Title: Radiator cap.
Post by: 69Z28 on July 12, 2013, 03:28:56 PM
Looking at my spare cap today, was this used in 69? The rubber seal is bad as you can see in the pic. Are these rebuildable and who does it? Or can I rebuild it myself? I don't really want it restored to look pretty just rebuilt if possible.

I believe that one looks like mine did.

There is a lot of good info on this thread: http://www.camaros.org/forum/index.php?topic=9373.0 (http://www.camaros.org/forum/index.php?topic=9373.0)

David...I just spoke with Joe Perri in Chicago, he remembers you. He can do my cap without restoring it for $110.00 and have a faster turnaround then restoring it at $150.00 and possibly 4 to 6 weeks out. Really nice gentleman to talk with so if anyone one out there needs one rebuilt or restored he can do both. I wish other people would give us that option. I hate getting stuff restored to put on my survivor car. Just doesn't look right. I have a starter I just want rebuilt but everyone wants to sell me on restoring it, that's BS.

That is great that he gave you an option!  He did an awesome job restoring my cap.   For your car, I agree with you on wanting your survivor parts repaired and not restored.

Hopefully someone can chime in with advice on who does a great job repairing starters.

I've posted before trying to find a rebuilder I can ship it to. Most say rebuild it myself. Not a problem, but I really really want someone to test it and do whatever else is done to make sure it will work and put on a solenoid as well. I can't do that part. No one seems to know anybody. I picked up a Hemmings to go that route, but was hoping someone here or TC would know someone local to trust with a dated component. No luck so far.

if you don't want to clean/repair the starter yourself, there is bound to be a local shop that does automotive electrical repair..  Check your phone book, or google to find 'auto electric'. or automotive electrical or starter/generator repair shops.   These things are very simple to rebuild... and easy to test if you have a battery .. *G*

Gary, people assume that there are shops that do this kind of work everywhere, but that isn't always the case. I've been living in this area of Delaware since 1974 and have yet to find anyone local to rebuild alternators or starters. I guarantee most just trash the old or turn it in as a core at the local Pep Boys or Autozone. Heck the last and only Speed Shop I have ever seen pulled up stakes a few years ago. He was a friend of mine I worked with in our USAF days. He says he wasn't making any money and had to move his business to his home town in Maryland. Spoke to a lot of shops, and there are plenty and I all I get is we don't rebuild them we just replace them. Not worth the trouble on something that old.

This is why I keep bringing it up here. Somebody knows a place where I can get this done, they just haven't seen my request yet to tell me where to send it. Or they just trash theirs and go buy PepBoys or Autozone. I actually bought a starter to use the parts from it to rebuild mine, but since then sold it to a friend that needed one really fast.
