Title: Garage find 69 camaro?
Post by: jcole541 on June 11, 2013, 07:05:44 PM
This site has been a great help in researching this car.  Now that we own the car we would like you to look at the trim tag and vin stamping.   The car has been sitting for 25 years.  The original transmission and engine were sitting next to it?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  The numbers are vin 124379N506506, the block date code is VC838DZ and G19N506506,
rear end date code is BU0820.  Transmission doesn't have a vin but has the original GM tag 3946798.  The transmission has 3 different stampings, P9T26B 42053 CT9.

Welcome to a great site and glad to have another Cortez Silver Z owner on the board. I'm Gary, nice to meet you. Just so others won't jump on you for the misspelling. CAMARO, not CAMERO. Another Cortez Silver Z. They are popping up all over the place. Do you have any other pics of it yet as is? Would love to see how it looks before you get into it.

From what I can see from the tag, it is the narrow tag, 09B second week of September, pre-X codes. From your VIN it is really early in production so all your components will be 68 dated, probably July, August, September? Some one will most likely confirm that. Your engine suffix V0838DZ has been discussed here I think or on Team Camaro. V for Flint, 08 for August, 38 for the day, but of course august only had 31 days, and DZ is the 302 engine for 69. I wonder who owns the closest date to production start up? I'm wondering if you do. Pretty cool.

Post a picture of the engine stamping. The date doesn't look correct.

The 3946798 transmission is an M21 for a 69 Z28, but there should be a partial VIN stamping on there somewhere. You might want to keep checking. Also, the date code of P9T26B indicates a December 26th build, so it's too late for your car. Are you sure it's a T ?

The BU0820 is a 3.73 12 bolt Posi assembled on August 20th, so that lines up well with the VIN.

Ed,

The engine pad stamping error was discussed here...

The CT9 on the transmission would indicated that it is a service replacement or over-the-parts-counter replacement transmission.

Yes, The original trans would have had no "B" suffix either. Looks like original was replaced very early in life.

Good point, the A, B or C suffix to the assembly stamp only started in October.

Nice Find!  I would like to bring up a point and question to the CRG members.  While scrolling thru the photos, the first interesting thing I noticed was the X3 on the rear seat bulkhead.  Was X33 or x codes in the planning stage for the assembly line this early?  Have other early Z/28's in the September range been observed with these markings?

My 10B Oct 68 Z has the markings on the bulkhead as well. Apparently done from the beginning of production; indicating trim requirements to assembly line personnel before tag was installed.

It's interesting that 67's had callouts on the TT for Fisher and 69's had it on the TT and/or the bulkhead yet 68's have no callouts that I know of. ANYONE else know of any on 68's?
