Looking for the 5/16 bolt for 69 Z28 neg battery cable side terminal. Someone replaced the bolt in mine with the 3/8 bolt for newer batteries. I have a Y 77 battery in mine. Can't find the right bolt.
-
Danny,
Curious - does it look similar to this ? This cable was in my '69 L78 when I got it home - I've always wondered if it was an original (to the car) cable - it is a GM, no doubt -

Steve

The bolt head looks correct but I can't tell what size bolt that is. I need a 5/16 thread bolt.
-
Danny, did you ever find out if the Corvette used the same bolts? I posted over on TC, but you never replied.

I looked in my battery book and yes Corvette did have the 5/16 neg connector. From what I see anything that used a Y77, Y79, Y87, or R79 battery they had the 5/16 neg.

Did you see my link on TC? Corvette Central has the bolts by themselves.

Yes but I called and those are 3/8

Well, in that case you might want to CONTACT M&H (http://www.wiringharness.com/contactus.htm). I believe they're reproducing the cables, so they may have a lead on where you can get the bolts.

Might try these guys to. http://www.lectriclimited.com/
Or you might look at AMK http://amkproducts.com/default.htm

Danny,
The cable I have is a 5/16 hex X 5/16 bolt, as far as I can tell. Part number as embossed on the side of the cable is 8901871PV, which does not show in my '73 parts book, nor is it still valid with GM as a current number. This cable was attached to the radiator support of my 12A(1968) '69 L78 when I brought it home. Since I can't verify the number, I can't be sure that it is an original (to the car) cable - any other learned opinions out there ?

I've called all the above mentioned places and they all use 3/8 thread bolts in the reproduction cables since that's the way new batteries are.
-
Danny - if you need this cable let me know - I won't be using it in all likelihood since I can't be sure of the number for my application -

Where did you get your cables? My new ones came with the correct 5/16 and the 3/8 like they were supposed to. Maybe get some new cables since you are having a hard time finding the bolt.

So you say your cables have different size threads on the bolts? Every place I called said the reproduction cables they sell have 3/8 threads and the bolt head is the only difference in size between neg and pos. The cables were on my car when I bought it.
-
Yes they do Danny cause one guy almost ruined my battery trying to put the wrong bolt in the wrong hole. He ruined the first 3 or 4 threads with the 5/16 when he tried to tightened it. Pulled them right out. I was lucky as my disconnect had a longer bolt that went deep enough to catch the threads that were left deep in the hole.

Thanks I appreciate it but the bolt looks a little rough.
-
Danny,
15 seconds in the Harbor Freight bead blast cabinet. I suppose it looks a little rough, but it ought to look dandy after replating. Note the bolt size is identical to the hex size.
Shame they don't make these anymore -

I called them and they get their cables from Factory Fit. I have talked to Factory Fit and they I formed me they use the
3/8 bolt in their cables.
-
I don't know Danny. It's been over 2 years ago when I bought mine. Maybe they changed.

I ended up rethreading my 3/8 bolt down to 5/16. Works like a charm.
