All,
For the satin black that went on the rockers for RS cars, light exterior paint, did the upper edge fold into the car so you actually saw the black on the near horizontal when you opened the door or did it stop at the effective bottom of the door when the door was shut?
Thanks,
-
for '69's.. it stops behind the rocker molding....
-
Thanks!
-
If you mean the top edge, I thought it was under the polished strip that was secured to the rocker.
At least for '67.

Sorry ,nothing to add but a few more questions : Were all 68-67 RS blacked out at rockers ?
Did it go into lip of front fender/rear quarter ?
My Z did not come with the RS package ,but was added by #2 owner sometime in 69-70 ( Old Reliable look ,down to locking gas cap, SW gauges ,console delete)
It's in paint/body now and my guy has been asking how I want it done---body color all the way down past rockers with overspray underneath ,off the line or blacked out ? I'm keeping with the RS look but want it shot correct. Also what " black " was used ? Same as stripes ,or different shade ?
Once again ,sorry I have nothing to add here but this should expand the thread a bit.
BTY never have and never will try to pass this off as a RS optioned car . At this point it's going to be fun telling the history at meets.

Only light colored cars were blacked out. It is my understanding that the shade was more of a satin finish, same as tail panel for big block 67/68 Camaros. Pretty sure they went from wheel well to wheel well, tracking with the rockers, so in effect everything below RS chrome trim was blacked out.
-
thanks

When I restored my 67 w/RS option in the 80's what you stated is what my notes mention as for where the blackout edge top was.
Back in the days digital cameras were rare so I have a binder with a lot of hand written notes and a few photos. As for the gloss level, that has been covered a few times here in CRG and I believe the gloss of the firewall, R/S black out and in cases w/big block's, the tail blacked out with the same gloss level. I believe it was John Z. who said something along the lines that it wasn't practical to have separate gloss levels for all those three areas mentioned whic hmakes sense.
When I restored my 67 ragtop in the 80's I used GM reconditioning black paint for those areas and that looked correct for gloss.

Here are some pictures of a 68 RS Survivor I took at the Camaro Nationals. If you n need more I can find some more pictures of survivor cars. Thanks, Scoop
-
Interesting looking at the survivor, as of Sunday my cars been stripped ---- what was on it matched the pics so many years ago attention was paid to detail, and it ran the full diameter of the lips. Was always told it was a good idea being " cheap" and easy to touch up stone chips. The color wasn't flat but not quite as much sheen as the survivor.
-
Now I know. Rockers were correct, take it up a little on the lips than body color--satin---thanks again.
-
But the original poster was asking about 1967, I assume, by reading his signature.
It looks like 68-69 was differently applied.

67 still had the same rocker mldgs as the 69. My 67 RS/SS has blacked out rockers and the black ends under the rocker mldg.
-
Where does the black paint top lay on yours? Inside and visible in the door sill area?
If so then that would mean the black paint top border extended above the spear moulding.
Mike
-
I can't thank you all enough. You have flushed out what I intend to do. Mine is an original RS/SS with original tranny/rear-end, but the original engine is long gone. I was able to find a correctly coded SS-350 that was sent through the same factory six weeks after the car. Both car and engine being stamped in '66.
She will be built exactly to the trim tag, however I have taken some liberties...
All suspension, brakes, steering, sway bars, etc... are new. Sound deadening throughout.
On the sill, I will have everything below the trim and wrapped up into the interior like shown in the '68 then call it a day.
Thanks again very much. I went after sill questions a while back with 'crickets' as a response. Seems like this is a tough question to definitively answer.

Matt,
I am not so sure that the '68 is the same as '67. In other words, I don't think the black extends in to the door sill to be visible for an R/S option car.
I can only go by my notes taken from the 80's when I restored my car and in it I listed "black rocker top paint line under thin R/S strip"
and "black paint extends and wraps around edges" (edges meaning wheel opening).
Doing it that way by having the paint line under the metal strip would certainly not have the paint extend visible into the sill area.
Now I am having doubts too so unless I can see a '67 (I am assuming you mean 67 too???) with original blackout then I'm sticking by my notes. My other '67 with original paint and R/S option is Tahoe Turquoise so there was no rocker blackout to reference.

