Title: Suggestions Wanted For 1969 Camaro Custom Paint Design
Post by: sdkar on June 08, 2013, 06:55:59 AM
Hey guys, I am looking for opinions, suggestions, recommendations, you name it, for a paint scheme for my 1969 Camaro Coupe.  It is not original at all and has a 502 big block, TKO-600 transmission, 9" rear, 4-link rear suspension, Custom Martz chassis from frame/suspension, and tons of other aftermarket goodies to make this Camaro ride and drive like a new performance vehicle.

Custom body mods include 69 Trans Am rear spoiler (although I may paint another trunk lid/stock spoiler for easy change back if desired), removed all side marker lights and door locks, and installed a cowl hood.  Since I have installed a Vintage AC system, I no longer need the cowl panel vent grilles...so I swapped out the Camaro cowl panel for one from a 69 Firebird where I will then fill in the grille vent area and the matching indentation on the Camaro hood, thus giving that area of the vehicle a nice and clean look).

Anyway, it is scheduled to go to the paint shop the first week of July.  I have been going over in my head for a long time now, how I want the car to look.  One thing I am sure of is I want  the car to be silver and charcoal metallic.  I have thought of staying with the Z28 stripes, but wonder if this has been played out too many times already.

I have considered something on the idea of the Foose Camaro with a single large center stripe.  The main color either silver or charcoal with the center stripe being the other color.  Here is an example of the Foose design.

http://www.worldcarfans.com/10612225407/exclusive-1969-camaro-by-foose-and-unique-performance

I have also looked at something on the idea of the San Antonio Spurs or Dale Jr. Camaros where the vehicles are two-tone, such as the examples below, but using a charcoal metallic instead of the black.  However, I would want to have a dividing line different from the flame scheme on the Dale Jr. Camaro or the silver streak effect on the Spurs one.  Any ideas on how to divide the two-tone colors using something else.  I was thinking something in a Chevy Bowtie blue color and then match that blue in the seat stitching of the interior.  So, any thoughts here?

http://www.detroitspeed.com/projects/dalejrHRT/dalejrHRT-69-pg1.html

http://spurscamaro.com/

I am at the point I am just to overwhelmed and a fresh set of ideas may be just what I need.  This paintjob is not going to be cheap at all, and will be a top notch show finish.  Thus, I want it to be amazing, and eye-catching.  Not over the top, but not a simple common scheme.  Something that will not look like a fad later on and date the car.  Basically, I am looking for a paint scheme that is timeless and will still hold its own years from now.

So, if anyone has any cool ideas, I am open to any and all suggestions.  I wish there was some sort of photoshop program I could get that would let me load up a blank 69 Camaro and pick and choose colors and stripes and all that cool stuff with the click of a mouse button.  But I do not see where something like this is available.  If anyone knows of something like this, please let me know.

If you do present me with a cool idea and I end up going with it for my paint scheme, I will give you my undying adulation and will also give you full credit on my display sign that I will set next to my Camaro when it goes to car shows.  Plus, if you are ever in the neighborhood, I will be happy to let you take the car for a spin around the block.  I know this may not seem like much, but it would be the least I could offer for a great idea.

As always, thanks for any and all help.  Every suggestion is appreciated.  Thanks.

Steve

Personally, I don't like the 'Foose' stripe design and I am not a fan of two-tone paint jobs.
I like the original style Z stripes and I don't think that they're "played out". IMO, With your color choices they would look great.

Photoshop or any similar image editing program should let you import any photo of a Camaro and then do all the 'color change' and scheme things you want to see.... :)

Re your colors:  Silver and gray....   Have you considered a light silver main paint, fading to the darker color below the belt like break (as foose does a lot).. and then possibly adding the dark charcoal stripes in the light silver above?   The stripes could be the Z stripes, SS stripes, or even the '70 Boss stripe' approach... :)

How about painting it like the Z427 show car from '69 but using your color choices?

I like the dx1 stripes myself and I almost never see them. If you go with the trans am spoiler, you could invert them from about the mid fender line at the back of the front door, and unite them in a bumble bee over the top of the TA spoiler. Hard to imagine, but I am not an artistic type. The end that normally ends in front of the windshield on front would start behind front door and begin the stripe to the rear. Good luck whatever you choose.

How about one that DOES date.the car? Like the endless line stripe design from the 70's, or a motion looking stripe with a stinger hood and the stripe up over the roof?

I have always been a big fan of the Motion paint scheme, especially with the trans am style spoiler. 69 paint scheme not as much as the 70 paint scheme. No two tone top and bottom for me either. Nasty looking.

