Title: Half a 69 camaro....
Post by: VINCE Z28 on March 02, 2014, 11:55:06 PM
Does anyone know the story on this picture, looks like a front and back of 69 camaro, found it on the web.

I think those are pieces made into furniture. Front end= desk, rear=couch? Educated guess as of now, based on other similar pics I have seen. (Back after a minute of searches)Further investigation confirms my initial thought...man I'm good! ;D ;)  http://tr.pinterest.com/pin/538743174145019630/

Is that a numbers matching desk?  ;D

I would have to restore that grill and grill surround, and then install the grill emblem to the proper location...

On the plus side they got the deck lid paint correct on the couch, surprising since most of the spoiler (non couch) cars I see have the stripes painted all the way to the lip.

They had to put the grille emblem there in order to clear the built-in WiFi router.   :D

Reminded me of the "double header" cutaway show car when I first saw the picture!

Wow...I nearly forgot about Shane. I spoke with him around the time I bought my Z in 2000. I had an extra pair of tail light lenses he wanted. Man, it took a long time for him to get them too. I remember him telling me something about that cutaway Camaro.

Tim, he's not in your neck of the woods is he?

Yes he is Gary - and still in the car business, although last time I caught up with him, he confessed to buying a couple of Mopars recently...... Yikes! He's moving over to the dark side.
Nice story about the double header, enjoyed hearing about it straight from the guy that discovered it.

He was great to talk to. Mopars are great cars, I wouldn't mind owning a few different models myself. They always seem to command some big money. They are rarer then hens teeth or chicken lips around my neck of the woods.

At the time I talked to Shane he was working on a right hand drive 69 Z28. I had a pic of it at one time but as computers go boom sometimes, it went to the electronic dimension in the sky.

Here it is, very nice, unrestored Hugger Orange car - converted to RHD when imported here as a new car, and still remains RHD. Kind of threw me when I first saw the car with the fender pinstripes as well as the Z stripes, but apparently they were added a very long time ago so he left them alone:

Very cool. Is that orange, if so it seems a bit dark. I really like the minilite style wheels, been looking for a set for my car.

Hard to tell does it have a mirror on the right side as well?

Yes, it's an original HO car (if you're into that - sorry Gary, couldn't resist :)) and yes, does have a right hand mirror. More on the story, with photos, here:

thats pretty wild. So they said they switch it (back) to a left hand drive? If it was originally delivered there it wouldn't be a factory right hand drive Camaro?

No, that Super Chevy article is 12+ years old, and the car remains RHD to this day (don't think he'll ever change it, as this car has a unique documented history). But as all Camaros were LHD from the factory, this one was converted locally upon importation when new; at the time, all cars here had to be RHD, so there was no other option but to pay for the conversion if you wanted a vehicle that wasn't already here, or wasn't made in factory RHD. It was like that to try and protect the domestic car manufacturing industry, like having huge taxes and tariffs on imported cars. Some conversions done back in the 60's and 70's were better than others, and I have seen some hack jobs over the years that I just wouldn't drive over safety concerns, but this car is not one of those.

That's a gorgeous car, and I too have always loved the minilite wheels.. :)
Re the fender stripes:  I think I recall seeing some original GM Z28 ads which showed the 'over wheel pinstripes'...
Was that, or was that not, an option?

The fender pinstripes were part of Z21, but the pinstripes were specifically excluded when Z21 was ordered on a Z/28.

John,  Would you have any idea if the 'exclusion' might be something that could be 'Deleted' via a customer order form (for a Z28 buyer who wanted the pinstripes)??

Yep...that's the car. Those wheels are sweet and would love a set for my Z. Those would look great with Cortez Silver.

As far as I know, there was no mechanism to let a car order override the programming of the Body Broadcast; when a Z/28 was ordered, it automatically defeated the broadcast code for pinstripes.

Thanks John.   I know you can *Delete* items which are normally included, but didn't know if you could *Include* items that are normally excluded based on the options selected.

Personally, I really like the over-wheelwell pinstripes..  :)   as it makes the car look like it's moving when its' sitting still.  Were those pinstripes a 'decal' (ie tape?), or painted on?

Painted on. Bueller paint stripers, IIRC.

Actually, no. The pinstripers are just a fixture that moves up/down as the car goes by and applies the stripes. I imagine the setup of the rollers was fun, but simple in action.

http://www.camaros.org/assemblyprocess.shtml#final
"pinstriping fixtures were applied and Z21/D96 pinstripes were painted with Buegler roller-striping guns, and D90 door stripe decals were applied."

Here's a photo of a similar pinstripe fixture in use in 1965 at the Pontiac home plant - it has suction cups to hold it in position, and the top rail is the guide for the tip of the Beugler roller-striper. Two different Beugler guns were used - one with a thin roller, and one with a thicker roller for the second stripe. The Pontiac fixture is being used in an off-line stall, but the Camaro pinstripe fixtures were on-line, suspended from overhead balancers, and moved with the car.

Go here for more detailed information on the Beugler striping tool:

I recall that with newer vehicles, the process is automated, hence the fixturing is different. I didn't realize it was done by hand in 69. Thanks for posting the pic!

Thanks JohnZ and Kurt, for the additional info...  :)
Reading the Beugler data makes me want to go myself a pinstriper, and pinstripe every car I have.. :)

Did the right hand drive Camaro come from the factory with the rear stripes too close together ?

Did the right hand drive Camaro come from the factory with the rear stripes too close together ?
It's an early-built car, from memory September of '68, and there is a thread on this forum somewhere that showed (with photos) a number of early cars had the same rear stripe layout as the previous years did, and also that the stripes stopped further back from the rear window trim than later cars did. I'll see if I can find that thread and post the URL.

I have some recollection of that discussion but I thought the issue discussed was the distance from the rear window that the stripes started.

Fender strips on my 69 Z10 "when it had original paint" were about an inch & a half  longer on the drivers side than the passenger side
