I serached several forums and I have a good engine bay finish scheduel and they say the upper spring is phosphate but what about the assembly it rests on? I was thinging it was like the lower assembly and the entire unit was phosphate? The repo sets are black or chrome mine is now semi black. So is the entire assembly phosphate or just the spring, adjusting screw and plate?

The whole assembly is phosphate.

Thanks Mike, I must have looked at 100 cars or more on line and all were black top and bottom assemblies!

The upper spring was semi-gloss black, I recently found out. George

Are you talking about the hood springs or the latch spring?
Hood (hinge assembly)= phosphate and latch= black.

Correct upper hood latch spring should be semi gloss black. everything else phosphate. However, note that there are 2 types of phosphates used. Zink and Maganese. Zink is the lighter grey colour and is used on hood hinges, as well as upper and lower hood latches. Maganese phosphate is used on nuts bolts, cage nuts and other body fatteners.

Thanks guys. Its not a show car but so I used the paint of similar color so at least its not black. On the Rolls Bentley cars I restored all fastners are silver cad and zinc looks close but fads. Im guessing the Manganese will do the same on fastners?
Am I to assume that all fastners are zinc colored maganese in a Camaro? Or just select ones?

IMHO hinges were a dark coloration and many are restored too light. Also it might be misleading to say manganese phosphate was used or should be used for all nuts, bolts, fasteners, etc.... I looked at original parts and parts from suppliers like AMK (very similar in color) and decided the manganese was too dark for many small items.
Happy Holidays everyone!

Thanks Chick, but I didn't say all nuts and bolts etc. I was using those parts as examples of parts that would get that colour of finish. One should do the research and finish accordingly. Have a great holiday and Merry Christmas.

My NOS latch spring is painted - semi gloss of semi flat, hard to tell. I bought it 15-20 yeqars ago, one of the last to appear on the locators, still have the package but the spring resides on my Pace Car.
