Title: Who would be interested in buying a replacement passenger seat cable?
Post by: sdkar on January 18, 2014, 02:09:37 AM
Hey guys,

I was wondering if there is a big enough need out there for replacement passenger seat cables.  These are the small cables that keep the seatback from hitting the dash when tilting it forward.

In order to make these, I would have to have the items custom made and bulk ordered through my company.  These seat cables would be aircraft cable, coated in a similar grey color coating.  The color would not be exact, but as close as I can get with the material colors offered.  I can have them in either all black, for 67 and 68, or grey for 69.

I certainly don't want to go through the expense and trouble of all this if not enough people show an interest, but will gladly do it iif I can at least cover my initial costs.

If enough people tell me they would be interested in these, I could probably have these made and sold for about $15 each, more or less, depending again, on how many people would buy them.

Here is a photo of the prototype.  The holes in this one are slightly larger than OE, but my supplier said if I order a large enough quantity, he will make the holes in the ends the exact size we want.

So, let me know.  If I get enough of you guys to tell me you are interested, I will go ahead and do it.

Steve

I'm in.  There was a thread about this a while ago and it seemed a lot of people would like to get them.

Steve, I would be in for two in grey if the holes are correct. Other than that they look really close. George

I see no evidence that my original seats in my late '69 production car ever had them.. ie. no holes in the seat covering for the pivot pin.   Were these cables only used in cars that had no headrest perhaps?   This would explain the rarity of these cables...

They were only fitted to the passenger side bucket seat, but feature in the Fisher Body Manual (see Fig. 15-47) for all 'F' and 'Z' body styles, with bucket seats. Can you be sure it's the original seat cover? Cables snapped over time and were junked, hence why they're not often seen nowadays.

Okay, it looks like the cables will be a go.

Is there anyone out there that has the washer for the cable that can lend it to me to get that reproduced as well?

I need it for about a month to get the die made and get these redone.  If you can loan me your washer, I will send it back to you, unharmed, along with a cable (your color choice) and a brand new washer as well.

If you can help with this, email me and we can make the arrangments.

I'd be in for 2 gray cables (assuming of course that you'd be happy to post the to Australia at my cost?).

Was one used per car and attached to the left side (tunnel side) of the passenger seat? I don't see one in my pics on the drivers seat.

Not needed on driver's side as the seat hit the steering wheel so only the passenger side had one.

Well, after tons of research, phone calls, samples, and some engineering of my own, I have been able to order and customize components to make what I feel, are almost perfect reproductions of the passenger seat cable.  The size, length, thickness, and eyelets are exact.  The only thing not exact is a slight difference in the shading of grey, which may be from age.  I have also found correct shoulder bolts as well, in case anyone needs these too.  I am still working on the washer, and have something in the works where I may be able to get them made in the next few months.  I have made the cables in both grey and black.  I guarantee each to be exact and as strong as the factory GM cables.  If the cable breaks, I will replace it for free.

I am hoping that $9 for a seat cable is considered fair, as I am simply trying to cover my costs.  If you need a pair of shoulder bolts as well, they would be an add'l $5.  Shipping is $3.

If you are interested, please email me and let me know what you need.  You can send me payment through snail mail, or paypal is fine if that is easier.

Thanks guys,

Steve

Steve, I'd still be interested in 2 gray cables and 2 sets of mounting bolts, if you're happy to ship to Australia. Just let me know total and your PayPal email details by PM. Interested in a couple of the special washers too, if you end up getting them made.
(And before anyone points out only 1 cable is required per car, I have an original cable but want a couple of spares while they're available).

I just received a cable, they look GREAT! Looks exactly as GM did it back then. The color is a little bit bright , but I think that because they are new compared to a 46 year old part. I think you did a fine job! Good luck with the washers  Keep up the good work.  Thanks Dave

Hey guys,

I am glad that you satisfied with the cables.

Due to a bigger demand than I expected, I am out of shoulder bolts.  I hope to get more in the next month or so, and will order them when the washer is hopefully ready.

In the mean time, I have the cables in both black and grey and will be happy to continue providing them as long as they are needed and requested.

