Title: How long have you owned your Camaro?
Post by: BULLITT65 on February 28, 2014, 06:06:14 PM
Ok fellas, James (ko-lec-tor) said he wanted to see a poll on how long we have owned each of our Camaros, so here is a new poll for all of us first Gen guys to participate in. If you have more than one car, vote based on the 1st Gen Camaro you have owned the longest.   ;)
If you have a good story about how long you have had it, or how long you looked, or how long you waited for the owner to sell it to you, post the story below.

Enjoy!!

Officially title transferred in 89 ,been wrenching ,washing and waxing since 76. Learned how to "no lift" shift in it at 14. The 302 was ok , well balanced machine ,the 406 was a parts killer. Actually only weak links were the M21 and GM ring and pinion. The pressure plate was a Centerforce (when they first came out). It went at the track and they mailed me another on exchange. Lakewood bellhousing covered everything up. Went auto and never looked back. Axles and drive shaft never twisted. This with foot braking and pulling the front wheels up about an inch off pavement. No drive line slop. Mind you I wasn't chasing points every weekend--just a few Wednesday night trophy class runs and any big Chevy events at Norwalk. I cannot confirm nor deny any ....street racing that may or may not have taken place back then.

I think 77, could have been 78 or 79. And the front fender wasn't reshot--Kodak instamatic 110 film. My Minolta captured some good pics in the 80's. Paint consistent.

My dad liked those big meats hanging out of the rear also, so did all his buddies- must be a generation thing (not me) L60-15's on Cragers stuck out back there 79-89. M series on your dad's back in the day? He hated the Ralley's ( silently still does) There was an "old lady" in the neighborhood (probably only in her late 40's at the time ! ) who had a gold 6 banger 68 I believe. The question does come up if I'm " putting it back together like an old ladie's car >:(  ? "    With a scowl. After all this it's really going to look just like the little shot to the left--with a hood. Front end will settle back down with the engine in it ,and after all these years I am partial to it's stance.

Z11-1994
L78- 1997
'68 Z - (1996) 2011

Sold my '70 Chevelle in 2011 to finance the '68 Z - miss the Chevelle, but pretty fond of the '68.

"Later" version of a '68. I do like the 302 emblems on Darrell's '68, though - always thought that was an understatement.

This is my second 69 Z,  I bought in 2000. I call it my unrestored car and not survivor because it has been repainted...several times...and has many missing pieces and some added pieces. Unfortunately, it will stay unrestored because I really don't have the means to put $100,000 in it.  :(

I got my '68 in May of 1983 and have owned it since. I got a '68 for graduation in 1975, totalled it in 1980, and just had to have another one. I've gone through a couple of paint jobs, a lot of engines and transmissions, then let it sit outside, which is the worst thing you can do. A few years ago I took it completely apart to do a frame-up and fix everything that was worn, broke or rusted. It's now completely restored except for the paint job, which will be done this spring. It's time to drive that sucker again. Long live the 1st-Gens.

I have actually owned my Camaro since Sept. of '91.  I voted on poll from that date.  I originally bought the car for my son for his 16 th. Birthday Nov. 16 - '86.  Attached is a pic. of the car as I got it from him some body work was done, most of it had to be redone.  The engine in it at that time (a built 350) was junk.  Most of you have seen the car in different stages, and my profile pic. is as it is today.  Many thanks to much info. and input from this forum.

agree. Quite a few years ago when I debated changing colors that combination was in mind . Finally when all the stars aligned and I  had somewhat of a chance to tear into it I've decided to keep the original color. Not my favorite ,but it isthe car. Seeing the work done so far, I think I am going to be pleased with the color in "fresh"

Maybe so, but it took Chevrolet a half a year to get it right, and when they couldn't sell enough Corvette Bronze cars they discontinued it before it could be perfected. Seems like that happened with British Racing Green, too. Hmm -

Maybe I ought to repaint the '68 Z Lemans Blue - then it would be 3 Lemans vs. 1 Corvette Bronze - you think ?

Man, that hurts just looking at it. Reminds me of a guy that had a 69 convertible here when I was stationed at Dover AFB. There is this one particular merge lane that is on the left where two main roads come into one and he tried to beat a tractor trailer into the bottle neck and the rear trailer wheel walked right up the left quarter from behind the wheel up on top of the quarter at the rear side window and right on the top edge of the driver door before he could move the car away. Now that was a mess. He said he was damn near into the passenger seat when he saw the wheel of the tractor face to face. Did a lot of damage. Never saw the car after that so I don't know if it was ever repaired.

Cook you basically saved that car from the junkyard man. One more stays on the road thanks to you! WTG . My friend had a 69 Cougar that got  t boned by a cement truck and looked like that on the outside, on the inside because it is unibody it flexed the body enough to yank the transmission tunnel into the number 7. We had no option but to cut it up, after we saved every vital piece.

