Does a missing trim tag ruin all value on a 1967 camaro? Aside from what the vin says how else can you verify originality?

There is far too much paranoia over trim tags.
The only real significance they have is establishing a car was in fact built with certain valuable options, usually high-performance. For '67 an SS or Z/28 is in trouble if the tag is missing or has been replaced. If that isn't the case and you're just planning to make a hot rod out of it no one will care. If your restoring it to original condition down the road it may discourage some people. The tag has nothing to do with title or registration. Installing a non-original tag in an attempt to pass the car off as something it wasn't can get you in trouble.
Don't ever buy a car with a missing or altered VIN tag.

"The tag has nothing to do with title or registration" William, in most states I am sure you are right about that but not in Kansas. When I bought my 69 Z a couple years ago from out of state, I went to register it and by law all out of state titles and cars have to be inspected by the State Highway Patrol. He inspected both tags and he wrote on his report that "Paint plate agrees to year". Not sure what kind of registration problems it would have caused me had it been missing. Also just read that it is illegal to sell a car in Oklahoma with a missing or altered trim tag.

I would assume "plate tag" meant the VIN tag which has the year embedded in the sequence.

Yes Mike it is only the VIN is checked. Not all manufactures even used trim tags.

On my car it was both tags that the Highway Patrol checked. I watched him do it and then he wrote on his report "Paint Plate agrees to year" He was checking to see if the year on the trim tag matched the year on the VIN and title. This was Kansas don't know about other states.
Oklahoma did pass this law

Do they ever enforce those laws? there are a lot ,more cars out there with new trim tags it seems

CA looks at both if the car was so equipped from the manufacturer. However, the vin and build date is all they concentrate on. They couldn't care less about the options.

Well in California with any cars that old, you are the expert, the DMV employee in charge of inspections has asked me what they should be looking for. I also have had them ask on a 65 mustang to look at the door tag, (which has the vin, trans, rear ratio, paint) the funny thing is, it says right on the tag "not for title or registration purposes". So you know stupid is as stupid does I guess.