Email me with any questions, or your order at the following email:

Thanks,

Steve

I just wanted to add a note...this weekend I took a few of the family for a ride in the Z. I don't normally take it out at a function like our annual 4th of July/combo birthday and anniversary party we had because 100 people want to 'GO FOR A RIDE'...anyway, when I pullled the car out I finally remembered to check to see if the seat cable was still with the passenger seat and there it was. Don't know why I never noticed it before. Just one of those thinks that I like about CRG and it's members. I have got to pay attention to the details.

Hey guys, I still have a few of these left, so if anyone is interested in getting one, please contact and let me know.  After these are gone, I will not be making anymore, and that will be it.  So, check your cable and if you need one, or think you might need one, get it now.  Once these are gone, they are gone.

Nope, I sent my washer to AMK, and they had it for 5 months.  I finally had to ask for it back.  I asked if they were going to make these, and was told that they simply did not have time, but maybe in the future.  This was about 2 years ago, and they still do not offer it.  We can get the cables and the shoulder bolts, but no one offers a washer...too bad.

Gary here's a picture of my seat stop cable washer with measurements added. I posted this a while back but can't find the thread right now, not sure if it was here or at TC. The max thickness was from a flat horizontal surface, so picked up the overall as-stamped dimension, but don't think I measured the thickness of the flat plate from which it was stamped.....

Thanks Tim... :)  ...    a fairly complex and large washer...  Was there only one used on each cable, or was there one used on each end of the cable (adjacent to the upholstery, under the cable/nut??  I suppose) to prevent chaffing on the upholstery??

If your washer dimensions were not archived here before, they are now... :)

That's right Gary, one cable per car (passenger side only) and one washer as pictured used, located on the seat base to protect the upholstery. The upper end of the cable was attached directly to the inside of the seat hinge arm. There's some good detail pictures posted in this thread: http://www.camaros.org/forum/index.php?topic=8970.0;all

It doesn't appear that my car's passenger seat ever had such a cable.   There is no evidence that a cable was ever installed (see photo attached).  Mine is a 'late' 09C (built 18Sep1969) car that I purchased in April 1976.  The seats were worn/faded at the time I purchased the car; it's been garaged since; not driven since 1980.  I do not believe 'reproduction seat covers' were available in the '76 timeframe, because I was looking to replace my worn/faded covers and had no success.

It seems there's a possibility that Fisher made a 'model change' to their seat specs during these late months.  Did 1970 models employ such a cable??  I don't recall the '70 Z28 I owned in the early 80s to have such a cable either.

Does anyone with a late '69 car have an original cable in their car?   If you have a 'late' '69 Camaro (Sept-Dec), please let us know the est build week and originality of your car and if it had a cable in it when purchased?

thanks

That I can't help you with Gary, but it doesn't appear a cable was used on the 1970 Camaro. At least I can't find one being referenced in any of the P&A's.

I asked the same question in post 41 of this thread (back in 2016), and no one has ever responded, yea or nay!~   I'm sure there's a couple of other Sept'69 or later Camaros that could be checked....?

Gary it could just be that the supplier had completed anticipated production for the scheduled end of the '69 MY and the cable wasnt considered 'essential' enough to commission another run when it was realised production would continue for a few months longer.....

I never paid attention to mine but this got me curious.  Since we use ours daily and frequently use the back seat, I already knew the passenger seat would lay forward on the dash.  So I figured it wasn't there.

I looked and sure enough it was actually there.  Someone had disconnected the lower half and looped it up to the upper connection.  I guess they didn't like it.  Looking at it now, it does appear rather short, so not sure I even want to hook it back up.  It's nice to lay the seat all the way forward to access the back.  I may temporarily hook it up for giggles just to check it but it looks like it will limit the seat from at least half of it's movement making rear seat access more difficult.

I thought that might be a possibility also, Tim, which is why I was hoping a few other owners of late (extended production time period) 69 Camaros would pipe up... I would assume that part would have been installed when the seat was manufactured??

I finally looked at my 67 11B LOS which originally had black deluxe interior.  Gray cable even though seats were black.  Seated were recovered etc. back in the 80s.  Fortunately the upholstery guy put it back in.

I noted that headrest seats probably wouldn't have these, or would require a shorter cable to prevent hitting the dash pad.
