Title: PCV question
Post by: 69Z28 on March 11, 2013, 04:59:01 AM
Never hear or read much about these little items, so I thought I would ask.

Just wondering about the PCV's. What can be said about them? Are they all the same? Can you just put any old valve in place of the one that was installed at the factory? I noticed the ones on ebay today, the purple ones for the 69 Z28's, those are repro's but other then the color are they correct?

How about starter solenoids? I'm not even sure I have the original on my starter, number on it is 1114362, which needs a rebuild, but what is being used to replace a bad one? I know you can take them apart and put a new disc in and all that but what about the main body, how do you repair that? Is it possible?

There are at least two different P/N', one for Z/28's & L88's, and the rest of the engine codes.
This is due to the lower spring pressure of the valve due to lower intake vacuum at idle, est 9 inches of vacuum.

I suppose there is no real way of checking the values of the PCV is there? I have several used ones I picked up through the years. As long as the valve sucks in it is working, correct?

How about the purple reproductions...any good? They could very well be a generic brand. I'm assuming there is a replacement on the market. Maybe NAPA?

Maybe I'm all wet but the purple PCV for 69 Z/28's whatever is a falsehood that has been promoted so much many believe it to be correct. The correct PCV back then was a spun valve and not crimped as the later early 70's design. They are hard to find and can be extremely expensive if one knows what they have. I just posted pics of an orig. vs the crimped design due to a recent PCV question in our build thread. Check it out!

if it shakes it works...   cleaning in a solvent or gasoline will 'make them like new'..  :)

Actually, I was think on the lines of vacuum pressure, not the inside mechanics. Yeah, I usually soak them if they get stuck.

I was wondering if someone was able to check a good original PCV for the 69 Z28 with a vacuum set up to see how much it would take to move the valve and then post the info if that is even possible to do. I would try it but don't have an original.

X2 Chick, Your info is 100% correct. I have a 6,000 mile 70 Z28 LTI Engine and it has the spun valve. As noted, very hard to find and also EXPENSIVE.  The Purple Valves are not correct!

Well it turns out that I do have a 'Crimped' CV 746 C PCV, just not a purple one. Those originals from what I have seen ARE expensive if you can find them. On the purple color ones there have been a few post on that color being correct and ones that say it isn't. Heck, even HBC has them advertised as being correct for the 69 302, but those are crimped as well. I believe it was also used on the 70, 72-74 Z28's as well, but who knows for sure. Did AC Delco start making them crimped by the 70's?

Hey guys...I've Googled CV746C AC Delco PCV valve and found all kinds of info about this valve. I'm a little confused with what is supposed to be what a factory installed PCV should be and look like. I was watching one that was on ebay that I got the impression was what the factory installed one looked like and it was not expensive at all. Heck, it had 2 bids and sold for $21.99. Here's the auction, but the pic isn't that clear.

Please tell me I didn't make a mistake and not bid on this? Anyone have a good clean picture of one for a 69 Z28? How do we even know what is correct if there is so much wrong information out there. At the moment I feel like I need to kick my OWN butt for missing out on this opportunity.

According to the 69 AIM that number  #11 6484699 on page 473 under UPC Z28 A5 doesn't come up anywhere when I Google it. Is that number including the hose and clamps and that is why it's not showing up anywhere? Haven't found anything concrete on the OEM CV746C, just what is called over the counter pcv's. I have also seen part #6484525 as well. Can we somehow clear this up? There seems to be quite a bit of confusion out there.

Yes, HBC list them as correct but they also list a few other things that are not correct. Sometime in the early 70's the change was made to the crimped design and sure it had to do with lowering mfg. costs.

Yep, you missed one heck of an opportunity! Did you look at the link I posted earlier showing the design as I think you could easily determine that the ebay PCV was the spun design (especially the bottom section). I cannot recall seeing one go that cheap as they are commonly above $100 and noted one go for around $300. It's also apparent the seller did not know what he had. :)

Crap...I knew it. The one reason I didn't jump on it because there wasn't any bids on it and wasn't sure it was a good PCV. You would think that auction would have had way more than 2 bidders. Oh well, you snooze you loose.