Clearly different from your everyday stripe scheme. The second gen motion scheme on a first gen would look pretty cool. Maybe leave the single over the roof stripe out of the equation and add the Z stripes but not on the roof. I like the Firebird cowl panel idea. Smooth'er out.

Glad to see the cool 70s are not dead..when a little cob webbing or vreeble were thought radical custom painting..Metalflake paint jobs were popular also. Everybody used Lacquer so painting in the shade was done often by those looking to make your car differnet than the 100s cruising the streets. The custom "Foose " jobs today don't do anything for me...matter of fact I'd be pissed if Chip were to screw up my Camaro with his idea of cool!!  I've been into painting junk on first gens since 1973 when custom painting was in demand.Check out the old car magazines from the 70s and you might just come up with your own idea..Color choice is somewhat  important when planning a custom paint job I beleive...The Motion Phase 3 with spoiler is a cool with a stinger hood. The Z427 with yellow/blk is a neat idea!Love the custom front spoiler!!

Cob webbing...yeah I forgot about that. Do the cob webbing in the Motion paint scheme. What colors are you thinking of? Black with Silver or White stripes and black cob webbing would look outrageous.

So many combos to choose from.......one thing I'd check is to make sure you can get the webbing as it can only be done with one flavor paint...and it ain't real easy to find ! PM me and I might be able to help you.

Cobwebbing can be done with unreduced base shot at low pressure. Alsa makes it too but I never tried it. Concepts within the stripes are endless but make sure you won't get sick of it. Ghost designs can be intricate but don't slam you in the face. Don't care for that Z427 design. Your blue dividing line can be done with turned or airbrush complimented silver leaf shot with blue candy. I have to do art and graphic concepts with drawings and sprayouts for jobs and it's time consuming. Your deadline will arrive very quickly. Find a custom shop that is that will show you samples and the many options. Always liked Mopar graphics as the bodylines on those cars lend themselves well to them. Even the simple qrt panel hockey sticks on the 70 Cuda is effective.

The modern cob webbing from Alsa are limited colors and I think no hugger orange or daytona yellow is avaliable yet ?Maybe somebody will let us know? So many opinions that don't matter at all...decide what you like and do it.Plenty of custom paints for sure TCP Global is a good source..I was painting metalflake when it was all silver..guess what year?

If you're talking about cobwebbing...don't forget about lace. Very popular in the late sixties...especially on vans....Joe

Okay, I have to admit...I am really considering the Baldwin Motion theme.  However, when I google it, I see about 4 different scheme done on the Baldwin Motion Camaro in 68.  Even the ERTL models have three different hoods, some have no spoiler, some have the stock Camaro spoiler and some have the TA wing.  Some have the stripes different on the back, like the back end is dipped in paint and some not.  Also, some have the SS hockey stick stripe on the side and some do not.  Are these the differences in the phases that were offered by Baldwin Motion?  What is the true look, or are all of them okay to copy?

I have the cowl hood, but will buy the stinger hood if need be.  Since I have the rear wing, that can stay.  So, what would be considered the most correct paint scheme of all the ones out there.  I think it would look great with the car a bright silver and the stripes done in a dark silver.  So, that may be how I go.

Title: Re: Suggestions Wanted For 1969 Camaro Custom Paint Design

I see the stinger hood...what hood is this one called and where can I buy it?

http://www.barrett-jackson.com/application/onlinesubmission/lotdetails.aspx?ln=5010.4&aid=443

I see all kinds of different stripes on these cars.  Some with no spoiler, some with the factory spoiler, and some with the TA spoiler.  Also, there is the three hoods I see used.  The cowl hood, the stinger hood, and a hood like posted in the link above.

If I go with this, I want to be as true and accurate as possible.  Were the difference in the phase I, II, or III Baldwin Motion you bought?  What determined what.  I also see some have the SS Hockey Stick stripe and some without.

So, in order to be the most accurate, what is the most acceptable?  Which Wing, which stripes, etcs.  What combination made a Phase  one, two , or three.  Anyway, whoever's idea this is, it looks like he has talked me into it.  i just have to buy the new hood and pick my colors.  Which will be silver and dark silver.  The two colors will be very close in shading, like you see on the Shelby GT40.

Please help me just figure out what is considered truest form.

Thanks guys.  I love that I went with all of yoru suggestions.  It is you guys that are designng my car for me.  I just pay the bill.

