Does anyone know when the cut off was for the number being cast into the neck portion and the base? Or was this a result of different manufacturers?

That's a damnnn good question. I have one of both. I wonder if it's like the coil bracket for the cowl induction set up. I have one with the notch and one without.

My understanding is that the part with the casting number in the neck is a service replacement. The one on the flange is the production line part. I have read this somewhere but what I read could had been incorrect. Maybe someone else will chime in.

Here are some pics I have found for comparison. Notice that the location of the casting # is in a slightly different location and the service replacement looks too crisp compared to the others..

Guessing that this is another service replacement. Also notice the little bump in the casting of the neck portion versus the orange painted one below

Guessing that is one is a production outlet. No casting bump on neck above #.

I could be completely wrong on this but I am hoping others will chime in with what is on their original cars..

Another comparison here is the outlet off my fathers car. Notice that the #'s are not perfectly in line like the service replacements. Too hard to tell on the orange one in previous post.

I believe you are correct. I checked both my 67 396's (Feb and March 67 assembly) and they are on the flange with a diamond and the letter 'P' in it. I *think* I remember reading the the number changed to the neck in '69.

As with any GM product, there were probably more than one supplier even on small parts like water necks. Note the two flange marked castings attached - two different fonts, two directions to the numbers (one in, one out). I have heard before that the Corvette restorers prefer one over the other - which is which ? Got to have date implications -

My 69 X66 convertible has the "660" on the thermostat neck which I thought was a service replacement. My Z28 has the 660 on the flange but I put I installed that, and my L36 Vette has the 660 on the flange which I installed also. You may be right...different suppliers different casting locations. JohnZ probably knows.

"This is a great debate subject. I have the GM drawing for 3877660, released in 1965, and it says "Cast manufacturer's identification, part number and General Motors trade mark location optional." Three different suppliers made this part over the years it was in use, and each one put the part number in a different place. In NCRS Corvette judging, the pattern that emerged after observing thousands of known-original cars indicates that those used through 1969 had the number on the flange, and those used from late 1969-up had it on the top of the outlet neck. The current reproduction, made by Paragon, has it on the outlet neck. My original 02D '69 Z/28 has it on the flange."

I forgot to add that my 01C X77 has it on the neck - same outlet since I bought the car in '73. Can't say yes or no if it was replaced before '73, but I worked on the car in '72 - same everything when I bought it a year later.
