Title: MO302 partial vin of 18L335817
Post by: 67rsCOS on February 24, 2014, 03:53:15 AM
I pulled this engine out my 67 RS Camaro and have found out that it is a '68 MO302. I wanted to see if the original car was still out there and would love to have the car and engine reunited. The engine ran before I pulled it out and there were not any odd noises. I have not pulled it any farther apart than what you see, but was told that the engine was all original and had only been transplanted into the car. I know the carb and distributor are not original though. The owner of the rest of the car could have it for what I payed for it.

It has to be K 1 6 with a casting number of 3890462.  Heads aren't original '68 302 heads.

Yeah that's what I was thinking along with the after market fan and valve covers. Thanks Paul

That's a good question. 68 302 should be 291 heads. What did they use on the 67 302. 461 462?

Yes, the casting date of K 1 6 "translates" to November 1, 1966; so the heads are off a 1967 model year vehicle.  The 3890462 heads were used on Camaros, Chevelles, Corvettes, Novas, and full-size Chevys in 1967.  Do you know if the heads are 2.02s or 1.94s?

1967 302s could be equipped with either the 3890462 or the 3917291 cylinder heads.  1968 302s used only the 3917291 cylinder head.  The difference between '67 and '68 3917291 cylinder heads is the '68 heads were drilled and tapped for a water temperature sensor while '67 heads were not.  The 3782461 cylinder head was never used on the Camaro.

How would I tell the difference between 2.02s and 1.94s?

With the cylinder head removed from the block, measure the diameter of one of the intake valve heads.  If it measures just over 2", it is a 2.02 cylinder head and if measures less than 2", it is a 1.94 cylinder head.

If a dime won't fit between the intake valve and the exhaust valve, the valves are 2.02 intake and 1.60 exhaust. It's and old timers trick.   ;)

Sorry I took so long getting back to y'all. I've been pretty busy lately. The heads are 2.02s.

Factory 1967 3890462 2.02 heads originally came on...

1967 327cid/325hp Chevelles
1967 302cid/290hp Camaros (Z/28s)
1967 327cid/350hp Corvettes
1967 327cid/350hp Chevy IIs

Out of curiosity, what would 1.94s have been used on?

Do those heads have a machined pocket on the intake side or I'll re-phrase, should they? Do 462 and 291 heads (2.02) have machined area around intake valve? My only experience with 2.02s are 186 and 492(over the counter) heads I have had and they are machined. Usually a good way to tell if that is the valve that came in head opposed to being modified.

No.  If you were to take, for example, 186 heads with 1.94" intakes, and have them machined for 2.02 intake valve size, then you would also want to ask them to machine to 'unshroud' the valve.  Hope that answers your question.. :)
Note:  I really like the 1.94" valve heads on the street better than 2.02, as you'd have to be running very high rpms to justify the larger valve size.  1.94" run better and are more efficient for 90% of street driving.
