Title: John Ware Trans-Am Camaro
Post by: Jon Mello on May 08, 2013, 04:39:52 AM
Here are some recent photos of the original John Ware Camaro that ran in the Trans-Am series at Riverside back in 1970 and 1971.
The car has been running with the SVRA group in the East Coast events for a number of years and the current preparation of the
car reflects that. New owner Karman Cusack is from Colorado and is wanting to restore the car more accurately to how it was back
in the early '70s so that he can run it with the Historic Trans-Am group in the West Coast events. It will be nice to see another first-
gen Camaro running around with that group. This car was a real British Green rally sport Z/28 when bought new and did some drag
racing and slaloming before being turned into a full-time road racer after the first year or so.

Here are some vintage photos of the car, courtesy of John Ryals.  John was a friend of the Ware family, and if I remember correctly,
he went to high school with John Ware, Jr.  John Ryals did some crew work on the car and later opened his own fabrication shop.
He still works on old race cars and fabricates whatever someone might need. His shop is out in Santa Clarita, CA and he has a website
at www.ryalsfab.com .  The two pictures of the car in yellow below were taken at the '71 Riverside Trans-Am.  The other pictures of
the car painted green are from Ontario Motor Speedway in 1970.  That's John Ryals sitting in the car in the last photo.  Karman Cusack's
plan is to restore the car to the dark green 1970 paint scheme.  Many thanks to John Ryals for sharing these vintage pics with us.
Hopefully we'll get to see some more from his collection.

More vintage photos of the John Ware Camaro. These photos were taken at Ontario Motor Speedway, a few weeks before the Riverside Trans-Am in 1970.
Many thanks to John Ryals for sharing these wonderful photos from his collection with us and also to Karman Cusack for working with John on this. More to come.

Post by: kdcrmms on May 17, 2013, 09:38:00 PM
The John Ware Camaro transformation back to 1970 livery has begun. For the Monterey Historics it will be the original British Racing Green as it was delivered new and seen in the 1970 Riverside Pictures.  I am very grateful to all on this site especially Craig Conley, John Ryals and Jon Mello and Chad Raynal for the input I have received in researching the car. There is some lettering on the front spoiler we have yet to identify what it says.
Not only is the body and graphics going back to the way it was in the day but there is a bit of work to do on the Instrument Cluster, Dash and the Engine.  In a way it pains me to freshen up the car with these items because it had such excellent Patina in the orange. I have asked that the transformation be documented so hopefully I will be able to share some pictures.  I continue to look for additional information. Any and all input is welcome.  We want it right.  Did anybody recognize John Ryals in the STP shirt sitting in the car?

Is this a 67 or a 68 - I see a 67 grill but no vent windows?  I can't make it this weekend to Sonoma but will try for Monterey.  Hope to see it there.  Best of luck in your resto.

Rear axle and suspension. I'm not sure why there are red Konis on one side of the car and yellow Konis
on the other but it does make it easier to see which side you are looking at in the photos below. This
rear axle assembly is claimed to be something that was purchased straight from Jim Hall back in the day.

We started the project right after the Mitty.  There is a lot of work to do on both the body and motor I'm hoping to have most of it done.

Is this car being restored at Cobra Automotive?

Yes the car is being done at Cobra Automotive. Curt and his team have done an excellent job in assisting me with the car. They are familar with the HTA and the groups expectations. And have devoted the necessary resources to assure the car is completed by August. They have been flying on the progress.

I visited Cobra Auto two years ago on the way up to the vintage race at Lime Rock. Stopped there and got the 50¢ tour. A lot going on there.

Yes they have done a great job sorting the car for the events we have run. Especially after it was sitting for so long
I have been pleased with their program.

Karman,
I'm curious about the rear fender flares. Were they steel, fiberglass, or a combination? They looked to have stayed in pretty good shape.

Your car is coming along at a good pace, and the work looks excellent. I'm anxious to meet you and see the "green" car in Monterey!

Hi Bob Thank you I am not sure what they were constructed of. I will ask the shop.
They are clipping along for sure.  I've been pleased so far.. Good communication from Curt and his team and great sharing of info to assist them from Jon and others Here.  I have come in contact with several people through this site and look forward to meeting you and the others as well.

Thanks for the followup.

There were pins added after the car's Trans-Am days to keep the doors more securely closed.
These were removed since the car is going back to how it looked during the 1970 season.