My last post( I spend way too much time on this site :D)
Could there not have been some variation ? There has always been some debate on underside finish ,overspray/primer. When I stripped it underneath this summer (sucked) and got down to the layer of body color : passenger side had overspray heavy under rockers well under drivers seat, pass side very light under rocker--above the tank might as well been bare metal. Maybe the painter's knees were beginning to hurt! Any more pics from survivors would be welcome from me also. To me these imperfections from the factory are where the detail hides today.
-
Yup. I am definitely talking 67 RS.
-
I didnt realize 67 had the blackout in the rocker area.. Was it at the beginning of production?

I don't know if it was at the very beginning but my 5B Butternut Yellow has it.
That picture is likely a press release model and we know how they can vary from the actual at times.
I see it's lacking the engine size fender emblems.

That is true.. I'll see if I can dig some more & find more vintage photos.

Learn something new every day.. Several pics I've found are very hard to see it but you can tell its darker than the rest of the car.. It's very hidden on the 67 &/or I just never noticed it before.. :P

I do have a 'New Camaro' brochure on the Camaro which would have come out ahead of the line. None of the artist renditions in the brochure, even the lighter ones has the blacked out rockers, however... in the text, buried deep late in the publication, the very last sentence of the last paragraph actually, states, "Also, depending on exterior color, body sill is black below side molding when Rally Sport is specified" The bow-tie and 350 fender emblem also are missing throughout the entire magazine.
I had my car blasted prior to digging down into the colors. Under my door sill plate the color is definitely the original Sierra Fawn as I had that taped off prior to blasting to keep a reference color. I did not blast the fenders yet and was able to sand down where the bumble bee stripe was and found black. I will look for the sill paint here soon.
Mine was a NOV '66 production.
In the picture above, that is a snapshot of the first Camaro commercial done, a 2 minute commercial on Youtube and the sill paint on that car is definitely not blacked out. Solid shots of the car throughout the commercial.
My suspicions are that it truly was an after thought that hit right when the cars met the dealers for the first time and then cars were then shot from then on.
-
Again, this is from an 11B build code Camaro out of LOS. My glove box sticker is still readable with '5 passenger' limitation, indicating likely prior to 16 Nov 66 for build date.
Front fender shows that sill paint, at least on the fender, began well above standard trim piece and solidly behind RS trim piece.
Passenger door sill shows no paint under door trim piece.
Don't know if this helps anyone... pending further info, I will likely paint on top of rocker lip going into door sill, but stop it there. May go up under the door sill trim like the '68 shown previously.
Won't be painting for a while though...

Upscope,
I emailed pics of my 67's original rockers black out paint (10B). Hope they help. GW
-
As I understand it from reading the assembly process article, the front fenders were painted by Chevrolet and Fisher built and painted the main body. The blackouts were done in separate paint shops (Fisher and Chevy) so the fenders and main body sill blackouts may not line up.
Is there original paint on the rockers to reference the top edge?

I'd sure would like to see them too!

Sill paint does not go into door sill. Along the rocker it stops behind the standard trim below RS trim. GW thanks very much! Matt

All,
Courtesy of GW... Thanks very much!

That's what I was trying to say!

PERFECT! A picture is worth a thousand words, as the saying goes. These pictures align with my notes I took in the '80's about the blackout. The paint edge was under the spear molding and didn't protrude into the top sill area and these pictures prove that. I also notice the front fender anchor support area, after the rocker edge fold, looks to have had no tape hence no defined edge.
Thank You!

x77... you had it right all along. I went back and read your first post. When you said 'rocker' for some reason I was thinking RS...

Yea...me too. I confused rocker with R/S door molding. At times I don't understand those Long Islander's ;)

Was Sequoia Green too dark to get the black sill treatment?
