Title: Vigilite Light Monitoring System Fiber Optic Cable
Post by: Spinal Doc on February 21, 2013, 05:38:03 AM
I am restoring my 1969 Camaro which has an existing Vigilite Light Monitoring System U46 Fiber Optic System.  The car has sat for 20+ years and the rats have eaten the fiber optic cable in the front fenders.  Does anyone know where I can obtain approximately 16 feet of fiber optic cable to restore the system to working order?

Corvettes had them for several years, late 60's, early '70's?    Probably find some at the large Corvette swap meets...

Also Big Fat Buicks/Olds etc. I think Corvette Central or Paragon offer new cables for corvettes repo -

Several years ago, I went to the junkyard and raided some fiber optic cable from some 70's or 80's Cadillacs. The cable used for the rear monitor of the Cadillacs was identical to that used in the  rear monitor of my '68 Camaro. I don't know if any of those Cadillacs exist in the junkyards anymore. The attached photo is of cable I took from the Cadillacs.

I was going to say cadillacs, olds, and buick all used fiberoptic light monitoring systems and the parts should be out there...

Thank you all for your replies.  rszmjt I checked with Corvette Central and Paragon.  They only sell the entire wiring harness that has the fiber optic cable in it.  Corvette Central was nice enough to give me their supplier, Lectric Limited.  I only wish Lectric Limited were as nice.  They would only sell the entire wiring harness and even though they make it up wouldn’t sell me just the fiber optic cable.  They spent more time pulling the harness off the shelf and measuring the size of the cable and the length of the cable contained in the harness then what it would of taken to cut a piece and sell it to me.  I asked for their supplier and they said that was proprietary information and wouldn’t assist me at all.  69pace I did contact The Fiber Optic Store and they have 32 multistrand cable but it was 3.2 millimeter instead of 3mm.  It will work and I purchased some to get the system up and running.  Later I will start my search at swap meets and auto recyclers as the others of you have suggested.

Kelley W King and Hot302 regarding pictures I will get some to you when the car is painted.  The car body is in primer and doesn’t look like much.  I have spoken to another forum member and he informed me that I needed to let you all know that many of the options on the car were added on and that it wasn’t optioned from the factory, like it presently is.  I apologize for any confusion.

Again thank you for all your assistance.  This was my first post.

Respectfully,

Spinal Doc

I have several lengths of that cable laying around. Do you need the larger or smaller diameter cables?

Kurt,

Thank you so much for your offer.  I need the larger cables running from the front fender monitor down to the headlight and running light, on both sides (approximately 3.5 and 4.5 feet respectfully for each fender).  Let me know how much you want for them and I can get the money to you.  My cell number is (520) 366-6833.

Again thank you.

Spinal Doc,

Did the Fiber Optic store cable work?  I have a 69 RS that was just painted and body shop took out all of my cable and disposed of it.  I'd like to get the system working again, but also need to find the right cable.

ssg56,

So sorry to hear of the incompetence of your body shop.  They must be related and close family members of my body shop.  So hard to find the right people to restore our treasures.  My car was supposed to be delivered on 3/15/13 and still isn't done.

Yes the cable works for the larger diameter cable for the front fiber optics.  My rear fiber optics, the smaller diameter, was intact so I didn't do any search for it.  The contact information for the fiber optics is:  Fiber Optic Products, Inc.  P. O. Box 779   Clearlake Oaks, CA  95423  (707) 998-3903

Try contacting KurtS, coordinator, above and maybe he will be willing to assist you.  He apparently has the correct cable and is willing to part with it.  He didn't contact me back and I didn't pursue it.  Have a great day.

Spinal Doc,

Thanks for the info and I hope yours comes back intact soon.   It's very frustrating to wait so long but hopefully that means they are taking the time to do the job right (or at least better than mine!)

Best,

ssg56,

Yes very frustrating.  Fired the bodyman/painter today and have lined up another one who is going to strip down the car and start over.  I know it will be worth it but really don't want to wait the extra time.  I keep telling myself that when I am actually driving the Z it won't matter but it surely matters now..  As I promised above I will post pictures of the finished job.

I hope that KurtS comes through for you.  The people on this forum seem very willing to assist.

Sorry, totally my fault. I'm on a limited time schedule lately and some things fall thru the cracks... :(

Spinal Doc,

Sorry to hear, suffice it to say I know how you feel (spent the whole weekend tracking down electrical gremlins caused by the body shop failing to put the car back together properly).

The only positive thing I can say at this point is that the paint and body work does look good.  But, I won't trust these guys to take apart my '68 when it needs to be painted.

Hope the new body shop works out and I'll contact KurtS.

Thanks again,
ssg56

UGH!!! After I bought my '71 Camaro back in '71, I swore I was going to install a Corvette Generation C3 Fiber Optic Monitoring System in it.  Come now 2017 and I am still fascinated by it [Chevy dropped it off the 'Vette in early '73] , I still have this one part remaining...

Spinal doc do you have a window sticker or a car shipper showing all of your options or is that just your listing?
