans car.

You're absolutely right... :)   but they do 'throttle steer' pretty well...  :)

Hot302 your absolutely right about being hard to steer! That was why I sold a beautiful new 68 Chevelle SS to buy one with PS. Popeye could not steer that thing.lol Then my next car was a HO 69 Z without PS, but with the small block and skinnies on the front it was ok.

I call it "arm strong steering". Power is the way to go.... ;)

I think power steering and A/C have something common. In the 70,s we had neither so did not think about it. I never had either until I got married and her car had both. We drove hers on the honeymoon and left my 67 corvette coupe at home. Hey and talk about no power, try to stop my 66 GTO with manual drum brakes. Takes planning plus a strong right leg.

I am with you on that Kelley, My first big block car, a 66 Chevelle SS-396 when I got it didn't stop at all, it had fairly low miles and I realized the drum brakes in the front were worn down to metal on metal and still had the original shoes. I had the drums turned and put new shoes on it first thing, got it all adjusted and bled the system for good measure, and thought "now its going to stop really good". ...
It barley made a difference, it didn't grind anymore, but trying to get all that front end weight to a complete stop was all leg baby.
It separates the men from the boys doesn't it.....Good times.

.................It separates the men from the boys doesn't it......
My old-school car friend (WW2 vet) would always say when thinking back to the old days...."yep....those were the days when men were men...and the sheep knew it"
