Title: 1969 Z/28 to Rallysport Z/28
Post by: DyRally-Z1986 on June 23, 2013, 02:41:30 PM
I hoping to get some opinions on this. I am purchasing that Z/28 and it is a true X-33 car thanks to you guys confirming it for me. My questions is I really want to make the car into a Rally/Z. How does that affect the value of changing the car into something it wasn't. My Dad had an X-33 Rally/Z so I'm wanting to make it just like his. I plan on keeping the car forever, but in the rare case I would have to sell I would have to disclose that it's not a real Rally sport but yet a Real Z/28. Opinions please...

Simply stated you would be ruining whatever remains of the cars' originality.

Unless you really know what you are doing AND have every OE part needed for the conversion it will be detectable. There is more involved than you may be aware.

So the short answer being unless I did the modification exactly as factory I'm lowering the overall value of the car?

It is your car do what you want and makes you happy. If your only concern is resale value then don't do it. Like the other posters said that unless you do it just like the factory including the sheetmetal modifications such as the correct holes in the firewall and cutouts in the rear panel for the backup lights.

No, would not do it since you asked! Your Dad had a real on so my thinking is a made up one is not the same anyway. I suggest if its that important then find and purchase a real rallysport like your Dad had. Hey, glad you found a Z/28 and no matter what you do enjoy it and have fun just like your Dad did. :)

Mickey my plan was to punch the hole in the firewall, cut out the rear back up lights, and make the RS headlights functional.  I was going to do it all the way to the point the only way you could tell was if I told you. I appreciate your opinions. This is an awesome website and forum. I'm sure I'll have questions along my road to complete restoration. Thanks Guys!

everything that is done to these cars can be undone......

I wouldn't do it especially if it's a numbers car. Yeah you can fix it all back but welding up a hole is more destructive than cutting it out.

It would be easier to start with a real, small block Rally-Sport and add the Z/28 components.   ;)

I would find a real RS Z28 and buy that and leave the non RS alone. I personally think that you will lower the value of the car by cloning it to a RS car. William is correct in saying there is more to converting a non RS to a RS.

In any case welcome to the site. There is an enormous amount of info on the site and very knowledgable good guys on this site.

Simply put, the RS 'stuff' which is required to make the headlamp covers work is a PITA...  :)
Be happy your car has the trim without the headaches..  :)

I think it would affect the value of your true x-33 car quite a lot......for someone looking for a correctly restored Z.

Okay guys. Thanks for the input. I'm gonna think this one over for a while. I'm only 27, I plan to keep the car until I'm physically unable to drive. My Dads car was so sweet being a X-33 Daytona yellow Rally/Z. It was sold to a guy in a south Florida around 1993. But everything I look at pictures it's a sweet memory.

You're very smart to think it over.  At first, on my 69 Z I really wanted a cowl induction hood, even though it didn't have one originally and may have been too early for one.

Now, I'm super happy I restored it back to the way it was.

Nice looking car!
Thanks!

You're going to get a lot of different opinions and it's your car....but for me, when I think about it deep down...make it back to how it was and that's how it should be.  No regrets.