More progress seen on Karman's car. New flares being put on to more correctly portray the car as it ran in 1970 with the green color scheme.
The correct 1x4 cowl plenum aircleaner is going back on so the huge hole in the top of the cowl has been filled in preparation for that.

They did a nice job fixing the cut out trunk lock area. I was curious as to what they were going to do there. Are the Minilites going to stay on it?

Yes it's very exciting. I am looking forward to getting this project completed as well. I have emailed some of these progress pictures to Rick Ware and am hoping to hear from him as to what he thinks.
Yes I am having the mini lites coated white so we can leave them on.   I know  it should be the steel wheels but we'll see how it goes.
Won't be long now.

Karman, the Historic Trans-Am group is not going to beat you up over what wheels you have on the car. You could
have the Minilights on there and they can even be natural aluminum color if that is your preference.

Fenders are coming along nicely.  I was talking to the Cobra Automotive folks about your car last week at Fontana! Looking forward to see it at Monterey.

I knew they were out there. They certainly hagve a lot going on. The Shelby Event over the 4th now this week we have the Elkhart Lake Road America Event. Fortunately not all the body guys  make the trip to the races.  Wish the car was done for this event but it's all good. We've waited this long.  Once we get to Monterey it's going to be a busy couple of weeks. Soon after the Cal event  there's LIme Rock and Watkins Glen.  The car should be well sorted by then.

The fender flares truly amaze me at how they beat the living snot out of them with a hammer then smooth it out into a work of art! I have to do the flares on the Mustang I am building and I am not looking forward to it. I practiced on a junk fender and it came out some where between the beat to death picture and the smoothed out picture. Mine won't be as big as these though.

You have no idea how glad I am that you decided to paint it "original" green and not orange. Nothing against its later carnations, but that British green has got to be one of the best looking colors on any Camaro I've ever seen!

Fantastic results and thanks for sharing!

Thanks I appreciate your comments. The color selection of Green seems to be the general consensus.  It was a tough decision since we have more pictures of it orange. I will find out today what the Ware family thinks as I have a call scheduled with Rick this morning.

Yes that is correct it was the std red.  Looks better now for sure. Amazing how responsive this group had been. I would get feedback from Jon and others pass it along, next thing I know they are on it. We didnt have time to cut the hole for the plenum though.

I wish my car went together that quick. You got more done in two months than I have in 3 years!  I am glad I am not paying the bill from Cobra Auto though. I am trying to as much as I can myself. I just bought a 4' finger brake so the project list has expanded! Can't wait to see your car at Lime Rock.

That has been the general feedback from everybody looking in here on the forum. Hat's off to Karman for returning it to it's
original color scheme. The easiest thing to do was leave it as is or repaint it in orange but he bit the bullet and returned it
to its beautiful original green and the result is a simply beautiful car. I can't wait to see it next weekend in person.

Thanks guys  the pre reunion session went well. We had two sessions on Sat. The first session the mirrors were way off and I was almost blind on the left so that wasn't great. The second session was 100 percent better. The car handles completely different but ran great. After session was complete the power steering hose blew and the car filled with smoke got a ride back to the pits on the flat bed.  Challenging race track for sure. We had fun looking forward to next weekend. It was great John Ryals was there and had an opportunity to spend some time with him and his buddy Mark.

I completely agree. The car looks great in it's original colors. Not that there was anything wrong with the Orange. It's just nice to see it restored back in Green.

I have a question about the tires and wheel setup.

Is there any chance you could give me the wheel specs and also the tire specs that you'll be using on the track(type, model, whatever)?

Are the tires going to be the same as the ones in the pictures above?

I did some research and found that finding good track or even hi performance street tires for these old wheel sizes is almost impossible. I'm wondering if I ever use Minilites or Torq-Thrusts if I'' even be able to find a tire for them. So I want to know what the REAL GUYS use on the track in Historic TA. If it's good enough for them, it's good enough for me. They drive those cars as hard today as they did back then, it seems.

Thank you!

The Historic Trans-Am group pony cars are limited to 8" wide rims, 15" in diameter. The cars are using the bias-ply vintage Goodyear Blue
Streaks in the G7 tread pattern. 6.00-15 for the front and 7.00-15 for the rear is the predominant tire combination on the West Coast HTA cars.

The historic TransAm group does there own thing to some degree. In other series like VSCDA it's a bit different.
I am restoring an old ex-IMSA RS car so I've been looking at what is used commonly, and basically there are good tires available for 15" and 13" rims.