35 years for me. Man,it sure doesn't seem that long! The previous owners wife ran it into the back of a pop truck. Bent a frame horn back at a 90 degree angle and ruined the front sheetmetal. They kept it for a while and then decided not to fix it. It was just a used car back then. I only wish that I'd got there before they sold the engine/trans. Everything on the lot that it was at was going to be crushed,so I guess that I at least saved it! It was several years later that I figured out what it was,but by that time it was too late to track down the parts that were sold. Here is a photo after I started working on it. I put it in storage for a long time while Life stuff took over. I'm now trying to gather stuff to restore it correctly.

Darrell,

Last time I saw this car, it was being driven on the square by the former owner. A ding or 2, but nothing this dramatic. Did she survive the impact ? If she did, she must have been as tough as the car -

Bullitt,
thanks but my father was the reason it was saved.  Without him and his reputation around this area the car would have sat in that concrete tomb until who knows when.  I was just the helper at that stage working off my debt for parts and paint.

Steve,
Yes is was still living when we got her (the car).  She had pulled out in front of someone and they t-boned her.  Hit so hard it broke the A pillar away fron the roof.  You can start to see the crack now after the hard years of driving by me with the 4 speed.   :o  This happened in 1978 or 9 and it saw the light of day in Nov of 1989.  Still have all the original wheels & centers.   Also had a Wilson Co Motors emblem on back tail panel.  As you can see it got a new GM quarter, a door off the Cortez 69 parts car and a new GM left front fender.  Still has the original interior minus the dash pad.  This will be the weekend fun car (drag racing) once I get to it.

I purchased my Z10 in 1999 from the original family.  The car was in the showroom of my local Chevy dealer in Pampa, TX in May of 1969.  It was purchased as a graduation present for a high school Sr, who took the car off to college.  He would come home occasionally and by 1972 I owned a 68 Z28 and we got to know each other because of the cars.  Me the high school Sr. and he the college Sr.   He was killed around 1973 when he dug a cave in a sandbank at a local lake and it collapsed killing him.

The car stayed in the family and I eventually bought the car from his sister with the condition I wouldn't flip it and I would finish it.  It's been 15 years and it's now part of my family.  Who knows, one day maybe my 1 year old grandson may have the keys in his pocket?

This is my X66 car that I've owned since April 1982. It was restored once. At that time it had spoilers, special hood & rally sport. It will return to the way it was originally during restoration. The car has it's born with drivetrain. Sold new in Tucson at Orielly's Chevrolet on July 29, 1970. Released from Norwood September

Is the white roof correct with the yellow car with black stripe??   Your car got out of Norwood production a couple of weeks ahead of mine.. :)

Great pics X66 not your typical color combo with the yellow houndstooth.

69Z28-RS.
Code is 76E which I like a lot. I like vinyl tops on 69s because of the color separation. The car has no paper work but I know it came with the following
396-325 hp
th400
p/s
pdb
a/c
tach & gauges
console
tilt
custom/deluxe yellow trim 714
special front bumper (still have all the jack parts)
custom belts
I added p/w, sports style trim & the rose wood
I don't know what wheels it left the factory with. I had a picture years ago that the original owner sent me that & it had 14x6 rally wheels which I knew was wrong. A guess is it had plain wheels & the dealer changed them to help sell the car. They had it almost a year.....Joe

The yellows & white cars were the only ones that kept the black stripes with a white top.

Kurt indicated for every 10 cars that were ordered with black, maybe one was ordered with white. I think I got that right. I'm happy it's white. It makes it so much different than others...Joe

I'm sure the white top *helps a lot* in Arizona's sun.. :)     That's a great car with it's options.
I like the halo vinyl tops also, although vinyl tops do introduce some additional problems as to 'upkeep' of the cars.
I love the yellow houndstooth interior; it has to be the most rare of the interior combos..   I almost bought a yellow/black with yb houndstooth Z28/RS at one time, right after I found my orange one in 1976..  Sure wish I'd bought it.. :)   $1900... :)

Here's some pictures of the 1968 Z/28. I purchased it in March of 1976 for 800.00. It has been restored twice. All sheet metal is original but engine & trans is not. Rearend is original 4.56. Car came with console, tach & gauges, spoilers, wood wheel & black houndstooth. I added the rest of the options years ago when you could find this stuff everywhere...cheap...Joe

Joe, What all did you add, option wise? Do you have a pic of what it looked like when you first got it? In its $800 form? Car looks outstanding now. Like the color.

I added Power windows, am/fm radio, headrest seats, tilt, front guards, sports style trim & power steering. I now find this interesting the 2 cars had the high end interiors but the base exteriors except the 69 has the special front bumper. I have some older pictures of the z/28 when it still had factory paint. I had a roll bar & 11.5x29.5 firestone drag 500s on it at that time. I'm trying to get the pictures to crop correctly so I can post them...Joe

Joe--I have 4:88's in the car now and the OE 4:10's on the shelf. Also have a set of never used Richmond 4:56's. Been mulling over going with the 4:56's. Overall pretty satisfied with that gear? Cruising?  Car has M21 with the 302.Beautiful car by the way.

