Title: Cars in action !
Post by: janobyte on February 28, 2014, 10:16:14 PM
Anybody have pictures (present or past) of their cars at the strip? Have to be more than just a handful here who enjoy/enjoyed "dragging it out" once in a while. Fun Runs ? Smell of burnt rubber mixed with race fuel?

Nice launch !

Camaro Racing Group ???  Sorta these car's heritage. Old Reliable, Grumpy's Toys, check out his interview when he makes a pass in his 67 (you tube) COPOs? Not to mention road racing. Summit Motorsports (Norwalk) is 20 minutes from here--Thompson a little over an hour. Can't help to be bias. Come on Gary, scent of that 110 octane fuel burning through uncorked headers probably would have you pulling gears ;D Longest winter ever up here--chompin at the bit for summer! Blow a little carbon out of that 10sec Anglia.

Whats that mean? I put that ZL-1 motor in it to race. If you went running, wouldn't you put running shoes on?

Oaklyss, do you remember what you turned with the 427?

Only made a couple runs, no traction at all of course, 8.24sec at 88.727 mph. On street tires, leaving black marks the whole 1/8 mile, and granny shifting my original M20. About equal to high 12's at 110 mph 1/4 mile, which is right in line with the track test from 1969 of a stock ZL-1 Camaro. Motor is bone stock ZL-1 with headers and full exhaust, 91 octane and dialed back timing. Stock suspension.

Not really pictures but here is a link to a few runs at the strip.
A few of us went to the Junior Drags National Finals and at the lunch break took the kids for runs down the track.
I dont know who had the most fun.

I have other vid if you wanna check em out.
Best run on a serious day was 12.35 at 111MPH on the 1/4 mile

Cheers

Looks like fun Wayne. While I am enjoying the weather out here in California during this winter, I have to wait until july when I go back to Indiana to drive my Camaro. When is it going to thaw out back there??

Hi Bullitt65, it just gone autmn here but the weather is still pretty warm and sunny.
It is raining on and off today though.
We done get extremes of weather here in Auckland, no snow.......ever in this city.
It will get pretty wet and cold in another couple of months...... a good time to do maintenance.

I gotcha, keep up the good work down there. The most I could relate is  I went to Australia a few years back, and I although I know it is not New Zeland, your neighbors were very nice and hospitable, I loved the weather. I imagine more of the same in NZ.  ;)

Funny all the Orange cars at the strip.  Hmmm...Orange is faster maybe?   ::)

Anyway, just had to post.  I've showed a couple of other guys here this, but thought it might be appreciated by others in this thread.
As a back story, I've been trying to track my car's history through prior owners and one thing that kept coming up was some prior drag racing history.  Anyway after talking to the latest guy, Steve Sweitzer (former drag racer) of Sweitzer's Performance (used to be a speed shop in Jersey Shore, PA), he told me that he remembered my car racing up at Tipton, and Altoona, PA. area.  Browsing historic vids of old drag strips I came across this video of Peterson Memorial dragway in Tipton.  Now at the 12 second mark I nearly spit my coffee through my nose.  There's a Hugger Orange Z/28, with black vinyl top, and incorrect black grill like I have.  At least from the 8mm movie footage, videoed, and then uploaded to Youtube...it looks that way.  Could it be my car?  I don't know.  I'd like to believe it is.  My car in 'Vintage' action as it were.  Pretty cool.  I've contacted the poster from Youtube but have yet to hear anything.  I'd like a better copy of the source obviously.

Here is is:

p.s.  Some early 'Jungle Jim' in there too.

....

Some use the abbreviation, H O, to be for Hugger Orange, but it's actually HO Orange for 'High Output Orange'...  :)
(That was a nice run your car made there at the strip back in the day...  :)

Mid 80's at Norwalk Raceway.... stone stock 327-275, orig 2.56 open rear, and a set of Lakewoods...  14.80's ?? was all I could tune out of the old guy...and believe me, that was humpin with the factory Glide ! I think I blew the rear either that day or very soon after....Spider gears and a badly tore up ring gear. I have a few teeth left as a souvenir.

Funny with the ladder bars and the bigger tires it looks like the car would turn a decent time. Although do you need traction bar (s) with a one legger? maybe just traction bar

You might have shaved off some time riding solo. ;)... Took me and my friends a couple passes early on to figure out 1 less passenger = less weight = faster passes.

cool, I also notice the period correct USA-1 plate on your machine

With the Mono-leaf rear, wheel hop was horrible. I could feel it in the steering column it was so bad...bars were a must. I later added multi leafs and 4.10's ect...

That was a fun day, test & tune at Nporwalk. Weight was something I was aware of. I stripped every useless part off that car. From the bumper guards & trim to the carpet and sound deadner, A/C stuff, no spare, clock, 8-track . I think the Caddy-Hack article in HR came out around then???  A pound lost is good. This was to be the baseline, but I changed my thinking and drifted more towards the resto side. Good choice! I took the weight reduction to the extreme after that on another car. I put a 440 Mopar into a gutted/hacked Chevy Monza.....Now that was fun!

pretty sure every 100#'s  shaved = .1

moving more mass = breaking more parts ! Wiped out a set of 4:88's (GM) at a Super Chevy (I think) meet at NRP early 90's.

Now run a 2300# Anglia with a "very done" 400 ( the block anyway did a lot of years in the Z, great engine) Build the car to cert. 8's, run low 10's and maintenance comes down to fluids and plugs.

I did race the 69 a few times but never got any pics of it.  It was a turd compared to this car.

Nothing wrong with a nice 4th gen. I miss my 93 Z28. It was a great driver and did pretty well at NE Dragway in the late 90s.

There have been many cars and thousands of passes over the years, mostly in NHRA Stock classes.  Here are two of my favorite rides.  The '68 F/SA  ran between 1980 and 2000 and the '94 C/SA has been here since about 2002.

Small world, I had one of those too! Very fast cars, I had the Vortech intercooled Supercharger package on mine to keep it California smog legal. No other mods 6 speed: 12.45 @117
Here it is at the Famous and now closed Carlsbad Raceway back in 2001:
