Title: Urethane Repair Product for VE3 Special Front Bumper
Post by: ZLP955 on October 10, 2012, 07:59:38 AM
Can anyone recommend a product to repair a VE3 Special Front Bumper (often referred to as Endura Bumper)?
In researching this, came across a recommendation for 3M Automix 5887 Plastic Repair, which is a 2-part epoxy product, but the TDS states it is for use on plastic parts (such as modern bumper covers and other plastic trim parts).
Any help or advice much appreciated.

See the post(s) in General Discussion "Reproduction Endura bumpers are horrible" - unfortunately, GM discontinued the repair kits you will see pics posted of, but there is a guy out there doing repair work that looks to be a really decent deal.
I have a VE3, my original to the X77 I bought in '73, that needs help like I suppose most of them do - car was jacked up using the correct bumper jack/bracket (which is still in the car), but the bracket didn't keep the bumper from really getting messed up after it was jacked up a time or two. I love the design and appearance of the Hypalons, but they have been a problem as long as I have been around them to maintain/protect. Two weeks after a fresh repaint on the car in 1975, a Volkswagen rolled back into my Z and cracked the paint on the bumper. Talk about road rage -

Yep, I saw that thread, and have previously seen how bad the repro bumpers fit.
Unfortunately, based on my location, it's too costly to ship my VE3 back to the States for restoration, so I am quite prepared to do it myself. But because of the time it will take me, I'd really like to hear first from someone who has already done this, so I know I'm using a suitable product for the repairs. Failing that, I'll take my chances with the 3M Automix, and let you guys know via this forum how it works out!

5887 works great, I have used it to repair Endura's
I use and recommend Spies Hecker 3300 Elastic Primer w/ 3100 catalyst.
It was demonstrated by priming a blown up beach ball then allowed to fully cure and deflated... no cracking peeling etc even a year later...

As a precaution against cracking I use a flex agent in the top coat (clear or Single stage), not needed in the base coat.
