Curious if anyone has or can post up photos of an original air cleaner lid, hose to the crankcase vent and flame arrestor. Photos of the top side and underside of the lid & base if possible. Thanks, Darrell
-
What year ?
Mike
-
'68 but I didnt think there was a difference on the BB open element air cleaner.. ???
-
I have a '69 big block that was built in Nov. of '68 if that helps. I can take some pics and post when I get a chance.
-
Here's my 68 L89 (396/375 Aluminum head) air cleaner. (Ignore the 427/425 decals. The engine in the car is now - for the most part - an L72, but the air cleaner assembly is - I believe - original to the car)
Also, the air filter is aftermarket (over the counter Fram)

Yes please do post some pics.
Ed,
This is very interesting.. What build date is your L89 car? Also the hose on the base going to the flame arrestor... Is it original as well? Also does anyone know of how many variations of the printing on the underside of the lid? I'm wondering if this is a way to track the lids by year or even months..??..
-
Maybe I should have included open element Z28 cars as well..

My car is a 05D build but the hose is NOT original. I believe there were two versions of the printing, and even differences between "curved" and "straight", but one of the other guys would know more. I'll ask Jerry, John or Troy to comment.

Hey Darrell,
01C X77 - assume it was original since it was on the car in '73 when I bought it, as early as '72 when I first saw it -
Regards,
Steve

Thanks Ed & Steve. I'd like to see an earlier build '68 or a 67 if possible. Also the 4 dimples on the F A I've noticed are not on the reproduction ones. Guessing they were from an assembly process of installing it onto the base.?. Also there is a "GM" stamped on the one I posted. Is this consistent with the others?
-
The NOS ones that I have have the 4 dimples. Probably for installation purposes-
Regards,
Steve
-
Yes, all three of mine have GM stamped on them and 4 dimples.

I was able to climb up on the lift to take pictures of my LOS survivor.
Excuse the "survivor dust" :D and yes...I noticed a critter brought its food on top of the manifold.
I looked at the base of the 67 4B LOS survivor and 5B NOR restored and they are exactly as the one Ed posted (Air cleaner-3)
The hose on the 4B is original and as you can see it has lines and no GM stamp
The 4B base has the smog pipe vent as well
The 5B hose was replaced in the 80's with a NOS and it has the GM and square stamped on it in yellow
The instructions are curved and the verbiage is different than what Ed posted (Air cleaner-4)
Both 4B and 5B lids are black w/white silk screen instructions and both still retain their flame arresters and have dimples. I posted the 5B lid with instructions because that is the most clearer.

Interesting to see a black lid with chrome valve covers. I always thought all lids were chrome on Camaros with open element.?.
Mike did you say your 04B car has the same script as your 05B car? Also is it a black lid also?
Ed is your car LOS?
Ok how about we do this to maybe keep a log.

The 67 L35 had a change toward the end of the model year. If you look in the AIM (UPC L35, sheet A8, item number 1 - Air Cleaner asm), it shows P/N 6483656. However, note 2 shows "was 6424434" on April 6. 1967. The 6483656 utilized a chrome lid (P/N 6421832), but the superceeded 6424434 used a black lid (P/N 6422356). The exact change over date is unknown.
The 67 Camaro with 302 or 396/375, the 68 Camaro with 302 or 396, and the 69 Camaro with 302 or 396 (exc ducted hood) used the 6423907 assembly, and all these have the chrome lid.
My car is a Los Angeles car and the instructions are straight.

Ed,
Thanks for the clarification.
Others out there care to add to the list?

Yes, the 4B is black and has the same curved air cleaner instructions as the 5B. I filled in the blanks below. I have seen a few 67 396 Pace Cars with black lids too.
67 - LOS - 04B - Black - curved print
Interesting what Ed posted about the lid change from black to chrome. My guess is that in 5B they still had inventory to use before going to chrome.
Compiling a list with enough data points though may show when the cutover too effect.
Honestly though, I wish the valve covers were orange instead of chrome. I like the looks better.

Hi there,
I have a 68 NOR L35 4A camaro.
Im assuming my lid would be chrome with the curved font?
Thank you.
-
Not 100% sure just yet. We need more data points from original cars.
-
Here are a few pictures of my '68 01D L35 air cleaner which I believe to be original to the car when I purchased it in 1978. Maybe I have the oddball lid, but mine has two silkscreen instructions!

Just revisiting this post...I see so far not much info for the 69's. I'm beginning to think I purchased a 68 set up.
-
Im taking it that yours is curved print?

Im taking it that yours is curved print?
Yes, it is...for a Holley carb. It was claimed to be for 69 Z28 but I have my doubts...at least from what info is being provided here so far. Aren't there any 69 guys here that can post pics? You would think somebody should still have OEM still. If mine is a confirmed 68 model then someone may need it or would want to do a trade with me for a 69.
-
Im not so sure if this is enough info to be 100% sure. What is the date of your car? If its early build then I could see maybe it having curved print. But if it is an X code car then I would say it would need to be straight. If I had a straight print lid I would trade you. :-\
-
I have an 06A build...653104. That figures...I had my doubts when I first saw it but didn't want to let this one get away because the price was right so I just bought it going by the description. Heck it may even be for 69, just not as late as mine.

My 1967 02B LOS L35 auto has a chrome lid but no screen print, flame arrestor 4 dimple with GM stamp. My car
also has the smog equipment. The lid may be an over the counter replacement. I have a NOS one still in the box
and it looks just like it without screen print also. The part # for the nos one is 6423907
