Just installed my rear license plate after installing a new gas tank and got to wondering if there is suppose to be a bracket back there. My rear plate and frame has always been bent from tightening the screws to secure it.

I have never seen a bracket for the rear plate for a '67. Neither of my'67 have it.

First question, are you talking about '67? If so there should just be 2 plastic square Nut-serts on top. They simply snap into the Body panel (should be 2 square holes, about 3/8 in.). At the bottom there should be 2 rubber bumpers, also just snap into holes already in the panel(maybe 1/4 in. round). Here's a pic.;

That is how mine is set up, but it almost seems the license lamp bracket causes it to catch the plate when tightening it and bends the top portion of the plate and frame

If everything is aligned properly you need to tip the top edge of the Plate in behind the edge of the License Light before tightening the screws.

I noticed that on my 68 as well. I added a few washers behind the plate and still had to put a slight bend in 2 places at the top of the plate for clearance.