Glad I could be of assistance! Motion performance used a few different paint schemes, but the one in the RK Video was the wildest. That was the paint scheme used on the Mexican motion car. You could also follow the stinger stripe over the roof and down the decklid, not out to the side making the back of the car look like a different color. To be totally correct, you will need a set of torq thrusts and vette side pipes .

That is the L-88 hood also used by Joel Rosen. I love the look of the stinger hood. Get one that accepts the hood striker unless you don't mind using hood pins.

Nothing beats the old 69 green Phase III Motion Camaro look and its L88 hood.

The L88 hood is cool but I would stop the stripe on the top and not add it to the front part of the hood. If you google motion camaros and go to images there are a load of pics to see what has been offered. For me, I would stay with the Trans Am spoiler if you do the Motion pain scheme. I think that's what sets off that look.

Technically its not a TA spoiler, it was custom made with 3 legs  on it, and I think it started life as an Olds or Buick spoiler

Since All Motion cars were special built, and customers ordered differnet stuff you could see a varitey of hoods or paint schemes. Not all the Motion cars got fiberglass hoods or radical paint...It was something considered too flashy for a few low key street racers who had performance more than looks on their mind! The only red 68 camaro known was a very plain jane with no spoilers no stripes other than factory and steel SS hood.Just a 427 with minor up grades and you got a Motion camaro that look like all the other 396 cars! The 69 camaro phase 3 stripe is the coolest paint scheme for me and as Mark pointed out the rear spoiler was custom made with 3 stands was used for 69 cars.Motion got really noticed in the 70s and started the pointed side stripes so what ever turns your crank will be just as creative as anything back in the day!

they would build their customer whatever the customer wanted... if it could be bolted or sprayed on *S*

I still have some old car mags from '68 or so, describing/testing the Baldwin Motion Camaro, I still remember reading their 0-60 times and being disbelieving.. :)

As stated, Joel Rosen (aka; Baldwin Motion) would put any aftermarket stuff on your car that was available. And many customers didn't go for the "flashy" striping, many looked like your everyday SS car.  Some were even more of a "sleeper"  427 Biscaynes or Bel Airs.

Okay, the credit goes to whoever posted the RK Camaro.  I like it and that is the scheme I'm going to use.  Thank you.  As for the colors, I am still staying with a Silver/Charcoal combination.  Not sure if the colors are going to be similar in shade, as shown in the pics posted, or a silver and darker charcoal metallic pearl.  I really like the way the darker metallic pearl charcoal looks in the sun, but not sure how it will look against the bright main silver color.

Thanks again for everyone's help.  All who contributed helped pick this color and scheme.

Title: Re: Suggestions Wanted For 1969 Camaro Custom Paint Design
Post by: sdkar on June 16, 2013, 10:07:22 PM
In response to 69Z28...I am going to paint the car the same as the RK Camaro (see video)     http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_CJVmY8ee44.  Which has the back end painted along with the center stripe going up and over the roof and down the stinger hood as well as the SS hockey stick stripes on the side.  I have removed all the emblems, side marker lights, and door locks to try and achieve a cleaner look.  However, I will still install lower rocker moldings, qtr grilles, OEM wheel well moldings, and raindrip moldings.  If I can, I want to see if I can achieve a brushed nickel look on all the chrome, including the bumpers, as I think that would look nice.  I am looking into some techniques on how to do this, so we will see.  The wheels are smoked chrome 5 spoke, so all the colors should go together nicely...I hope.

I posted the silver/charcoal photos to show the two colors I was considering.  Either similar shades as shown in the pics, or possibly a silver/darker pearl metallic charcoal...not sure which.  My painter is going to do a mock paint up of the colors for me to compare, which I think is darn awesome of him.  Luckily, the guy I chose to paint my Camaro is a car guy himself and seems just as excited about this scheme as I am.

I was looking at two tones, and also considering just going with the Z stripes like everyone else has, when I posted my confusion and indecision here for some paint ideas.  Luckily, you guys came up with the Baldwin Motion idea and I have to say...it does look awesome.  It is something very different and very cool.  I have the stinger hood on order and should see it soon.  I hope it fits as well as the cowl hood I installed as the body lines on it are lined up nicely and near perfect and I hope I get the same quality and fitment with the stinger hood.

So again, thanks to all who contributed ideas.

PS:  anyone in south Florida need a nearly new unpainted Camaro cowl hood...cheap...hehe.