Vintage racing is popular enough now that the low-volume tire makers can support the hobby. Sizes however are somewhat limited, so you need to know this as you are building the car.
Hosier makes good 15's, and many of the small displacement cars at Road America Vintage races this year were on Toyo's. For example the Toyo Proxes RR comes in 2 15" rim sizes, 205/50 and 225/50, but that's it.

I hadn't paid much attention to what the TA guys were using, but they were burning them up like they are going out of style :D

Yes, they are. You can find them on Goodyear's website... http://www.racegoodyear.com/tires/sports.html

Roger Kraus at http://rogerkrausracing.com/pages/pricing.html is an independent retailer that sells lots of brand new vintage racing tires. I'm sure there are others who also offer the Goodyears.

Thank you guys very very much for the information. Of the many things in my future, I had planned for at least two things: to keep 15" wheels, and to track my car for fun every so often.

I was rather surprised when I found out just how limited it is to find off-road 15" tires, much less trying to find a variety of them! I thought with all of the wild stuff they have available for vintage muscle cars nowadays, old school racing tires should be a piece of cake.......WRONG.

Them things are actually going out of style, literally. I wouldn't doubt if HTA alone might be the only thing keeping off-road 15" tires in production in the first place!

Don't forget the DOT approved street/race tires like the TOYO Proxes RA 1's.  During the last 15 years, several race cars have passed thru my hands - I did not race them, but others did.

Mostly Datsun 510's, American Sedan Firebirds and Camaros, Player's GM series Camaros, and some others.  On many of them we used those RA 1's - lots of racing miles for the buck.

The Toyo tires Robert mentions are used on newer era cars and are not legal in the Historic Trans-Am Group. My understanding
is the bias-ply Goodyear Blue Streaks (mentioned above in the G7 tread pattern) are the only legal tires in that group. I'm making
an assumption that you don't have a car that raced in the '72-earlier Trans-Am series but are trying to equip your car in the same
manner that the HTA group does for your own personal reasons. If you are using the car for fun track days, there's probably no
reason you couldn't use any tire you saw fit to use including a radial or a pure slick.

Getting back to Karman's car, here are a couple of photos from this weekend at Monterey...

Hi Jon, It handles differently due to the rear end being narrowed. There were spacers in the rear end and had a wider track. It's like a completely different car. Before it seemed like it was on rails and we were using wider rims and tires. It was more forgiving for sure.  All that had to be changed. It's still very drivable and once we get it sorted it will be much better. I'm looking forward to this weekend.

Yes, a Watts Link set-up is legal in HTA and they were used on a number of cars back in the pre-'72 era.

Those are great shots Jon thanks for taking them. Great to meet you as well. The car ran fine although in qualifying we had one of the hood Pin posts come loose and the hood flew up on the drivers side. I spent 3 laps in the hot pit but they secured it and then got it fixed for the next session. We started in the back but I actually think it was better being new to the track and it being a different car. Best time for us was a 1:48.857 in the race. There is still some work to do in getting it sorted and completed but for the most part we had a great time got the checkered and there were no incidents. It was great to meet everybody and share the enthusiasm.

We have decided to move the car out to California for completion. Since most of the events are on the West Coast it only makes sense.  Thanks to the Cobra Automotive Group for all their hard work in getting the car ready for the Historics.  Now we can focus on getting it completed for the 014 season.
The things we want to finish up are the Handling piece, Interior gauges, control box (Don't think I'm going to restore the interior), front spoiler etc. I am glad the car will be kept "local".

Karman, since the car's history was West Coast based originally, it's nice to see you bring it back to its roots. Curt Vogt and Cobra Automotive did do a nice job on the car for you up to this point in time.

Hi Jon, yes they did do a great job for me. I am very grateful to them and they do excellent work.  I agree the Ware's always ran the car in the West so it only makes sense.  I have forwarded quite a bit of information I have gathered over to the people at HTA so they can review and include it on their site as well.  I have recently been in touch with Rick Ware as well and we will be touching base in the near future so he can share additional information and pictures on the car.  Stay Tuned.

IS it me or was this picture taken before any fender/quarter flare work was done? Maybe it's a bad angle or an inexperience eye. Awesome picture of an awesome car. Thanks to all involved in getting this cars story out into public view!

Definitely looks like it was taken before the flares were added, which would explain why the livery changed a little bit such as the removal of the name
from the front fender and the different style of writing for Rex Carson Automotive. Here are a couple more items that were sent to Karman from John
Ryals, although it would seem that they came from the Ware family.
