Title: Intake manifold bolts - 69z28
Post by: sixt9x33rs on January 12, 2014, 03:37:23 PM
Guys,

Has anyone seen an original intake manifold bolt with a bolt head that is a "C" with three radial lines? My Silver Z came with a bucket of fasteners and there are these fasteners with the "C" that are the right number and the right specs as the intake manifold bolts. The car had incorrect intake manifold bolts in it when I got it. My original 67 Vette L79 has these type of fasteners installed in the intake manifold so I am thinking these may be correct for the Silver Z.

Let me know your thoughts

Yes, I remember looking at a nice original 69 Z28 in the early 80's that used the same bolts on the intake manifold.

On second count I have eight "C" head fasteners and two "RSW" fasteners. I am missing the two shouldered fasteners. Let me know if you think these "C" fasteners can be intake manifold bolts.

Don't know about a 1969 but my 1968 Z28 had intake manifold bolts like that.

Was for sure one of their used suppliers!  I've noticed that head mfg. marking a lot used at the alternator bracket to alternator.

I have never seen a "C" intake bolt, but they sure look like intake bolts.

The bolts are same as the ones I saw on the 69 Z28.

Guys,

I went to the junk yard yesterday and found a few good engines with the original intake manifold fasteners on them. First off I ran across a 1965 "HB" coded block. 327/300 HP four speed HP engine in an old Chevy pickup. The intake manifold bolts had the "C"  and "M" head marks. I harvested all 12 and now are soaking in a bucket of Simple Green. I then ran across a 68 Impala with the "HJ" stamped block. 327/250 four barrel PG engine. This engine still had the original lifting hooks with the "shouldered fasteners". The shouldered fasteners had "FP" head marks. Most of the intake manifold bolts had already been removed from this intake manifold but I did remove one which was coded "CS" inside a circle with three radial lines. Lastly, I ran across a 67 four door Chevelle. This car had the 327/275 PG with AC installed. I was running out of time so I just took one intake manifold bolt out of it and it was a "M". I also got a decent 834 alternator with a Jan 20 1969 date code from the 65 Chevy Truck. Went to Autozone to test it and it passed. Pretty funny....So in summary I am going to put on the Silver car the "C" head mark intake manifold fasteners that came in a box with other parts. I am guessing these were on the car originally. When I got the car the engine had just been rebuilt and the engine shop used new fasteners on the intake.

As far as I know the intake bolts were un-shouldered except for the bolts on the engine lift brackets. They should be shouldered.

I agree. That is what I found in the junkyard, and what I put on my car.

As far as I know the bolt head marking should be an "M".

There was more than one vendor for intake bolts for sure.

Also note that the un-shouldered bolts should not have washers.

I found in the junk yard both "M" and "C" head marks. The 68 Impala had "CS" head marks. The shouldered fasteners holding the lifting hooks did not have washers per your note 69Z28freak. The other fasteners on the intake are washerless too, right?

That is correct. No washers used on any bolts on the intake. That is why the lift brackets have the shouldered, built in washers for extra lifting support.

So are the shouldered bolts used on the lift brackets longer to account for the added thickness of the brackets?

Yes the non shouldered is 1 1/8", and the shouldered fastener is 1 5/16"
