Title: Temp sensor
Post by: L78 steve on November 21, 2012, 06:54:22 PM
What is the correct coolant temp sensor for 69 Camaro V-8 w/o gauge package. Pin or spade connector? Pictures? Thanks, Steve.

Read THIS (http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php/topics/458556/69_BBC_Temp_switch) Steve. (the CORRECT one is pictured in the post dated 08/26/11 at 10:39PM and also in the post two under that dated 08/26/11 at 11:11PM, both by ssl78 - John Platania.)

Ed something is wrong. Neither times have a corresponding thread entry.  Mine is not like any of these either. My wiring harness is equipped for a spade type but has a big head on it like a rivet. The wire clips down over it. The end on the wiring harness has a slot for it to slide up in to.

Daniel

If you do a search for "temp sensor" there are several hits.  I didn't review each for relevance but there may be some help in one of the threads.

I'm not sure why you can't find the posts I'm referring to, but here's a picture of the correct one without gauges.

I don't know but the last post is dated 8/26/11 but it's 9:26 PM and that's it. No 10 or 11 o'clock post.  Does the end of the wiring harness have a rubber nipple over the end of it to slip up on the sender not just a single wire to plug up to the pin?
Title: Re: Temp sensor
Post by: bertfam on November 22, 2012, 01:05:43 AM
Ok, I think I know why you guys can't find it. The date and time is dependant on where you live! I live on the west coast, so those times I posted are for Pacific Standard time. Add or subtract the correct amount of hours for where you live and you should be okay.

As for the wire, yes, there's a rubber (? - could be a soft plastic??) cover with the metal connector inside it that attaches to the sender.

Nope... that is oil pressure. The temp wire is in a different harness.

Yep, you're right. Sorry about that. The Generator and forward lamp harness is the one with the temp sender wire (P/N CA97541).

I'm not trying to be argumentative or anything like that but my wiring harness has a split type connector and it wouldn't work on this pin type sender. Mine has that short pin with a head on the end of it. This is just a picture I picked up off the net but the end is like mine.

If someone who knows how to put pics on here will send me their email address I will email a pic of the correct end on the wiring harness for a 69 Camaro temp. sender without gauges. I have an original harness from one of the ZL-1's that was ordered without gauges.

Pics sent. After removing the white plastic sleeve I can tell this end has been repaired. It looks like it was recrimped so I don't know for sure it is the original end, but it is for a round post type temp sender. Hope this helps.

My 68 without gauges has that kind of end and button on the sensor.  Where can you get the end that goes over the connector that has the slot in it?

I'm not sure about just the end but my whole harness came from American Auto Wire and it was the Factory Fit type. It's supposed to be identical to factory but my original harness was cut and spliced on this wire so I didn't know this was incorrect until this came up.

The rivet style pin on the sender is for the gauge not the light. I believe the straight pin style is correct but not sure. Someone must have the correct set up on there car. I need a pic. of the boot and sender.

"Straight pin" with no head on it is original and difficult to find.  The "nail head" is what the commonly available service replacement sensors have looked like for years.  That is why all the harnesses have been "modified" with spade clips added over the past 40 years or so.

Looking at their web site, it doesn't appear they have non-gauge senders available for the 1969 V8 cars. Only the 1968 V8 cars (P/N 01993426) with the following note:

Quote
TEMPERATURE SENDING UNIT, 6 Cyl., with warning lights (1/2 x 14 P.T.F.) Note: Requires a 56 series female connection

For "Idiot" light it is listed under switch not a sender...
From LectricLimited catalog for a 1969 Camaro....model numbers match the picture posted by Jim
Part - description
01993426-TEMPERATURE SENDING UNIT, 6 Cyl., with warning lights (1/2 x 14 P.T.F.) Note: Requires a 56 series female connection
Warning lights use the 56 series connector...

01513462-TEMPERATURE SENDING UNIT, with factory gauges (correct resistance and connection, produces accurate gauge display)
Uses the single pin.

I have seen guys convert and use the same temp lead and just change the connector.

Only the 01513462 matches the picture and that's for cars WITH gauges as I noted above. The 1968 V8 without gauges part number (1993426) isn't shown in their catalog, nor is the 1969 V8 without gauges part number (1993369). However, Heartbeat City shows the 1969 V8 without gauges (part number 1993369 (http://www.heartbeatcitycamaro.com/store/product/13610/Temp-sender-w-o-gauges-slider/)) with the same basic note, but additionally

Originally these senders had the pin style connector, however, currently they are only available with the slider style connector.

My 69 original Z without gauges also has the 321 style. I don't think it has ever been changed, the lead wire going to the connector still has the felt fabric sleeve on it.

Can anyone else confiirm that a 69 Z without gauges uses the 321 style requiring the female spade terminal with the slotted cover?

If so, have the correct terminal, correct sender, but need to know where I can find the correct slotted terminal cover.  Guess I can make one if I have to out of a "regular" cover.

Lynn I saw a thread the other day where somebody found just a pig tail with the correct end on it. It was long enough you could splice up high enough to hide it in the wiring loom. In the mean time I search and you can too so maybe one of us will find it.

Post by: lynnbilodeau on February 02, 2013, 01:47:40 AM
Daniel:

Yes you can buy the pig tails.  However, since I already have a bag of 56 series terminals and I need two of the slotted connectors (the one for my key buzzer wire is mia and it is the same slotted connector) I found those, and am buying 10.  If you need one, i will mail it to you.

Also, I am buying 10 feet of the heat insulation.  Should be enough to do 3 cars.  Anyone need that, let me know.