I like the 4.56s for street use. Can't go out on the freeway too well. I don't know if you would notice a difference between your 4.88 or 4.56. I owned the car for 10 years thinking it had 4.10s also thinking that was the factory ratio. It found out it had 4.56s when I changed axle bearings. They're factory & match the code on the housing...Joe

Punching in the numbers(racer's math) is a fair difference in engine speed at 55 ,however not commuting with it.we'll see ,minor decision. thanks. Always heard 4:56's were a "happy medium"

Awesome pic, the Cragers, a vintage build. Did you opt for the hood with the hood pins?

I did a lot of mods when I was 16.  The 327 was wore out so we built a 396.  I put the hood on, wheels, and traction bars.   Also the car has a 4 speed, Weber aluminum flywheel, and scattersheild.     Had WAY to  much fun in the car if you get my drift.    And I still have it along with several others.

Did you ever make it to the track, to see what your set up ran?
Title: Re: How long have you owned your Camaro?
Post by: ds1 on March 09, 2014, 11:08:45 PM
Yes I had it to the track.    I worked at our local drag strip for 16 years.   When I did all the work I was 17.   My dad pulled a fast one on me and made the carb linkage and made it a little on the long side.   He had to answer to my mother.   I built it and if I broke it, I had to fix it so I really was scared to brake it.   I never got to know what it really ran.  It ran 15.70's  It just never seemed to rev all that quick.    20 years later I asked him and he just laughed.  I had ported and polished the oval port heads and did my own 3 angle valve job.   But never ran it to its potential.   I ended up putting a 350 in That ran 14.70 with 3.36 gears and 3,400 pounds.  I took it off the road in 1995.  We built the best we could at the time, but there just were not many parts for the cars then, dad got $20 a week allowance so he knew how to stretch a buck.    Up 1985 the car had 12 owners and  was used very hard.   The top bows were broke and it had a 68 front end on it.  It has been a big part of my life and has to be restored the I can make it the next time it breathes again.    I have had 10 Camaros since, but there is only ONE first and I still have mine.   It is an early car built in 66 and was a 327/ 2bbl, 3 speed on the tree originally, factory Bolero red, black interior.

Good story, I like the idea your dad had. I may have to make some of those "mystery mods" to my kids cars when they are ready to roll.

Cool story ds1;   Your car is very similar to mine  11A(66) LOS built,  327/2 bbl., Powerglide on the tree originally, Bolero Red with standard Black interior.  Difference is it was my sons first car, plan is it will go back to him eventually.  When I'm done playing.  LOL!

Howdy all. Just found this site and thread and registered, and had to reply for my 1st post. I am the original owner of a 69 coupe, built in Nov. '68 at the Norwood plant. Although it's just a base model, it's unrestored - with the exception of being re-painted 15 years ago with it's original color which is Lemans Blue lacquer. Just rolled over 86,036 miles. Low option car - main options are: PS, A/C, 327/210, Powerslide ;). Only gasket ever broke on the 327 is the water pump. Still has the original lug nuts, wheels, dog dish hub caps, interior, sheet metal, Protec-A-Plate, documents, copy of window sticker, etc. No broadcast sheet was found when taken apart for paint. Went down to bare metal for paint - front clip off, glass & ALL external trim off, and entire interior removed down to the bare shell - paint was done right.

Pix are:
1st is before the paint - and yes, I drove it on the track - my better half left her fingerprints in the seat ;) ;
2nd is after the paint;

Sorry I don't have a pic of it when new. As you may - or may not - be able to see in the 1st pic, the paint was crap. I couldn't stand it anymore, and had it done. Numerous trophies and awards. My better half & I dated in it starting in 1972. Our newborn son was brought home in it in '74. Our 19 year old grandson drove it for the 1st time last summer before going to boot camp. My mom also used it (she bought it for me in April '69 (after I failed in my endeavor to get a 427 copo car - I had a cool mom!), and that was the catch). So there it is - 4 generations! I named it "My Addiction" - a fitting name!

Thanks for lookin',
Mike.

Welcome to the CRG! Beautiful example, and good story. Are the stickers in the first pic significant? (on the mirror, and possibly upper rear quarter)

You say she left fingernail imprints on the seat, was that from a top speed on the track? mph?

I bought my 67 big block SS/RS 'vert May 12 1978. Eleven years to the day after it was delivered to the original owner. Has some good options, L78, remote mirror, AM/FM, console, M20 and a 3.73.  Bolero Red with a black top. Lots of fun over the years and lots of tickets too.

Odd to look back and see the big meats hanging out of the wheel wells, used to be status quo ! I put the Rally's back on in 90 and remember how out of place it looked. LOL.

Good looking launch in the 2006 pic.

Howdy all. Many thanks for the kind words and the welcome! Wish I'd found CRG a lot sooner - GREAT site.

Bullitt65: Stickers are a AAA on the mirror, and the other is a participant sticker at Daytona - it's on the lower corner of the windshield. LOL - fingerprints were just from the banks, not top speed. The officials wouldn't let us go fast enough to get up on the banks. They were VERY serious about the speed, too - there were motorcycle cops around the track with radar guns! I imagine it was so strict because of insurance liability. I know I had to try hard to control my right hoof! Lots of other tales, too. Like anybody else, I'll never be truly 'done' with it. There will ALWAYS be something that needs doing.

Y'all take care,
Mike.