I really like the look of your car...I'm going to throw something at ya....how about no bumpers on the car..smooth out the back..no bolt holes, no ridges or bumps..just a smooth back end...for the front also no bumper..no door handles..not even a side mirror..in other words..just the silhouette of a 69...  kinda like the 50's hot rodders(back to the 50's) but with a newer car(69)..just don't chop the roof..if you wanted to go farther..no drip rail..no chrome around the windows..now picture that in your color scheme...just thinking out loud..Scott

Good idea, but for me...the 69 is not quite the car that can easily go without bumpers.  The 67 and 68 have a front end that looks terrific sans bumper.  But the 69 has the indents in the corners and the grille fastening that needs a bumper.  Besides, I want to get the bumpers brushed nickel along with the door handles and other chrome stuff to add to the look of the car.

Also, since everyone here is so darn helpful, I have another question.  What is the opinion on a hood tach with the stinger hood.  Did Baldwin Motion cars get the hood tach and is there a pic anywhere out there that shows what the hood tach would look like on the stinger hood.  Let me know what you guys think.  The car goes to paint jail just after the 4th of July.

Steve, I don't remember ever seeing a stinger hood with a hood tach. It is a fiberglass hood, they used lightweight springs. Not sure the hood would stay up! Glad you are going with the motion look. Retro is in. Everything old is new again.

I always wondered about removing the side marker lights on cars equipped with them. Here in Delaware if they are missing your inspection fails.

On the hood tach, not sure it Motion cars had them or not, but when I had my 69 Judge I thought it was cooler than having the RAM AIR set up. With the hood tach you really never have to look down.

Are you just going for "the look", or some originality?  The Baldwin cars would have had Fiberglass hoods.  Just another consideration.  I consider my '67 a "Day 2" car, so I went with Fiberglass, that is what I (and probably many others) would have done.  In the early years there weren't a lot of guys replacing the flat Hood with a steel Cowl hood.  I went with a Glastek Hood as it was close, and I could pick it up myself.  It fit good and had a nice finish "right out of the box".  I did scuff it and prime it, but it was in good condition.  The guy that was helping me even commented the it was the nicest he had seen.

I went back and forth many times on whether to do the Stinger Hood or the Cowl Hood.  I still "second guess" myself sometimes, but I'm happy with the look I got too.  Maybe I just need 2 cars. LOL!  IF, I did the Stinger, I was just going to put the 'Vette Stinger stripe on the Hood, rest of car would have been more "stock" look, only with the Rear spoiler added.

Motion used the Pontiac hood tach on some cars , Yenko used the Dixco hood tach on the 1970 LT1 Yenko Deuce Nova
the hood tachs look similar and are very light weight. The Dixco was widely used and had verisions sold by Ford and Mopar and as an aftermarket part and there was a repop of it sold by some Mustang vendors

I like the 67 Corvette stinger hood on 67 Camaros and the 68 L88 hood on 68 camaros although either one looks good on a 1st gen

This Corvette Bronze 68 Motion Camaro was built with a tear drop scoop hood then was brought back to Motion for a L88 hood replacement
It is low mile original MP car

I think Buick even used a hood tach on some of the GS X models

Steve, I don't remember ever seeing a stinger hood with a hood tach. It is a fiberglass hood, they used lightweight springs. Not sure the hood would stay up! Glad you are going with the motion look. Retro is in. Everything old is new again.
Hi, look at the car behind mee! :)

I'd call that medium metallic gray, rather than silver...  :)

The photos are not the best as the reflection of the bldg make the paint look dark.  The passenger side may be a better view.  I assure you this is a very bright metallic silver.  The stripes will be a dark charcoal/gray pearl.

In fact here are the color codes.

Main color:  Light Spiral Silver GM WA813K    (2003 - 2013 Corvette)
Stripes:  Dark Graphite Gray Pearl TOY/LEX 1C6

Hey x77-69z28, this is the result of your suggestion.  I was not even thinking Baldwin Motion until you mentioned it.  I'm glad you did.  It is certainly not a common theme, which I am surprised.  And these colors I picked, I assure you, the photos do no give justice.  These colors have a darn good amount of metallic and pearl.  In the sun, they come out and just grab you.  Once it's all done, I will take some really good photos that really show it off and post them.  I feel like a kid on the night before Christmas...I can NOT wait for this to get out of the paint shop and completed.

So, a big thanks to you.  Your suggestion made what would have been just another 69 Camaro into something truly awesome.  THANK YOU!!!  :)

Car looks great, of course I'm partial to silver/black on 69's--- Beautiful lines which IMO are accentuated . Seafrost on 68's. I got the call this week and mines on the trailer ready to drop off tomorrow for paint. Ash Gold---not my favorite , but been on it 45 years ,not the same car without it. Once again , your car looks great!