This car that doesn't have console gauges, (I am curious since mine doesn't either) what other factory options did it come with ? If you don't have any paperwork with it and are not sure thats ok. I do have the paper work for mine and since mine is a 08C of 1969 car it had the factory Tach and center fuel gauge as well as the spoiler package standard. The original owner special ordered it with the ZL-2 hood, tinted windows, AM radio, and basic interior decor group which had the stainless trim around the pedals and wood grin on the dash. He also specified the M-21.

I know a lot of guys who restore these cars automatically put the cowl hood on and console gauges, it sounded like you are trying to keep it stock, so thats why I asked. Thank you

Post by: lynnbilodeau on February 02, 2013, 05:32:43 AM
I am guessing you are asking me.
Yes, my car came with tach and center fuel gauge.  No console.  Also had bright trim around pedals and standard black interior.
Also has tinted windows and is for sure a ducted hood car from the factory.
Manual steering (although I had power steering on it last time I drove it).  But still have the original box.

I THINK but don't know for sure that the only rosewood was the on the bottom of the gauge cluster at headlight, wiper switches and radio controls.

No paperwork.

Very cool, sounds very similar to mine. I am guessing it is a X-77 car. What color is the exterior? What condition was it in when you got it?post a pic if you have one please.
I don't want to hijack your thread, you can PM me the info if you want. TY

Don't mind a bit.

X77 car.

10 10 paint

Standard black interior.

Radio was mia, so not sure what it had.  Probably AM only, but I am putting an AM/FM (not stereo) in it.  In fact, I just installed it yesterday.

Car was a week away from heading to the Fairgounds dirt track to be a "late model" roundy rounder when my brother talked the guy out of it in 1975.  He was only 15, in way over his head and very discouraged less then a year later.  So... I swapped him the Opel version of a muscle car, a 1970 Opel Ralley (mini-brute if you are old enough to remember the commercials).

He got the better end of the deal by 1976 standards perhaps.  In the long run, I have no regrets.

First pic is when he drug it home with the engine out.  Ducted hood and rear spoiler are already mia.   I do know it was a ducted hood car.  Had the correct throttle rod, had the hole above the fuse block for the extra harness, and I know who stole the air cleaner assy out of the trunk and sold it for $20!
I will post a second pic in the next post (file size issues) It is the mini brute I traded for it.

He totaled the Opel a few months later, so I probably saved the black Z from the crusher.

Ok I understand the trade of the Opel for the Camaro, BUT you didn't mention the boat! that changes everything! I'll have to rethink that deal.

Seriously though what does the Camaro look like now?

Never mind the Camaro, WHAT DOES THE BOAT LOOK LIKE NOW?????? (sorry couldn't resist)
Title: Re: Temp sensor
Post by: lynnbilodeau on February 05, 2013, 01:00:38 AM
Boat is long gone.  The boat was his first one (has probably bought a hundred since, or if he hasn't then there are at least a hundred between him and one of my other brothers), so it wasn't part of the deal.

As for what the Camaro looks like right now... well, you do know that on another thread I was getting info to cut the shifter hole in the correct place, and aksing about carpet underlayment placement, so... it is under construction.  Got the hole cut yesterday.  Car now has the gauge cluster, speedo cable, dash, firewall pad, heater set up, headliner, side glass and weatherstrip installed.   Probably a few other things done, but moving slowly.

Most of the paint is done.  Most of my pics are way too big to post.  Here is one pic of the hood showing my wife's reflection.  I painted it with black lacquer (yes, I know, I am nuts).  Mind you, this paint has not yet been cut and buffed, so the orange peel is probably coming out.   I have debated whether to leave the orange peel and just have it buffed.
Still pretty glossy for unbuffed lacquer.  Right now the hood is in the guest bedroom along with a few hundred other parts.

I have posted a few pics of other parts over on the Yenko site.

Back on topic.  I have an original sensor (no gauges) and have replaced the green wire in the harness.  Replaced the whole wire as I don't like connectios buried in the harness.  Left it a little long on purpose.  I also have the correct terminal and connector, but haven't attached them yet, nor have I installed the heat sleeve.

Two questions:
1. I have the green wire exiting the harness at the correct place.  How long is the wire from the harness to the connector?
2.  How much of that wire is covered in the heat sleeve? or put another way, how long is the original heat sleeve?  Seems I remember it covering almost the entire wire once the wire "leaves" the main harness.

Thanks for all the help, especially from you guys with original cars.

Don't apologize.  I just appreciate any help.  BTW, your dimensions helped me get my shifter hole cut finally.

And... how long is the wire from the main harness to the terminal.  I am guessing about 22 to 24 inches.

Lynn, I have a 68 but here is what I have.  About 12" of mine sticks out of the cloth covered part at the junction in the harness.  It is a little short but all I had to go on was the picture in the AIM when I re-wrapped the harness.  Obviously more of the cloth is under the harness so I can't tell you how long the cloth part is but it is longer than the 12".

You can release the pin from the connector with a micro flat bladed screwdriver about .050 wide and .025 thick.

THIS WILL/SHOULD REQUIRE NO EFFORT!!
IF THE WIRE AND TERMINAL DO NOT SLIDE OUT EASILY YOU HAVE NOT RELEASED THE TERMINAL FROM THE PLASTIC CONNECTOR

A bobby pin (hair pin) works well if you pull the plastic coating off it.

This is for removal of PLASTIC CONNECTORS which have FEMALE BLADE receivers.

With the connector mates unplugged -
1.Take the wire from the rear and push it and thus the brass terminal end forward in the plastic connector,
2.Slide the screwdriver down the front of the plastic connector, there is a groove which the micro screw driver will slide into, in turn releasing the female side blade terminal.
3. With screwdriver still in slide the terminal and wire out the back. Males sides are a different procedure.

As noted the reproduction temp sending unit plug is correct however the plastic connector is black VS white.
