Title: Undercoating on inside of quarter panel ???
Post by: DAVEN1256 on January 08, 2014, 08:25:54 PM
I am debating whether to try to replicate the factory undercoating that came on the inside of my original quarter panels and trying to look at the pros and cons.

Would having it in the trunk area help keep noise out of the passanger compartment?......I want my passenger compartment to be quiet as it can possibly be. .........On my original quarters, the sound deadener ran from near the tail panel all the way forward of the wheel house to the area covered by the rear seat side panel. I can put Dynamat or similar in the side panel area but don't want anything like that showing in the trunk.

Right now, with no sound deadener on the inside of the quarter panel, if you tap on it from the outside, it sounds like the Tin Man from the Wizard of Oz.......I hate that tinny sound.

My only concern about it was being told moisture could get behind it and cause rust. It would going on top the DP90 primer that is on the inside of the quarter panel now. I could see rust on my original quarters right where some of the factory undercoating had flaked off making me think that it's a possibility.

If I decide to do this, can anyone recommend what to use that would deaden the sound and look original?

Thanks.................Dave

I used the 3m black body schutz for the sound deadner in the trunk & wheel wells. It looks like a good match to the factory stuff. You can apply it in a light or heavy coat if you prefer. George

You can't compare today's epoxy to products and procedures used back then. Undercoating is not going to make the epoxy you are using fail and the panel rust.

The factory undercoating/sound deadening inside my original inner fenders seems to have been applied in a very specific pattern, almost as if they used a mask.  Does anyone if this is true for sure?  and are masks for those patterns available?

Thanks for the responses.  OK, now I know there is no harm in doing this. So the next this is choosing the right product. I now there are things you can spray from a can and stuff you shoot from a gun. Is there there stuff in a can that looks original and will last or should you definitely spray something from a gun?

3M
From a Can : 3M™ No Cleanup High Coverage Body Schutz™ Coating 08964
From a Gun : 3M™ Body Schutz™ Rubberized Coating, Black, Quart, 08864

I prefer the quart and special gun for application. Careful practice and masking can yield spectacular results as indicated by photo above. The inside trunk pattern looks to be HEAVY, pour it on!

Here's the original undercoating on the inside of the rear quarters in the trunk of my 02D '69 Z/28 - pretty sloppy, doesn't appear that any kind of mask or pattern was used. None of it has flaked or shows any sign of failure under the spatter paint after 45 years.

I agree John... where it appeared from viewing my car that a 'mask' was used , was inside the front inner wheel wells.

Mine was done very "liberal" and I'm leaving it. Looks like new in there---someone don't like it--too bad LOL ! Cars in the shop or I'd post some pics.

To get the build like the original the Lord Fusor product looks dead on.
IT DOES require a special gun to apply.

A friend has a 68Z true survivor and its a late built 07D car that has a very distinct pattern in the trunk walls. Guess it had to be some type of mask on this one.

68 L78 03D NOR

I think what everyone is seeing is a pass or two with the spray gun and that is why it is leaving uniform edges.  Have to remember these were on assembly lines and they were just hitting these things and moving on.

Based on what I've seen I believe there was a template or mask used. The coverage area certainly varies but the pressure used, nozzle and distance away contribute to the variations in coverage.

Hi John, I see your car has a trunk mat. Is your car equipped with deluxe interior or did someone add that. BTW your trunk and spatter paint are very well preserved.

The 68's seem to have a more definite vertical edge at the start of the application but a little more random spray on the horizontal edges. I have seen original low milage 69's with a more random pattern but a defined edge near the rear marker lamp. 1st picture is a 5k 69, 2nd is a 30k 69, 3rd is how I sprayed it. I think you can see the same edge in JohnZ's rt quarter picture. Since we are looking in trunks does anyone have an extra rear wire harness clip I pointed out? George

I don't know if the painters gun clogged or he was high (it was 1969)

Thanks to everyone for their replies on this.

All of the reference pictures are great. I didn't take enough reference pictures of the undercoating on my car before it was taken apart.  They are a big help.
