Title: original transverse muffler date codes?
Post by: BULLITT65 on January 06, 2013, 02:04:17 AM
Hey guys wondering if anyone out there has an original transverse muffler on their car or in their inventory and if they date stamped the mufflers? Anyone have any insight on this one? Did they stamp a part number and date on the resonators as well?

An interesting question, Austin, but I'd doubt that the mufflers themselves would have a PN on them, given how they are built and what they are made of.   I bought replacements in the mid 70's, and I recall them having a wired on tag or stuck on paper label with the PN...   There are 'raised' letters on the mufflers...  but I'm not recalling the letter on mine.   A single letter..  like 'A' or 'E' or ??

Well I have seen a few that guys have claimed are originals, one of them had a stamping of 6 1 222 2 A
I am not sure if that is some sort of a date or batch number. I am hoping some other guys may have an original that they can take a look and post a picture or any stamp.

Have the original exhaust off my 68 Z in the attic ( was only on the car a few weeks) I'll look for codes this weekend and post numbers if I can sort out how to download pics, not letting me via using browse.

pics are pretty easy to do here, but  you have to realize no single image can be larger than 150 kb, and the totaly cannot be more than like 400 kb?   4 image limit I think but they would have to avg less than100 kb to do 4...

Walker was one of the suppliers.  Not sure if there is a date code, but I think the Walker mufflers have a "W" embossed on the side.

This pic is of an NOS muffler I sold a few years ago.

I can't say about the factory installed muffler, but the one I bought over the counter at the local Chevy dealer in 1976 has a 'W' on the side.

Here are some pics of my exhaust ,original 1968 road grime on it. Couldn't find any numbers which jumped out at me ,going to clean up this week and see what I find.FYI per #1 owner ,exhaust was on for a short time due to the installation of headers. Claimed he ordered them and came in trunk. Numbers don't come up Stahls ( I even called) however I believe they were through the dealer as was the Sun tach which they installed. He also told me they would not install the headers ,he did. He just got rid of the air pump a few years ago (I have the exhaust manifolds) and said he wished he ran me down sooner. Probably on CHP shelves ! It was nice to get the whole story ( ordered  while in Vietnam) anyway I'm rambling and will check for those #'s later this week.

Cleaned the undercoat off ( yea still on it ) and found the W pass side rear but no #S, didn't have my glasses on. It'll get the lacquer thinner wipe down this weekend ,see what I find.

OK..  I checked again.   The 69 Camaro transverse muffler I bought from the dealership in '76 for my Z28 has a 'W' on it.   The Resonators also bought around the same time, have an 'A' on them.  See photo attached (since these parts are off the car currently).

"W" = Walker, "A"= Arvin

I don't have the Camaro muffler drawings, but Corvette muffler drawings all show date codes embossed ONLY on Service parts, not on production-line parts.

I have a NOS muffler on my 69 Z28, very old/old issue, bought it about 16 yrs ago, and it was in a very deteriated old GM box. It has 2 V type notches with square bottom at the end of the V notces on the inlets where the over the axle pipes go into the muffler, I have seen these before on other GM cars/corvettes to correctly locate the pipes at the rite angle? I have 2 other NOS mufflers and they dont have the notches. I dont know whats original , but pretty sure they ALL have the "W". I will check them all for other numbers and repost this info.

My 69 Z28 muffler has only a "W" on it with no other letters or numbers. The V notches are exactly the same, they were not cut. The GM Box was very badly deteriated when I got it late 90,s, so I dont have a part number, but it was identical in size/shape to the walker aftermarket muffler the car had on it since about 84?
 1 of the other NOS mufflers also has the "W" with no other letters or numbers at all, it is in a GM box with part number # 3981951 on the box as well as the box is dated 9-22-70. It has the small slits in the inlet tubes as previously posted . GM parts book says this is a 67/68 muffler, my book shows 69 as  #3961396 which supercedes to #3981951. The other NOS muffler is buried in a shelf of parts, cant get at it rite now. The posted pictures are of the muffler on my car.
Hope this Helps.
