That helps a little., however, I'm looking at what type of paint were the emblems painted with and if anyone has mastered applying the paint. Looks like a very tedious job to get this done right. What's the best way to strip the paint? How should the chrome be prepped before the paint is applied? I was thinking maybe using the Testors model paint. Years ago when I had my 68 Firebirds I painted the Bird emblem on the gas tank door of one of them and then applied layer after layer of clear acrylic paint and let it sit for a day for each layer to fill in the bird head and wings flush and it came out really nice. Looked like factory. The Z28 emblems I want to do are definately going to be a challenge.

I've reapplied emblem color using the Testors kits before, and the emblems came out very nice... you can 'puddle' the paint inside the lips, and it smoooths out and glazes when it dries. I redid my '69 Corvette 'flag emblems' 15 yrs ago, and they still look great.

I recently ordered a couple of 1/4-ounce jars from Testors, as my emblems were painted by the original owner, and I want to restore them. I chose enamel paint, just because I thought it would (should?) prove durable..... FWIW, I chose code 1103 (red) and 1146 (silver), but may well find these don't match once I start..... especially the silver, 1146 is a metallic and may not be a good match.

I wonder what the GM vender used? Enamel or? Was the paint actually glossy or flat? I've never been close enough to look at a Z28 emblem brand new and never exposed to the elements. My originals look fair for the age and paint looks sprayed on. Masking the Z emblem for spray will be a nightmare.

My experiment back 25 years ago with Testors model enamel looked great at first but it did not hold up to the UV very long. I chipped the paint back off and then left them alone after that. They aren't perfect but they do look original now. YRMV

I have some new GM Z28 and RS emblems, purchased in 1976, still in their boxes.. never used.. if it would be beneficial to photograph them?

Lay them down on top of something really deep dark black, as black as you can find. I bet they will stand out brilliantly.
