Wow....505 HP. I assume that is at the rear wheels too.
I'm still trying to get use to the fact that the new Z-28 has a big block instead of a small block.

It's a small block, just not a 302

 A seven-liter is now a 427 CID small block?   ???

The more renderings I see of the 2016 Camaro the better the 2014 looks. I wish the 2013 and prior could have shed the weight and had a Z/28 version. I like the front and rear better than the current Camaro. IMO

I went to the Mecum Auction on Sat., lot of nice cars.  Saw the HURST Hemi Under Glass collection, got Bob Riggle's autograph, and Linda Vaughn's autograph.  Had a good time.

Take back my earlier opinion ! Drinking my morning coffee watching this rose the hair on my arms , awesome.

Big cube small blocks have been around for  years ,and very popular in the gasser mix.

The Supers(circle track) who traditionally run alky injected big blocks began making the switch--more in New York ,slower to catch on in Ohio but guys are winning with them--not without protests. Not my crowd but a friend of mine is  into it--- you want a bullet proof motor built, see whose pulling hard out of the corners with these guys and who they use.

Back to the Z ,wonderful to see not just a stickered up grocery getter coming off the line but the real deal ,also considering the availability of the COPO for Super Stock, looks like GM's heavy into R&D--- and competition always leads to a better product for the consumer.

I want mine in  Cortez Silver !

Mike
it is a corvette Z0-6 engine, same basic engine as the 6.2 liter corvette engine just with a 4" stroke and CNC ported heads

Price point is expected to be GREATER than the current ZL1 model, which starts around $53k I think.

Thankfully, the Blue Ray Metallic/Concord Metallic looks very close to Dusk Blue :)

So now what makes a small block different than a big block these days? I thought it used to be dictated by CID size (with the 400 CID small block aside).

Those new Camaros are hot...I'd go for a new Z28. Wish I could afford the price tag. What's the deal with the black rims anyway?  Is black the new chrome? Does GM offer anything else other than black rims? Even my son just painted the nice chrome wheels that came on his trailBalzer black, his is white. Kind of looks ghetto. Probably a new generation think I suppose.

And even accounting for inflation, that's twice in today's dollars what a Z cost in 68....  :o

Mike

It's design, not CID.  Ford has had motor designs with virtually the same CID, but one was a small block and the other a big block.

Apparently, we first gen lovers are not in Chevy's market target....  ::)

What differentiates the two is bore center spacing - the LS engines are 4.4", which has been small-block bore spacing since 1955; big-block bore center spacing is 4.84".

What JohnZ said...:) ...  and of course, that larger bore spacing for the old big blocks, also made for a *larger physical size* of the engines, which precipitated the terminology of 'BIG block'...  :)

Related question:  Was the 'old' 348/409' (1958-1964) series engines also on a 4.84" bore spacing?   If not, does anyone know what it was?

Quote from Chevrolet.com:
From 1929 and 1955, Chevrolet only offered six-cylinder engines. To address the burgeoning performance market, chief engineer Ed Cole set out to design a Chevrolet V-8 that was powerful, lightweight and affordable. His solution was elegantly simple: a compact, efficient 90-degree V-8 engine, featuring overhead valves, pushrod valvetrain, and 4.4-inch on-center bore spacing. The Chevrolet Big Block follows the same formula, with the exception of a wider 4.8 inch bore spacing.

I just checked out the specs for the new LS7 (427) and older 400 CID motor. I see the new LS7 is stroked compared to the older 400.  Between the two blocks If the bores (4.125") are the same as well as the centerlines to call it a small block does the LS7 have Siamese cylinders?

Thanks,
Mike

Yes, it does.

Although I've never worked with an LS engine, I believe ALL the LS engines, from LS1 thru LS? are siamesed, but since these engine blocks are aluminum, I'm suspecting that due to the better heat transfer characteristics of Al vs Fe, that the siamesed cylinders are not a thermal problem as they could be with the old 400 block?

Those LS7 motors are incredible and pull from start to finish. And with the brakes, suspension and light weight I'd love to have one.
Watch this and see what you think....

Okay, so which is the faster car?  According to what I have read...the Z28 is has a biggern engine, is faster and is more expensive than the ZL1...The world no longer makes sense.

http://www.autoguide.com/auto-news/2013/03/2014-chevrolet-camaro-z28-faster-than-zl1.html

http://wot.motortrend.com/totd-2014-chevrolet-camaro-z28-or-zl1-which-would-you-pick-417027.html#axzz2iCKYSb00

I suppose the Z28 is a stripped down purely track car, whereas the ZL1 is an all out fast street/strip/touring car?  Am I wrong.

And for the record, please tell me the renderings for the 2016 prototype Camaro is not true....ewwwwww.

I just watched a video from Jay lenos garage, int he video the GM rep says they are going to limit production to 1500 units per year. But when asked about price he just says north of the ZL-1. So if a ZL-1 base price is around 56k, the Z/28 may be around 60 to 62k? I am still hunting for a definitive price on this machine.
