Title: Open element air cleaner
Post by: 69Z28 on October 13, 2013, 07:09:45 AM
Hey guys, I found an open element air cleaner "supposed to be for a 69 Z28" The price was right and I couldn't wait for pics of an OEM piece to compare it. I'm hoping I didn't make a mistake. It really doesn't look bad but I just want to make sure what I bought is OEM and not reproduction or god forbid one for a Rochester  carb. Anybody have a pic of the bottom piece? Top and bottom of it so I can look at it? The pics I have are too close to even tell. Anybody care to give me a thumps up one way or the other? I had sent email asking if it had the silk screening under the lid, but I don't think I would have gotten an answer before someone else snatched it up. Know what I mean?

Thanks guys. I found both of those post earlier before I actually bought the AC. I couldn't really tell if it was OEM from the pic the seller had and I really have no clue. The first link refers to the ZL2 AC and it probably isn't different from the open element AC on the bottom. The only pic I have is a bottom shot of the one I bought. The other link doesn't have a whole lot about the bottom plate, just the silk screen stuff.

Jim your pic is huge man. I copied it to my computer and as soon as it comes in I'll compare. I was just thinking maybe you guys could tell me something. I'm thinking it's an older reproduction and should be able to tell if the silk screen isn't on the lid bottom. I'll keep ya'll posted.

Sorry about the pic size. I can't ever seem to get this re-sizing thing right. If you want, I can take some more pics and e mail them to you. Silk screen, and better pics of bottom. I'll try not to blow up you computer, ha ha.

I have a few programs that will help you out resizing things. First one works great, it's called 'IRFANVIEW" and I love it. Does a lot of different things really.

I'll have to send them to your email address since they are too big to just put in the post. So check out your email asap.

HOT NOTE*** Jimmy you have email.

Not a problem. I need to park my survivor 69 Azure Turquoise Impala next to your Z so I can get a pic. Big brother with little brother kind of thing.

I got the air cleaner in the mail today. Lid appears to be OEM, It has the silk screen on the underside referencing the A 212 CW filter. The base is the wrong one though and I have to return it for the correct one. Seller said he has 3 of these and made a mistake and sent me the wrong one. The tube is missing off this base and the base in the pic has the tube. This base does look OEM too.

Sounds like the seller was hoping you just licked your wounds and went away. I don't beleive that he made a "MISTAKE".  Care to ID the seller?

Sutton5555. I'm just sending the base back per his instructions. The lid is OEM for sure compared to the reproduction lid I have.

This is a copy of Darrells lid from another post and this is what is on the lid I just got in. I suppose there isn't enough info to say if the curved printing was pre 69 and straight printing is 69 model year is there. I wonder if what I have is for the 68 Z28 and not 69 unless they are the same.

That was part of the research on the other thread was to try to pin point the time frame of the change.  We know Steve's 01C car is straight and Im still waiting on rare396bronze confirmation on his lid being straight or curved.  My initial thought is that the lid is for a 68 at this point but it is still a little early to know 100%.

I would really love to hear from some other late 68 & early 69 cars if they have the original lid..

Anybody with an 06A 69 Z with an OEM open element AC out there? With what I see and read so far I'm thinking I possibly will end up with a 68 AC instead of a 69 AC then.

Here's another question I have. How common is the elbow that goes in the valve cover to connect to the open element AC? A.I.M. has part #3923260 for Z28 open element page 473 UPC Z28 A5 also page 483 ZL2 A3 has it for RPO L48. So was there no difference in the connector (elbow) use? At least I'll know what to look for if I have to find one.

My original 1968 07C Z28 has the curved lettering.
