Title: Does this 67 undercarriage look unrestored?
Post by: DavidS on November 27, 2012, 02:26:25 PM
A friend of mine has a 1967 396 SS.  I believe he has had it for about 20 years.

The exhaust was replaced with a Gardner.

Does the undercarriage/body of the car look unrestored?

Here are two youtube videos.  I have more if needed.

Looks unrestored to me. I noticed the springs have the paint mark and no decals. The paint mark looks yellow like my 67 L35 4B LOS springs.

Thanks Mike!  It is a LOS car.  It has a lot of gray and black on the underbody similar to my NOR 69Z.

For anyone that does not like to look at videos, here are some pics.

I'd say definitely unrestored and from a non-rustbelt state....

Curious:  Why do you ask?

The straps are correct for a TH400. I have them too on my 67 4B w/TH400.

I noticed the motor still has the old style engine mounts as well.
And the gas tank also looks like it is black which is correct for a LOS 67.

In 1992 it was shipped from San Dimas, CA to Granby, CT.

I have a numbers matching 1969 Z that is being restored.  The underbody has not been painted yet.  I would like to bring it to the Camaro Nationals next year.  Before starting the restoration, my car had loads of gray primer with some black areas.  I believe to restore it the way it was originally, I should put back the gray primer.  However, to do well with a judged car, it should be uniform 30% gloss black.

I have seen many original cars on this site that had a lot of black with some gray on the underbody.  However, there are other original cars that have a lot of gray with some black on the underbody.  I have been reading old Camaro Enthusiast magazines and there are low milage original cars there that have primarily gray underbodies.  I believe that since the underbodies were primered with the gray primer by hand, there are huge variations in what was done originally.

Part of me was hoping that everyone would have mostly black and my car was a weird fluke with the gray.  Then, I would just have it painted 30% gloss black.  As it stands right now, I'm not quite sure what to do.

David, if you have pics of your car before and have worked to duplicate what you had one would think it would be a non issue. We all know there were lots of variation so put it back to what it was and don't look back.

Is the car red or originally red?
It appears to still have overspray on the floorpan in the direction that it would have been applied to the rocker panels.

Yes, my friends 1967 396 SS is red.  It has never been repainted.

You are right Chick.  It's a little tough because the the underside might end up looking like a big mess between the gray primer, the black, and the green overspray.  But, if that's how they were, then I'll probably go in that direction.

Wonder why the straps are on 400 turbo cars. We never stop learning

Also, I thought BB axle torque-arms were supposed to be square and not round tubing..

The TH400 usage didn't get a square bar.

David,

My original, unrestored '69 Z28 (NOR) from 09C also has areas of gray, black, and even some outer body overspray on the low hanging areas.   the highest areas under the body generally are gray (ie. didn't get the black as much)...  the lowest areas hanging down got touched on the sides by orange *my outer body color*....  I just cleaned it up and left it as is..  although there are spots I'd like to convert the rust, I'm going to leave it as is until it's judged at least once...

Yes, I have some photos - too high resolution for posting here....  I can reduce the resolution, but not sure the required detail will show up?  Or maybe I can move them to photo bucket and post the addys here?   Give me a few days and I'll do one or both...  unless you have another suggestion..

Gary,

I think the Photobucket method would work out A-OK.

Thanks!
David

That looks like my 67 LOS engine bay!
I see it still has the original battery hold down bracket (dimples).
One thing I see though that doesn't look right is the clip that is mounted on the right front head. That looks to belong on the left rear side head fto secure the oil gauge line or oil pressure switch wire. The fuel line looks replaced.
