Title: 1969 Z/28 Original Glass Questions
Post by: doomer on September 19, 2012, 06:58:42 PM
Who would have thought a little rock could start so much research?

I took a rock into my windshield recently, and started checking into replacing the glass. Of course, the glass does not appear original. It is 1971 date coded replacement PPG glass. It reads:

        DUPLATE
PPG LAMINATED
     SAFETY FLOAT
    AS1 M25 25 101
           DOT 18

My other glass does not appear to have markings, except one side window, which says:

           SOFT-RAY
SAFETY  L   FLOW-LITE
               O
AS-2           F          TV
      SOLID TEMPERED
          DOT 15 M75

The problem is that the rear side glass is dated TV (AUG 1969). My car is an 04C car! I'm beginning to think that no glass is original. I've not noticed the mix of tinted and clear until now. I thought that non-A/C cars shipped with clear glass. However, isn't tinted glass an option that a Z/28 may have had?

Since clear glass is much more expensive than tinted, should I just begin the process of going all tinted by replacing the windshield with tinted glass?

Thoughts?

D

Interesting enough, I have found the markings on my other windows. All glass is PPG except one (drivers rear side window) which is tinted LOF. So I am going to stick to the original clear glass.

Does anyone here have original PPG untinted front glass in a 69? I'd love to see a picture of the date code/markings. CRGs gallery does not have a photo sample of this type.

Bummer about your windshield. Yes tinted glass was an option on the Z/28. You had 3 choices: None of it tinted, all of it tinted, or you could have just ordered the windshield tinted. Since it seems most of your glass has been replaced, unless you have some original paperwork it may be tough to figure out what was original to your car. I am unaware if one is more than the other as far as replacement costs are concerned. It wouldn't take extremely long to start looking for original glass though other than the windshield. I have been looking for an original tinted windshield and haven't had any luck.
I have an 08C car and my original glass is dated XV IV and back glass is dated NV. (june, feb, and jan of 69) So you could look for original glass that just predates your build date. Since your car has glass you could replace each piece as you find the correctly dated pieces. OR you could just order all of it reproduction of coarse.
hope this helps

ANYONE OUT THERE WITH AN ORIGINAL TINTED WINDSHIELD FOR SALE OR TRADE?

Thanks. After closer inspection, I found that my other windows appear original PPG, all dated close to each other. *Driver door 26 19, Passenger Door 26 29, Passenger rear 27 29, Backlight 26 19) but the driver rear side window is the lone tinted LOF dated TV. It is my guess that the windshield was replaced in the early 70s, and the drivers rear side was replace by glass from a salvage yard at some point.

So now I think my best option is a repop windshield that is date coded to match, and later a new drivers rear side that is untinted and date matched.

I don't have one, but you say "green" tinted. Was there more than one kind of tint available?

Look under the heading; GM Marks (Tinted OEM glass of this era was green in color, whereas current Soft-Ray glass is blue). http://www.camaros.org/glass.shtml
Probably more info then you guys need but when you have time...fascinating read!

Definately a good read' but the photos section needs some ppg photos. I've tried to take some pictures but the lighting makes it very tough.

Ok, I understand , thought there was a change mid production from the way the request was worded. Thank you for the clarity!
I feel like I need to buy a whole project car or parts car just for the correct green tinted windshield, with the correct band at the top.

It just takes a little patience & about 100 pics per glass & one case of batteries  ;). Actually it isn’t that bad. Turn off all the lights (assuming your car is in a garage), use a drop cord light at the correct angle to illuminate the mark (inside/outside of car depending on the mark), take the pic opposite the side your light is on, w/o a flash. Sounds easy now but it truly was a major PITA!

I think we've all felt that way a time or two, or three, or... about most thing First Gen... ;)

Besides being easier on your eyes, tinted glass has another advantage over clear..    it provides great protection for the interior materials from the sun's uv rays...  interiors in tinted glass cars are always much better than clear glass cars (at least down here in the south)...

What area do you live in?   I can verify psautoglass.com I got a Dated Windshield there for my early '67 Coupe, it is right on.  Guys name is Mike Wimmer he is very knowledgeable on these date codes.  Located in Janesville, WI. just south of Madison.  I live right in the area, was able to save shipping.   My car also had all original glass, but windshield was  cracked.

I'm in the SC lowcountry. I read a few posts that mention psautoglass and actually gave them a call. Unfortunately, after shipping and installation, the cost was very high compared to a reputable installer I found locally, who can obtain good glass and have the correct date code added for me. The only problem is that I do not have a good example of the original markings for PPG untinted windshield glass. I'm really hoping someone here who has such can provide a photo for me. The supplier needs it to make sure the markings he does are accurate.

I never expected clear glass to be so much higher than tinted. If you asked me a week ago, I would have guesses tinted would be the one that was $100-$200 higher. Seems very little clear glass has been reproduced over the years.

Even if your side glass is clear, you should install the tinted windshield... (windshield only tint/shade) was an option from the factory..

That is very tempting. The tinted is much cheaper than clear.

Does anyone has an example/photo of 1969 PPG front glass markings? All I've been able to find is LOF.

lol. Thanks Skunk. It's not surprising that I am having trouble finding markings on glass from 43 years ago. Probably not many of those windshields around anymore, especially PPG. I'm hoping to find a Firebird owner somewhere with a good sample. PPG was standard on FBs, with some LOF, vs Camaros which were primarily LOF with some PPG.

LOS or NOR car?
Glass is glass, they would have mixed them on the production line. So your WS possibly/probably was LOF.

PPG just was the main supplier to Lordstorn. LOF supplied NOR.

Norwood car. The date correct glass in the car is PPG.

Thanks for the help anyway. Still looking for an example. Here's my backlight glass.

I believe it is the same for the windshield, except the "AS-2" rating would be "AS-1" instead. Not sure about the thickness code. (M20.6)

Kurt,

I have seen a couple of NORcars built late April, early May with PPG windshields. I believe the early May (I think 5A) JL8 I owned had a non tinted PPG windshield.

I'm not saying that it couldn't have a PPG WS. But, as Buddy notes on his car, they could and would mix incoming glass.
So a car could have mostly PPG and a LOF WS. Most glass that went to NOR was LOF, so the odds are......
