Title: Rosewood Wheel on Ebay
Post by: Azure1969Z/28 on January 22, 2014, 05:51:58 AM
Does this wheel look correct to anyone? Kinda hard to tell w/ the poor images, but it sure looks dark (almost walnut). Can't make out the grain in any of the pictures. http://www.ebay.com/itm/231140534698?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

It does look very dark, but I suspect it's just the lighting when the pictures were taken. May also explain why the grain is hard to make out, as you noted.

Sure looks like a early 69 walnut wheel to me.

It appears to be 'walnut' coloring to me as well.  Weren't some of the reproductions colored like that?

I am leaning towards the walnut too.  I have a GM walnut wheel on mine and it has that same shade.  Original rosewood do photo darker than in person, but not that dark.  Repro rosewoods wheels are more orange in pics than the real ones.

Wheel in the eBay ad sure seems like a walnut wheel with a 69 hub.

Other than the shallower dish, was there any other difference between the early 1969 model year N34 walnut (pre-rosewood) wheel, and the 1967-8 version?

I had a 67/68 walnut wheel. I remember it being deeper and larger diameter w/ the same 3 spoke overlapping design Purchased it for $15 out of a"junk yard"in the early 80,s, (it was like new condition). Sold it for $500 + a few years ago.

The 69 wheel used a smaller hub #3937896 for chevelle I would guess same as camaro.

Yes, it was - to Howard Elliott Motors in Hamilton, Ontario.

ZLP:  I'm curious.. did you see something in John's photos that triggered you to it being a Canadian car?  :)
JohnZ:  Did the McKinnon plant build 302's for Z28s? :)  or were high performance small blocks 'all Flint' as I've always believed?

Thanks John!
Gary - they were all Flint engines.

McKinnon didn't build any solid-lifter small-block engines - they all came out of Flint V-8.

Some detail pics of original walnut 69 wheel and horn button showing grain. One thing I like about the walnut wheel is it is probably the only part on a Camaro that
is NOT being reproduced...yet.

Ko-lec-tor,

Is that walnut wheel a '69 Camaro wheel, from an 'early '69' before rosewood?   What was the changeover date for that?

Yes it is a 69 Camaro wheel and end of November 68, I understand.

I've came across one or two of those at swap meets in the past, but didn't know what they were for..  shallow dish, sized/shaped like a '69 Camaro rosewood, but in walnut instead..  I guess I should have bought them (for trade material?) *G*

A buddy got  a very nice 69 Walnut wheel on a Z10 he bought, I treid to buy it for quite some time for my 69 (10b 68 build), but he would not sell.  Finally was able to trade him my 71 cowl air cleaner for it when he bought a BB El C.  Love the way it looks!  I have an original 69 Rosewood stored away for my SS :D

WOW that's over 5 times what I paid for my 70 1/2 RS in about '83 and over twice what I sold it for in '89. and 3 times more than I paid for a decent '69 Camaro i the early 80's and more than I paid for my '69 Z (glad I still have that on cause it has a rosewood wheel). None of the cars were NOS but they all had nice steering wheels (+ 4 0ther wheels, 5 with the spare and fly wheels) (:

I am sure I saw this wheel at the swap meet in Raleigh NC a year or so ago. It was in the box. Sold for $2500.00.

There could be more than one of them 'nos in the box'.. :)      and it always seems like HBC prices are 2X-3X greater than what you can buy the same thing somewhere else for??  :)
