Title: 68 Radio
Post by: lakeholme on September 02, 2006, 02:21:32 PM
Does anyone have a good picture of an original 68 U63 or U69 (AM or AM/FM) radio?
Would appreciate the help!

Here is a picture of my 68's am/fm. Do you need a picture of the radio that is not installed?         (http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a180/mr396/th_e9.jpg) (http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a180/mr396/e9.jpg)

I have my 69 am/fm original radio out of the car and on the shelf.  If you conclude they are similar, be glad to shoot a couple of pics for you.

No, installed is fine.  Thanks.
If either one of you (or anyone else) could post a picture that is more close up that would help.
I really appreciate it!

That's perfect! Thanks, Ed.  ;D
Thanks guys.  ;D
In case you haven't figured it out. I'm proving a point to a friend.  We've been arguing numbers and descriptions for days, but a picture is worth a thousand words!  ;D

Phil,

You're referring to the tinting of the lens right? The Camaro lens is tinted and the Firebird is clear. Actually, the picture I posted doens't show the tinting very well. It's a bit darker than it looks. The flash washed it out a little...

Ed,

Yes on the tinting, but also the general look...

I've got a friend who thinks his radio is original.  But in several ways it doesn't look right --including the clearer Firebird look.  I think the thing is a very nice repo.  He's going to show it in a couple of weeks.  (It looks and sounds great, so obviously, he does not want to rip it out!) Lucky for him I'm not juding that one!

I'm also on the look for one myself.  (Right now, I've got an obvious repo.)  At that same show, I'm going to stroll the swap and vendor aisles, looking for a bargain.  In my case, it doesn't even matter if it works...

Thanks!

Phil,

I didn't even know they were repoping these things!! How does it look?

And by the way, I'M looking for one also, but don't want to have to sell my first born (and possibly my second born) to get one!!

Who's repopping them?

Ed

I thought the firebird was tinted and the camaro was clear.

This was brought up a few years ago, and Bill Glowacki (CRG member) wrote that the Camaro Lens was tinted and the Firebird Lens was clear. He was referring to a 67 but I belive the 67 and 68 were the same tint. HERE'S THE THREAD (http://www.camaros.org/cgi-bin/webbbs4.33/cuscrg/cuscrg.pl?read=541) regarding this.

I also did a search on Team Camaro and found a few other threads stating the same basic thing, with one regarding a 68. (I can't prove this right now because the forum is coming up "The server is too busy at the moment. Please try again later"!!) However, I was always under the assumption that the Camaro was tinted and the Firebird clear, but since I've never actually seen one in person, I can't say for sure. The only thing I DO know is the P/N for the 68 Camaro AM/FM is 7303241 and the P/N for the 68 Firebird is 7305582.

Hopefully, someone can clearify this for us.

Ed

Looks like the Team Camaro forum is back up so HERE'S THE THREAD (http://www.camaros.net/forums/showthread.php?t=46036&highlight=am%2Ffm+lens) regarding the tinting of the lenses.

By the way, mr396, where are you in So Cal? We might be neighbors! I'm in Murrieta if you know where that is.

That is soo cool,  we are neighbors, I live in Wildomar. Look at this old ebay ad, my am/fm doesn't look like the firebird green tinted one pictured. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1967-67-1968-68-Camaro-Firebird-AM-FM-RADIO-AND-SPEAKER_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ80741QQihZ012QQitemZ220019518759QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW

Mr396, I may be mis-speaking about the radio being a repo.  Ed has me thinking it is a Firebird radio --that looks brand new. (I wonder if you can refinish the face plate, etc and make it look new?)  He doesn't really know where it came from. (There's absolutely no history on his car, and for all we know, a previous owner got it off Ebay. It's one of those cars that looks original, but when you start checking numbers, it's not...)  But now that I have the part numbers, I may offer to help him pull and check it --after he shows it.  If I find out anything worth noting, I'll let you know.

