Title: 67 spoiler question
Post by: bobvickers on August 07, 2006, 08:59:23 PM
In our quest to restore our 67 SS-350 we are unable to verify whether this car is supposed to have a rear spoiler or not. There was one on the car when we received it however along with the other things we found wrong we wonder about the spoiler.

Does it belong on this car or not?

Thanks in advance

Bob

No. Spoilers were not available on a 67.

Is it possible that it was dealer installed?

Thanks again

Bob

Hello everyone!
New to this board. On the question about 1967 spoilers, what exactly do you mean when you say they weren't 'available', yet could be 'dealer installed'?
Thanks!

They were never factory-installed on 67's in production, but many were installed by dealers or owners in later years with over-the-counter-purchased GM spoilers.

The 67 trunk lid wasn't designed for a spoiler.  When the 68 came out, provision had been made in the design for one.

Who would want a Camaro without one?

Me, three!  Originality...  ;D  ;D  ;D

Hang in there, Bob, on restoring your car.  Before it is all over I will have spent almost as much correcting what the previous owner "modified" than I paid for the car.  But that's a big part of restoration and originality now.

Me, four. Spoilers on 67 Camaros....ugh.

The spoiler provisions/holes started showing up on the later 67 deck lids. There were at least 3 different decklid designs during the 1967 model year. Kurt??

Learn something new every day!  So, when did the lid first change on 67?  And according to JohnZ's answer was that just for dealer installed?   ???

Even though spoilers were not available as an RPO (regular production order) on 1967 Camaros, they were certainly installed--and a lot earlier than many people think.

Here's a photo taken October 1967 of the 67Z prototype car. Photo appeared in Feb 1967 issue of Hot Rod magazine:

Invoice dated Jan 26/67 for a Gorries Chevrolet "Black Panther" Z28, calling for "spoiler":

Early calendar year 67 ad for Yenko Chevrolet Super Camaro, offering "Fiberglas rear deck with spoiler":

Another ad from Yenko, this time showing a rear photo of their 1967 Z28 "Stormer", complete with rear spoiler:

So, to answer the original poster's question, it's possible your spoiler was dealer installed, but not probable. The above are exceptions to the rule.

The original question was whether his 1967 Camaro is suppose to have a rear spoiler and the answer is no. The fact still remains that no 1967 Camaro left the factory with a rear spoiler.
