Title: Dave Strickler Z 28
Post by: oldtransamdriver on January 14, 2014, 02:36:53 AM
Much noise being made this week at the BJ auction about the Dave Strickler 68 Z28 drag race car.  musclecarsworld.com  Apr 2013 has the story on this drag racing icon.
I am impressed by the 11:70s @ 116 this car used to turn in it's heyday with only a "stock" 302 Grumpy built engine and 5:38 gears.

I'm guessing that factory Penske T/A cars of that year might have turned high 12's or low 13's with road race gears

Robert, it will be very interesting to see what the car sells for, if it does indeed sell. Lots of great history and a championship winning car in '68.
I think with Jerry MacNeish owning it and competing with in in NHRA several years back, he was running in the low 10.40s but I could be confusing
that with his current '67 Z. Anyway, far faster than the Penske cars would have been back in the day in a straight drag race.

Wonder how many Camaros that car helped sell ? It inspired the look of my car back in 69---started out a Plain Jane per #1.

Matter of fact we drag race an Anglia, nostalgic gasser stuff, and I was on YouTube looking at some vid of it . On a whim typed in 68 z/28 and came across Jerry M. pulling gears in Old Reliable. Those 302's have a certain sound to them when they wail ,and the way it resonates through the car... have to experience to know what I'm talking about. I ran/run stronger small blocks ,not the same. ( 90" WB cars are a hoot too, different website) Sent a chill up the spine and reminded me I have one ! So in a way that old war horse inspired me to get rolling on the one to the left---Day 2 of course.

Very curious to see what it pulls at BJ this weekend. Sort of the Holy Grail for guys with 68 z's.

Sold for 253 K according to a report on the CRG forum.  It was sold during a TV commercial break the report said.

How about the Dave Heinz IMSA corvette for 2.5 MILLION! and the Shelby Cooper Monaco King Cobra for 1.5 M!

The Corvette prices seem to be going through the roof lately but evidently the Camaros aren't following suit.