Come to think of it... do radios have the part number on them? Where?

Thanks for the info. Ed!

I'm already looking for parts for a couple of fellows in Charlotte in Sept.  Maybe, I'll luck on to somebody with a truck load of radios who doesn't know what they're worth...  Not counting on that!  ::)  ::)  ::)

Yes there are part numbers on the side of the radio. Delco Model # for 68 Camaro is 7303241.
Delco Model # for 68 Firebird is 7305582.

Phil,

There's also a casting number on the face of the bezel (under the trim plate), but I don't know if the Camaro and Firebird use the same plate or not. The P/N is 7305954, but I don't think the casting number is the same. From some of the pictures I can make out the last 3 numbers of "474" (can't read the first 4 numbers).

mr396, yes, we are neighbors! We'll have to get together some time.

Thanks, Ed.  I can probaly talk him into taking the face plate off even before the show.  At least then, he will know.

Would the tinted glass for Camaro and clear glass for Firebird apply for the AM model also?

Yes, I believe so. Therefore if someone has a 67 or 68 Camaro AM AND a 67 or 68 Firebird AM, you can help.

Well, my part of this little mystery seems solved.  Judging by the clear glass it must be from a Firebird.  Looking closely at the faceplate and knobs, you can see little swirl marks, which I'm guessing came from something like a jewelers cloth.  That would explain how "new" it looks.  (But since we have no history on the car, there's no real way to know.) Can't get good enough detail in a picture to really show the swirls.  He says we'll pull the faceplate after the show.
I appreciate the help.  Now, if I can find anything that looks half that good...

I have several 67 and 68 Camaro AM radios that I can look at but no Firebird. The 68 AM-FM is a hard radio to find. I looked for 10 years before I found one at Pomona and that was several years ago. I'm about an hour away from Murietta.

Marty,

Are the lenses of the 67/68 Camaro AM radios tinted or not? (By the way, I still owe you that Muncie Reverse Rod you asked for!!! Someday I'll get it to you!)

Soooooo, now that I know what to look for.  What do you guys think an AM or AM/FM is worth?  I see them on Ebay, but you can't really tell what shape they are in.  So next week in Charlotte, what should I pay?  I've gotten emails from three others besides myself asking me to look...

Marty, are any of those "several" sitting on a shelf?

Phil,

AM's usually range from less then $20.00 for junk all the way up to $200.00 or more for excellent examples. AM/FM's run from $300.00 for junk, up to greater than $800.00 for excellent examples. It all depends on how much you're willing to pay, and for what kind of condition.

Add me to the list of the millions of folks looking for a 68 AM/FM...

Ed,

Thanks for the "frame of reference" on the radios.

I'm thinking seriously about finding an AM that looks good, even if it doesn't play, for juding purposes.  I understand from a previous post that some of the hideaway radio/CD players are pretty good.  Don't play the radio now that much.  I'd rather listen to the car and the road.

You're on the list...

Thanks Sebastien.  Their prices seem to be right in the middle of the range that Ed provided.  That at least gives me a good starting point.  You guys have been really helpful!  Thanks again!

This is not going to come as a big surprise... But no, I didn't find original radios cheap at Charlotte this weekend.  Although I did find a few misrepresented, thanks to you guys!

As to the question of repo. original radios.  The rep for Antique Automobile Radios said "Not yet, but we're getting there."  These guys are offering an original radio look with brand new "insides".  They are up to about 64 on the repo.  But the ones I saw looked pretty good.  Price is still high --$450 to $700, but considering the price of an quality original, I suppose it's in the ballpark.  Anyway, here's their site:

Would you say Antique Automobile Radio is a better option than Custom Autosound for my Camaro radio?  I saw both on www.vintagecarradio.com (http://www.vintagecarradio.com)  Thanks in advance.

LOL, yes this is an old thread but thought I'd add a few pictures to assist those that do searches. The AM radio is the original from our 68 01B NOR Camaro.
